Rumor: Gardner to wear Ol 98

Submitted by Geaux_Blue on
It was brought up in the Gameday thread but I've now heard it from 3 people who are unconnected that Gardner will debut Harmon's number tonight. As one of these folks is in the media and another has tapped injuries and suspensions consistently, I think it's fair to say its happening. The only apprehension behind it is a) it feels rushed and b) may be a test of the waters.

Commence purely opinion based arguments on history and This Is Michigan and Hoke does/does not get it.

This I do not care about.  Once you make the decision to unretire numbers to honor them in this way (which I think is relatively cool!), give it to someone really just establishing himself as a star (hopefully!).  It's just when you change a senior's jersey who has already established himself as a semi-legend that I get annoyed.  :cough: Kovacs.

I think the whole reassigning numbers in the name of Marketing business is awful ghey...

That I said, I can't deny it would be kind of cool to see DG pull off a huge game wearing Ol' 98

The main problem I have with legends jerseys is not that it is a novel idea or a potential honor for the players but what happens when a player wants to stick with his number? We have at least four of these jerseys now? You keep swapping numbers to legends long enough and eventually you will have a player that wants to turn it down.

We all can thank Braylon Edwards and the saga centered around the #1 jersey for giving the athletic department the idea for the legends jerseys.

One final point, the legends jersey is a gimmick to push Michigan jersey sales. Few people will buy a jersey that has Tom Harmon with the #98. Millions will buy a Devon Garner jersey with #98 on the back and lets charge a little bit more because its a "legends jersey."

Thanks for being a douche.

Yes, I could see this jersey selling with a modern Michigan players name on it.

I know a lot of the mgoblog posters would buy a Harmon jersey with Harmon's name on it but we are a small percentage of the total fanbase.

I see two post critiquing my spelling Devon Gardner and my hyperbole regarding the sale of jersies but ignoring the main points.

YYAAAAYYY!!! I am really excited to see him run out of the tunnel wearing 98. I only see this is a definite positive. (Including added Heisman attention) Just wanted to add that I've been saying it would be him in about every thread about the topic.

...had Harmon #16 on their list of greatest college football players ever, just behind John Elway and just ahead of Bronko Nagurski, Jim Brown and Dick Butkus. Those are names that people know.

I don't live in Ann Arbor and I honestly don't know a single college football fan that doesn't know who Tom Harmon was. Maybe my friends and I are just old....

I said attention not hype. It wont make him have better numbers but itll add to the media attention about the number, thus DG. And media attention is half the battle . Everyone is going to remember the QB that wears 98 even if they don't remember his name. Nomsayin'? I can see the College GameDay special about it now ... especially in a big win tonight.

if we are doing #98 (we are) then there is no other player Id rather see wearing it than Devin. He is electric, charasmstic, a team playker, leader, and a Michigan Man. AND it would be FUCKING AWESOME to see a QB with that #. The only one in the country for sure.
