Rumor: QB Gunner Kiel delays decision because of Michigan
The Scout boards are blowing up right now about a rumor. Based on the paywall policies, I won't go into much detail. But the facts are this: Gunner Kiel was set to announce Sunday. This decision has been delayed. The rumor is that Michigan might have something to do with that. Conventional wisdom had been that after Gunner watched Shane throw at the OSU elite 11 camp, he cooled on Michigan, and was likely going to pick Oklahoma. But I guess, we're not done yet.
Still might be tough to land, but something to keep an eye on. If he visits, there's Hoke.
Stay tuned...
I hope so too, but I just really doubt it. Would make me sad because it's a shame to lose out on such a great local kid. I also feel like Morris just may be a better prospect in the end as well.
Morris explicitly said he knows they're going after another quarterback and he relishes the opportunity for competition. I'm under the impression that he doesn't care who we get because it will make him a better athlete and player. On my droid so I can't link but it was in his 'Hello' post.
Denard, Denard/Gardner, Gunnar/Gardner, Gunnar, Morris, Morris, Morris. I see no problem.
I really hope this is correct, but it's a really freaking long time until Morris' signing day. No matter what he says around the time we misses on our top QB target, by the time it comes to sign he could easily change his tune, and I wouldn't blame him. No matter how much he loves UM, a prospect like him has an eye on the NFL (as would anyone), and possibly only one year of starting soley will hurt him. I would love to get both, as it would be best for our team, but I just don't think it's unreasonable to think he would go somewhere else if we land Kiel and not a more middling QB.
Tell that to John David Booty. If you are good enough the scouts will see you. There are always guys they overlook but they wont just forget about you because you sat a few years behind a (hopefully) very successful NFL caliber player.
Oops dreaded repost. apparently double clicked on the droid. apologies all.

He started a few years at USC. He is high on the list for schoole records there. I think you are confusing him with Matt Cassel.
Yes. Thank you. 12 hour day at work brain fart...
Brad Johnson did not win the starting job at Florida State, yet he won the Super Bowl . . .
(back when FSU had that dynasty going, of course)
Also, look at Dayne Crist at ND. He was the #2 QB in his class and a 5 star and he was only one year behind Jimmah Clausen who was the #1 overall recruit. Jimmah didn't redshirt, then went pro after 3 years, and since Crist redshirted, he has 3 years of post-Clausen eligibility.
A very similar situation could happen with Kiel and Morris. I doubt Kiel redshirts, and if Morris does, he would have at least 2 years after Kiel leaves, maybe more if Kiel leaves early. Mark Sanchez only started for one year and he was the second QB taken in the NFL draft. I highly doubt this would affect Morris.
With Denard and DG definitely ahead of him and maybe Bellomy why wouldn't Kiel RS?
You may honestly feel that way but posts like these do nothing but stir up trouble. Morris is a Michigan fan and it would take a great deal to change his mind. This was discussed with the coaches and Morris seems to be fine with a 2012 QB. All of this has been discussed. Why do we insist on the "OMG, Morris is going to decommit just because UM recruits a QB not in his class?"
He went worked out against Gunner at 2 camps and took the MVP at one of them, and is a year younger to boot. How scared of Gunner Kiel do you really think he is? Why do you think Michigan mysteriously fell off the radar at that camp weekend to begin with?
life long michigan fan, we were his first major offer, goes to a bunch of the games every year, and has already started recruiting for this and his own class. plus he isnt taking visits. highly doubtful he decommits
Yes. He was told very clearly when he committed that the staff wanted to bring in another top tier 2011 quarterback. He doesn't plan on going anywhere.
This was a topic of discussion prior to his commit. Hoke informed him that we plan on taking a QB every year and see situation similar to Brady-Henson. I highly doubt a lifelong Michigan fan who committed this early would be scared by competition, especially after dominating the Elite 11.
EDIT: Maize and big beat me to the punch. Also, Shane Morris addresses the potential of Gunner committing to Michigan in the following article: http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2011/06/michigan_commit_shane_morris_c.html
Assuming everyone works out and no busts, from the players' perspectives, it seems that it wouldn't make sense for Michigan to have both Kiel and Morris come in back to back. With Gardner, Kiel, and Morris, at least one of them would get stuck only one year (eligibility-wise) behind the guy penciled in ahead of them on the depth chart.
If Kiel doesn't get redshirted, he has to beat out Gardner to have more than one year as the starter. If Kiel gets redshirted, Morris would have to beat out Kiel to get more than one year logged as the starter. These guys seem high profile enough to likely expect more than just one year as a starter.
