RR Post Game Presser

Tim's presser review has an interesting note: "The quarterbacks need to be smart about taking unnecessary hits. They're running a little more than Rodriguez might like, and he'd prefer to see 5-6 rushes a game"

Didn't Denard have about 5-6 called run plays? That would mean he's not supposed to run at all on any option plays. I'm wondering if this is gamesmanship on the part of RR to keep defenses focused in on the RBs, leaving the offense to take advantage of this....thoughts?

What Rodriguez prefers

and what actually gets called because of formations are two different things. Hindsight and all that.

I'm pretty sure opposing defenses have plenty to worry about between Minor, Brown, Shaw, the QBs, the slots, the wides and the Koger threat.

Agreed

I haven't seen too much gamesmanship from RR to date. He usually says what he means, but that doesn't necessarily translate to what happens during the game.

Isn't that the point of the spread option?

The coaches make a base "call," but the QB reads the defense from that point to the snap, and then to handoff, throw or run.

To a great extent, yeah. I

To a great extent, yeah. I think what Rodriguez means is, he would prefer that on plays not designed to be QB runs, the QB's look for receivers a little more often than tucking it in and running it.

I think that comment is

I think that comment is especially true this year for RR because our lack of depth at QB. He wants those guys to get hit as little as possible. Not saying he wouldn't want that in future years, just this year especially.

I think he meant more like

I think he meant more like 5-6 rushes that end with them taking a hit, and it particularly applies to Tate.

Good Example

A good example would be that run last week where Tate was headed out of bounds but for whatever reason decided to hold up and chip the defender. DUMB! Just don't do it. I am all for guys getting the extra yard and nothing bugs me more than when a RB or WR runs out of bounds to avoid a hit, but if your name rhymes with Porcier get the F out of bounds!
