RR played defense...
I find it interesting that RR played defensive back given his status as an innovator on offense. We have all discussed at length that he doesn't spend much time with the defense, and personally I am fine with that. If Casteel were available I would want him, if only for the reason that I know RR would trust Casteel enough to NOT dabble in the defense.
My interest is that RR; is not a defensive coach, doesn't claim to be a defensive coach, and would assume to be in a position where he doesn't need to spend anytime with the defense...yet played defense in college.
For those that know more than I do, are there any other names that jump out to you as coaches / coordinators who specialize on one side of the ball, yet whose playing career took place on the other?

Lloyd was a QB at Missouri and Northern Michigan, but a D-Coord at Michigan.

You don't need to have played defense to know this. The question is what is he going to do about it?

RR playing on defense my be why he understands how to run an offense that shreds defenses. He understands how to expliot the weaknesses in defenses but not how to remedy them.

My guess is coach Rod knows how to remedy the defense. The remedy is simply time as he has said but the question is will Dave Brandon have the patience it takes for RR to get his talent in place. The defense is way behind the offense in terms of talent and that is something Dave Brandon can evaluate as we gain new recruits and he sees all of the freshman waiting on the depth chart such as Furman, Ash, Ryan, Robinson, Wilkins etc..

That is an idiotic comment. The defense is all very young (save Obi, jonas, and James rogers.) The problem is purely inexperience and that will come in time

He's got Calvin MacGee to handle the offense, and RR is obviously not happy with the way Gerg is doing things, judging by how he's barging into defensive huddles on the sidelines to give them a piece of his mind. At least we wouldn't have to worry about the position coaches subverting RR or going behind his back.
Sure, I know it's stupid, but no more so than hiring Robinson in the first place.

when Rich jumped in the players faces. I watched it in slow motion to see if I could figure out what he was yelling. In the process, I noticed in the background that GERG, took off his headset and stroked his grey hair about 3 or 4 times........ GERG: Are defense sucks, but damn my hair looks terrific....

I don't really have any examples without looking it up, but I'll venture to say it's much more common than you think. What better way to know how to take advantage of the other side of the ball then to actually have played on that side of the ball.

While I could be wrong, I think in the early 90's, Moeller inserted himself in the defense one year. He claimed the toughest 11 would start.

Moeller was our D coordinator for 9 years total (2 different stincts) before he moved to offense in 1987.

needs to do whatever he feels will get the best play out of the defensive players we have right now, with or without regard to Gerg or anyone else at this point. He has not shown great decision making in regards to his last two hires, but who cares at this point? Get something going now, get crazy if you need to.