Russell Bellomy is also in the competition, so it seems like things would be awfully crowded. I would love to have this problem, but i think it is unlikely that Michigan could land, and keep, both Kiel and Morris.
It's amazing how short-term some of these kids' memories seem to be. We just witnessed Cam Newton come off a dream year with a national championship, Heisman, and #1 NFL draft pick status, with his success based off just one season. If we keep getting solid recruiting classes and the coaching/scheme change works out, they could perform magic in their one season as a starter.
Exactly. It seems that the people most afraid of QB competition are MGoPosters. If you are good enough for the NFL, you will play at Michigan and scouts will find you.
I'd argue that that's not Michigan's problem. The best will play. I think all of those kids are secure enough in themselves and their skills to be believe that that'll be them. I know Morris has explicitly stated he's not afraid of competition. Big-name programs land talented athletes back-to-back all the time. Having quality competition only makes you better. Plus, as we saw last year, multiple QBs is never a bad idea.
This class is going nuclear.
Currently 19 officially avaliable
16 commits
2 more DT
Atleast 2 more OL
1 QB (its gunner or no one IMO)
1 WR
NO RB unless hes a real stud (Brionte,Marshall)
1 DB (praying its jarrod wilson)
1 DE (assuming chris woremly and we'd take two if washington picks us)
I'm saying we take between 22-24 this class...Dont be suprised if a couple players aren't asked to come back for 2012
take a few more if they enroll early? Of course there's the 85 cap, but that goes toward your comment about some players not coming back.
Strobel is enrolling early, if I recall correctly from his Hello post.
EDIT: I lied, it's Magnuson, and he has apparently only "mentioned enrolling early". But it'd be great if we could persuade him to do so.
I think this is spot on for the most part...
We have 18 available without attrition. Assuming T-Rob and Cox don't get 5th years that leaves us at 20, plus normal attrition (3-4) gives us 23 or 24.
1 QB (Kiel plz)
1 WR (Stanford or Burbridge)
2 OL (Diamond and 1 of the Wash kids either Garnett or Banner)
2 DT (Pipkins and 1 of Day, Shittu, Jones, or Jaleel Johnson)
1 DE (Wormley or Washington)
1 S (Shumate or Wilson)
That puts us at 24. If Kiel goes elsewhere we try to grab Dunn or Marshall or Greg Garmon and skip a QB this time around.
it is 18 thx for the clarification...scouts offically reported 19 a couple of days ago but i think they made a mistake. Shaping up to be an awesome class!
i think cox and the rb position is the wild card for us getting the max amount of open spots. if cox plays his way into the starting spot and keeps it for the year then he will obviously get a 5th year.
from the prior regimes recruiting efforts will most certainly not be asked back. Why occupy spots with replacement level players suited for a different system when you are amidst building potentially the best top to bottom class in the history of the school?
Worst. Post. Ever.
He could mean by not asking back some potential 5th year players.
People were objecting to his assertion that those Redshirt Juniors were "bottom feeders," both because (a) it is ridiculously derogatory and insulting to kids we have no reason to believe are anything but stand-up, (b) those 'bottom feeders' include some damn fine football players (Patrick Omameh? Roy Roundtree?), and (c) [see signature line below]
i.e. players that don't contribute anything whatsoever to the football team in terms of on the field production. This isn't peewee football, if you don't contribute, you should step aside for someone who does.
Nick Saban approves of this statement. Bobby Petrino co-signs. Houston Nutt also in favour.
Nick Saban? Is that you?
Because RJS threatened to kill him......on the football field.
RJS does seem to like to say "Go Blue or Die"
He is going to Indiana.
OT from Gunner but still. I didn't see this anywhere, but Ondre Pipken's just tweeted his top five:
Wow. Had to clickt hrough to verify. More good news coming tomorrow?
Hilariously random Top 5. Especially SVSU.
The inclusion of "Go Blue" is fantastic, though. I'd love to get this kid.
But none of those schools' colors are blue...
hmmmmmmm....
"SVSU's official colors, red and blue, provide a distinguished richness and vibrant energy to the image of SVSU. The SVSU logo should always be shown in these hues of red and/or blue (the logo may also appear in black or white). These colors should be applied with the proper mix of colors to produce accurate representations of each color. "
wont be reading into that Go Blue tag have seen that and have been lead to failure before.
I hope he keeps 4 of those schools in his top 5
Does anyone know when he's going to announce then?
