RR & LC / personal communication?

Submitted by TorontoBlue on
I heard RR quoted on Saturday saying "thats a tradition I wasn't aware of" talking about going shirtless in the locker room after a win. That's not the first time I've heard RR say those words (#1 jersey issue, etc etc). Got me wondering if anyone has actually sat RR down and gone thru these types of things with RR? You would think LC would have taken that on as one of his personal responsibilities - to ease RR into the job and helped him with these issues to keep the traditions alive. Does anyone know if they have any kind of a formal/informal line of communication between each other?

As far as I know, the only line of communication open between LC and RR is an informal one thru Rosenburg and Snyder.

I know LC is a smug kind of guy but I have been pretty disappointed in him over the last year and a half. Even if he doesn't like RR I would think he cared for the program enough to show some support.

I think he's just hesitant to take any of the attention from Coach Rod. It's his program now and precisely because of LC's long history with M it wouldn't be right of him to be making too many public appearances in connection with the program. I dont think this is just a case of him being smug or snubbing Coach Rod.

i believe lloyd still has an office, so imagine they see each other. tough to say whether lloyd should volunteer things or RR should ask, but if one man really wanted to talk at length i doubt it wouldn't be a problem. if i'm wrong, i'm sure someone on this board will correct me.

I've been following the team pretty damn closely for many, many years and I'd never once heard or read of the shirtless "tradition" until just a couple of days ago.

I am just trusting that Lloyd is just staying out of the way. I hope that is the case because that is what he should do. I do wish he would at least make a statement that he supports RR though. Then stay out of the way.

I didn't know about the shirtless tradition either. And I'm a little confused about it. Does it apply to any win? If so, why wouldn't RichRod know about it by now? Obviously there wasn't much to celebrate last year, but they did win three times.

Lloyd said he'll do whatever it takes to help out this program. He and RR talk on the golf course and have said on numerous occasions that they have a good line of communication. LC didn't freak out over these allegations...he sees the big picture on things. Combine that with the fact that he hates most of the media and you have a plausible answer as to why LC stayed silent on the issue. I think LC figured this would pass without his help. He knows winning cures all.

Yes, I have never heard of this shirtless tradition. FTR, it supposedly only happens after "big" wins, whatever that means. In my opinion, every win is a big win. I can't picture a bunch of college kids tugging on old man Lloyd Carr's shirt trying to rip it off. Carr is a big dude and he's still in pretty good shape for his age, but if I'm 21 years old, I'm not trying to a) see him half-naked or b) break his hip.

Also, if Lloyd wanted nothing to do with the program, he probably wouldn't still have an office there. I find it hard to believe that an ex-football coach would still work for the program but completely separate himself from the current football coach.

I know the guy, he is 100% a Michigan Man through and through and wants to see Coach Rod be successful. But he doesn't want to step on his toes in any way. If Rich calls him, his door is always open. BTW, Lloyd's office is not down the hall in the Schembechler bldg, he is up the street. He is enjoying his retirement, so let him do so, he has earned it. He is behind Coach Rod, and he was not a fan of Les Miles coming to Michigan, i will leave it at that as there is a bit of history there...he loves Coach Rod's ingenuity and passion and expects he will do very, very well here once the old guard gets accustomed to him and he is able to win his way with his philosophies. I think he has played this well and is letting RR pave his own way, his new traditions that will go down in M lore as the next generation of excellence at Meeechigan! On the shirtless tradition, there is no such tradition that exists as far as I know. Someone will have to ask Big Johnny if that's the case (John Falk, the equipment mgr who is the longest standing tenure in the bldg these days, he started when Bo hired him in 1968). But when i was in the locker room from 1982 thru 1986, this was never a tradition and it never happened and there were some big wins in those years. Maybe it evolved and its one now, but I think its a joke on Coach Rod and I love it. It would be a great new tradition. Hopefully some players or personnel from the 1990's and early 2000's could chime in on the topic.
