RR PSU Personnel Updates on Coaches Show
While I'm getting a kick out of what's going on in the Chris L. Rucker thread, for anyone wanting to actually talk about some Michigan Football, Angelique Chengelis tweeted a few personnel updates that RichRod talked about on his Coaches Show tonight (all found here: https://twitter.com/#!/chengelis):
-Cam Gordon listed at both safety spots now
-Ray Vinopal listed at free safety (not sure if this means he will be starting or not but sounds like he may see the field)
-Marvin Robinson moved to LB
-Quinton Washington & Will Campbell moves look like they "will stick for now"
-Teric Jones has "progressed expect to see him play at Penn State"
-Stephen Hopkins: "Trying to get the big guy, Stephen Hopkins, some more reps. He's going to play more"
-They've also "moved defensive linemen around a bit"...not totally sure what that means, there's no elaboration.
I am most surprised to hear Teric Jones will be seeing the field. Didn't think he would play more than the BGSU game because he had so far to go apparently. Whose carries will he be taking? That should be interesting. Any other thoughts?

Hmm. He's fast - wonder if this is a substitute for Fitz?
October 28th, 2010 at 9:19 PM ^
Maybe it's a prediction that we'll be emptying the bench in the fourth quarter.
October 28th, 2010 at 8:50 PM ^
Which one? Are we assuming WLB? Or does this LB qualification apply to spur in this case?
October 28th, 2010 at 8:53 PM ^
Maybe spur? Do the coaches count that as an LB spot?
October 28th, 2010 at 9:41 PM ^
I believe that's considered a safety spot. If you look at the coaching assignments
Braithwaite coaches safeties and coaches the Spur and Bandit spot
Robinson has the LB's which are the 3 LB positions. So based on that it sounds like Marvin is at WLB behind Mouton.
October 28th, 2010 at 8:55 PM ^
I've been saying for a while that Marvin Robinson (once a very highly-rated recruit if I'm not mistaken, can't recall why he fell unless somebody can track down Hello: Marvin Robinson) was born to play the Spur position in GERG'S scheme.
He's fast, good-sized, and I'm guessing a solid tackler.
October 28th, 2010 at 8:59 PM ^
Marvin Robinson (once a very highly-rated recruit if I'm not mistaken, can't recall why he fell
Two reasons: Got injured senior year and was considered too much of a "tweener"
October 28th, 2010 at 9:05 PM ^
Well that sounds promising then.
Isn't the Spur position essentially made to be a hybrid LB/S position?
Any idea what the injury was?
October 28th, 2010 at 9:33 PM ^
Pulled groin, nothing seemingly that serious. The book on him seems to be too small for linebacker, too poor coverage skills for DB. We'll see how spur shakes out, I guess.
October 28th, 2010 at 9:44 PM ^
You stated:
once a very highly-rated recruit if I'm not mistaken
Once?...the guy is a god damned freshman. Jeebus. Give him one season to prove himself?
October 28th, 2010 at 9:46 PM ^
I don't think he's condemning his production, but MRob was once thought to be top-10 material, only to barely hang into the 100/250. He slipped as the rankings progressed, I think that's what he means. Could be wrong, though.
October 28th, 2010 at 9:44 PM ^
I think it was a lot of hype for his Soph and Jr. years of high school where he was much further developed than most other kids. They caught up during his Sr. year and with the injury ended a borderline 4* iirc.
October 28th, 2010 at 8:52 PM ^
Stephen Hopkins: "Trying to get the big guy, Stephen Hopkins, some more reps. He's going to play more" Amen.
Hopkins versus pile = Hopkins win.
October 28th, 2010 at 8:52 PM ^
MRob to LB is exciting, although there's probably less chance to see the field there. Who backs up Kovacs then?
October 28th, 2010 at 8:55 PM ^
Brandin Hawthorne? Just a guess. I have no idea what position he's at to be honest.
October 28th, 2010 at 9:36 PM ^
I think Brian said that he is backup to Carvin and T. Gordon at the Spur position.
October 28th, 2010 at 9:38 PM ^
...It seems. I'd guess that of all the guys we have that haven't been mentioned to specific positions here, he seems to have the best skillset for Bandit. The coaches must have some confidence in his coverage ability, he saw spot time at deep safety this offseason. He's a pretty vicious hitter too.
October 28th, 2010 at 10:16 PM ^
I think Brian said that he is backup to Carvin and T. Gordon at the Spur position.
You know depth's an issue when bloggers are being pressed into service.
October 28th, 2010 at 9:00 PM ^
I disagree. I think Kovacs is one of the most solid players we have, and should have the bandit locked down for the next two and a half years.
October 28th, 2010 at 9:17 PM ^
I only meant this season. I think Kovacs is easier to pass than Mouton.
October 28th, 2010 at 8:52 PM ^
Interesting to see Marvin Robinson moved to LB. I remember a lot of speculation about him moving there during his recruitment.
October 28th, 2010 at 8:55 PM ^
Yeah, Rivals actually had him rated as an outside linebacker, not a safety.
October 28th, 2010 at 8:56 PM ^
This is interesting. I wonder if Sagesse will be moving to back up Martin or there will be some shifts where Banks plays? Why would Marvin move to linebacker now? It seems like we need him to back up Kovacs in case he gets hurt.
It would be really great to get a huge lead on PSU; besides just just beating them it would be cool to see some of these personnel moves come to fruition.
Edit: I must type with a toothpick because as I typed about 20 people said the same stuff I was thinking.
October 28th, 2010 at 8:54 PM ^
My guess is that MRob moving to LB means he's taking Roh's OLB spot, so Roh can move back to DE, which means we see less of Banks/Sagesse. Just speculation on my part, but the tweet mentions Dlinemen moves, which would all make sense.
October 28th, 2010 at 8:58 PM ^
This seems to be most logical to me given the line reshuffling. Always hard to decipher from tweets when there's not much room for specificity, but if I'm putting the pieces together this sounds about right.
October 29th, 2010 at 12:24 AM ^
I don't know about anyone else, but i like the sound of this.
October 28th, 2010 at 8:55 PM ^
I'm going to put the optimistic spin on the Jones news and take it to mean that the coaches are really confident.
October 28th, 2010 at 8:57 PM ^
That should suit them better long-term. If we can get a true, center-field type free safety - hopefully it's Ray Vinopal - it sure looks like we'll have the depth at the 8 positions closer the LOS to field a respectable defense.
October 28th, 2010 at 8:57 PM ^
I thought M-Rob would an All-American safety. He's my favorite player from that class.
Now, he'll just have to be an All-American LB!
October 28th, 2010 at 9:00 PM ^
MRob to LB? Lets hope these defensive moves work. Please Lord.

