RPI v. Ken Pomeroy

Submitted by heckdchi on
Interesting to see that Michigan is only 122 in the rpi (http://www.realtimerpi.com/rpi_188_Men.html) but 62 in Ken Pomeroy's rankings (http://kenpom.com/team.php?team=Michigan). I know there's 2 months left and Michigan is only 10-8 (3-3) and looks like a fringe bubble team at best right now, but I'm curious to know if the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee considers any computer rankings outside of the rpi.

They don't, and they shouldn't take Kenpom into account. Kenpom rankings aren't based on wins and losses, they're an extrapolation of every possession that gives more credit for a blowout win than a narrow one. They're (very) useful as a measure of which teams are actually good but they aren't attempting to measure the quality of season.
