In a general roundup of things most of us already know in the Detroit News under Angelique's byline, Rodriguez said he has "a couple" spots open and thinks recruiting is in "pretty good" shape. My question: is the 26 number what the consensus of the blog has been lately? I may have not paid enough attention, but I kept seeing 28 as the number around these parts. So it sounds like there is a spot open for Parker or Knight should one committ, and if reports early are true about Jake Ryan committing, then the class is done. Parker or Knight, but the point is only one guy left it seems.
RR says he can sign 26 guys per Angelique-1 spot left?
I remember everyone was pretty excited about Jibreel Black and Todd Chandler a couple weeks back. Where are they know, and is RichRod still going after Baxter heavily?
Baxter is down to Florida, Oregon, and USC.
Chandler is most likely going to Louisville with Torrian.
I know he said he would take visits to Florida, and Oregon, but that doesn't mean we are out
Here is a link to one story: http://mbighouse.blogspot.com/2010/01/michigan-thursday-quick-recruiting...
The consensus for a while was 29, but Sam Webb has been saying for a while that we can only sign 26. My question is why? The rules seem to allow for more. Also, if we don't end up with room for either Sean Parker or Rashad Knight, some of the decisions made by the staff earlier in the process will be considerably more frustrating.
I'm working off the top of my head here, but it's possible that the staff has given some scholarships to walk-ons on a one year basis. (Que debate on what's better - rewarding a kid who worked hard or signing another 3* slot receiver)
Secondly, it could just be the staff's preference to keep additional spots open for next year's class. Next year's class will necessarily be a small one, but RichRod might want to keep a few extra spots open for the 2011 recruits, just for the sake of balance. Not sure how much sense that explanation makes - a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush?
Or maybe we just didn't interpret the rules correctly?
I think you are right on here. I'm pretty sure that we can go to 29 (25 for this class and four for the last), but that would seriously limit our next class.
I assume that RichRod had been saying 25 to everyone for a while to create demand for the remaining spots. Now he's saying 26 for the same reason. If we could somehow land Baxter and Parker, and then Seantrel Henderson called, we would make room for him without having to exclude anyone else, but the preference is to save a couple for next season.
Not sure how much sense that explanation makes - a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush?
That would actually contradict what you're saying, fwiw. Not sayin, just sayin.
Before the OSU game, RR said they'd sign 25 guys. Now it's at 26 apparently. We'll see.
Remember that Tony Drake is listed in our 25 on Rivals, and he'll likely not be apart of the class come signing day.
"We have one more spot open that could or could not be filled," Rodriguez said, adding that he expected to know sooner rather than later.
This could mean including Drake, or it could mean excluding Drake and there's a silent commit.
That was actually referring to an EE, which he couldn't say who at that time but we now know is DG.
You're right I misread it. He actually says we, "only have a couple spots open" further down the page.
Yep, WolvinLA2 is correct. Take out Drake and we're at 24. We'll take Ryan and Parker and most likely be done barring any late surprises.
We just had Knight on campus and he was wowed by it. I think he's just as likely.
and I personally don't think Parker is. He took a official visit to USC this past weekend. I don't think that is going to work well in our favor
Someone on Scout said Kinard might not get in. Anyone here know if there's any truth to that?
There've been rumblings that he might not qualify, but that doesn't affect the numbers here. Rodriguez said he can sign 26 and whether Kinard qualifies or not he'll still count to that.
They don't even bother signing him once they find out his academic results? Isn't that what we assume is happening with Drake?
Well Drake hadn't even taken the ACT yet last I heard. Most guys who are borderline types don't find out if they're eligible till they get their final grades back in June.
Kinnard plays a position of need (LB), but he's an academic question mark. I wonder what RichRod thinks is worse: losing a LB recruit, or signing a recruiting and then losing him to ineligibility.
Depending on the risk of him being ineligible (and I have no idea how to quantify that risk) I'd say RichRod replaces him with a different LB (Jake Ryan?).
RR could decide that if it looks unlikely that Kinard qualifies, he doesn't get a LOI to sign. This is not uncommon, nor is it unethical, IMO. A lot of these kids are told that if there shit isn't together by signing day, and there are qualified recruits who want that spot, that the unqualified kid can get bumped.
If that's the case, I agree with it. I want Antonio Kinard in this class, but there's no sense in signing Kinard who might not be able to come anywhay and pass up on another solid player who has already been cleared.
Kinard seems to think he'll be in Ann Arbor. Never mentions academic issues. http://www.annarbor.com/sports/um-football/michigan-linebacker-recruit-a...
From annarbor.com (http://www.annarbor.com/sports/um-football/michigan-linebacker-recruit-a...):
Kinard committed to Michigan at the Wolverines’ junior recruiting day last spring, and never seriously entertained offers from Penn State, Illinois, Michigan State and others.
“Michigan State was on it to the fullest,” Kinard said. “They would not give up. They would call me on my cell phone and be like, ‘Hey, are you going to come down here to visit? It’s only like a half-hour more away, 50-something miles away from Michigan.’ And it was just like, ‘Give it up. I’m not going to y’all’s school.’
“They would keep nagging. They would send letters to the school, to my house. It would get nuts to the point where I was like, ‘Please, just give up. I’m a Wolverine.’”
He has a great attitude and sounds like he is willing to work his ass off for this team.
I hope Kinard is good to go, and that we pull in Jake Ryan. Throw these two guys in with Josh Furman, Rogers, and Hawthorn, and I think we've got a pretty dynamic LB class for the next 4 years
Are they still going to try and get Rashad Knight?
does RR's 26 include the transfers which seemed to be coming up? If they aren't finalized he may not be including them in his 26.
Cissoko and Brandon Smith
It's 25, as Drake's not going to cut it. It might even be 24, as Kinard might not cut it either (notice that we have 5 DE/Q's committed right now...).
It seems as though the last scholarship (#26) will go to either Sean Parker or Rashad Knight. Then if another opens up, there are several positions we are still hitting hard, and a couple of prospects that we might be able to make room for:
#1) OL: Nichols. He's listed on rivals big board right now. Big high school TE. Might be worth a schollie!?
#2) NT: Beachum/Thornton. Haven't heard from Beachum in a long time. It sure would be nice to land a legit NT.
#3) ILB: Dorsey/Thomas/Mehrer *If Jake Ryan is being recruited as an ILB...then he beat out these three for the ILB schollie.
#4) Studs: Baxter-SB, Black-DE *EDIT - sounds like we're just not that into grimes.
QB: Gardner, Jones (?)
WR: Miller, Robinson
WR: Jackson, Williamson
DT: Ash, Talbott
DE: Wilkins, Paskorz
Q: Kinard, Rogers
FS: Robinson, Johnson
SS: *Parker/Knight, Vinopal
CB: Christian, Talbott