October 28th, 2010 at 9:31 PM ^
I'm with you on this wholeheartedly. I am hoping against hope that we aren't just rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic.
October 28th, 2010 at 9:01 PM ^
Teric Jones has "progressed expect to see him play at Penn State"
Yeah I'll be sure to keep an eye out for him.
October 28th, 2010 at 9:03 PM ^
I know it may sound crazy but I would love nothing more than Stephen Hopkins getting 20 carries a game this year.
October 28th, 2010 at 9:12 PM ^
Is it 8:00 saturday yet?

DAMNIT...
October 28th, 2010 at 9:14 PM ^
Angel has some of that info wrong...
Marvin Robinson has been playing some LB ..he will play some at safety now
Cam Gordon will now play some at LB and some at safety..
Teric Jones will see the field at tailback against PSU
Carvin Johnson is being moved to safety,,
Will Campbell has a bright future at guard..but hes not ready yet
October 28th, 2010 at 9:19 PM ^
But now I don't know WHAT to think, other than...
Cam moving ==> Vinopal starting at FS, Cam at Spur?
Teric playing ==> Shaw still not 100%? Looking for depth?
Will Campbell ==> The Otter replacing Schilling next year?
October 28th, 2010 at 9:36 PM ^
But I think all of these moves seem like good things to me
Carvin -----> FS
Cam ------->he said LB (is spur considered a LB?)
Teric ------->Tailback, he said Jones has progressed very quickly..could just be Shaw is still hurt
I think people are giving Will Campbell to much flack for the fg that got blocked. Blocking on xp's and fg's is completely different then on a normal offensive play. On special teams they have to kinda just stand there and wait to get run into as compared to being able to attack a defender like they normally would. If big Will is strong enough, I think he will be an excellent gaurd. Call me crazy but I see a young Larry Allen when i look at the guy.
October 28th, 2010 at 9:27 PM ^
Interesting, I also don't know what to think now. Like I said, it's always hard to know what the story is with tweets because they aren't actually articles that can be edited for accuracy and clarity. I just thought this was a good way to get some talk going about our team and thought it was worthwhile to share.
October 28th, 2010 at 9:19 PM ^
October 28th, 2010 at 10:25 PM ^
Purely speculating, but I would bet this happens fairly regularly. I think normally this stuff would happen behind the scenes, in practice, when most of these guys would be redshirting in a normal situation and we wouldn't hear much about it.
October 28th, 2010 at 9:25 PM ^
HOPKINS MOAR CARRIES! MOOOOOOOOSE RAAAAAAAAAGE!
I love that kid. He's got the potential to be an absolute beast. And that's saying something, because he's already a partial beast.
October 28th, 2010 at 10:50 PM ^
LIke this?
October 28th, 2010 at 9:26 PM ^
was T gordon and carvin playing that bad to be replaced? I know our D is bad but they seemed to be doing decent. If its an upgrade I'm all for it Though.
October 28th, 2010 at 9:35 PM ^
They've been solid, but not Stevie-Brownesque. It's not so much that they're not playing well, just that the coaches think they have other guys better suited for the position, it seems.
October 28th, 2010 at 9:31 PM ^
Good news everyone! I think I may have figured out what's been wrong with the defensive.
Cam Gordon listed at both safety spots now
Now I'm no defensive expert or anything, but is it really smart to make one guy play two positions simultaneously?
October 28th, 2010 at 9:33 PM ^
No, Charlie Sheen. No it's not.
October 28th, 2010 at 9:37 PM ^
Didn't think so. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go get my wallet back from that hooker.
October 28th, 2010 at 10:07 PM ^
That is Roger Dorn's wife you're talking about!
October 28th, 2010 at 9:37 PM ^
Just throwing out a what if here...
What if they are planning to move Roh to DL, for Banks. Then Marvin Robinson plays the Deathbacker position. Then you could give Mouton More free range to blitz the QB and let Mrob flow and make tackles and defend the pass.
October 28th, 2010 at 9:41 PM ^
The "deathbacker" is more of a DE/LB. In no way should a safety be coming down to play as a part time DE. Banks is a DT, somewhere around 285 I believe? Roh is not. That would sacrifice a lot in the run game, me thinks.
