I don't mind. Unless it's to Alabama or USC. Wouldn't want them to get Sabaned or Kiffined....
Royce Jenkins-Stone and Terry Richardson visiting other schools
I know tressel would tell kids to use all of their trips to make sure if they wanted to be buckeye if thy ever felt on the fence. recruits would back up his notion as well especially if they were already committed to osu. typically in interviews they would state that tressel told hem to do this. not sure if hoke has the same mentality or not but just something I thought you might like to know. also, paid trips to Florida or USC can't sound too bad to a 17-18 year old kid.
He wanted the recruits to see how many more "perks" OSU had compared to those other places...
I know we offered this kid. But since I don't have enough points, I was hoping someone could make this a topic post on the board, on behalf of me. Thanks, sorry this has nothing to do with our Cass Tech boys.
Maybe they have relatives they want to go see .... Just my 2 cents... As long as they stay verbally & eventually sign the letter of intent come nsd, I'm all good with that.
Part of the perks of the recruiting process is the kid gets to take 5 free trips, for top rated recruits like these 2, that means anywhere they want to go. They had to deal with the annoying phone calls, let them enjoy a couple of free trips. I don't see much to worry about here. These two have been recruiting for us ever since the day they comitted.
It makes me a bit uncomfortable, but as long as nothing comes of it, then I don't mind. Also, if the coaches don't mind, then I guess it's their call.
I think with the GBOD. It would be hard for them to de-commit. Let them have some fun. If they find somewhere they like better, it would be hard to fault them for that.
Non issue, just kids wanting to see the country.
To be honest, it does make me a little uneasy, but you have to think about it from their point of view.
They're kids from Michigan who want to play together at Michigan, but why not get full paid trips to places like Florida, California, Texas, etc. I sure as hell would wanna go to nice campuses and be treated like a king.
Also, I don't think the guy tweeting "GBOD" will go anywhere but Michigan.
didn't RJS just tweet a few weeks ago that he's gonna visit other schools but don't worry about his commitment, he's still blue?
Just looking before the big day when you focus on the choice of your dreams.
then I guess it would be like going to your bachelor party and cheating on your fiance, and then you end up marrying the "stripper".
I think it would be kinda like if my wife won a trip on a cruise ship and only she could go. I trust her....and i'd understand her wanting to see other parts of the world BUT it sure would make me uncomfortable and more than a bit nervous while she was gone.
Edit: i posted that at virtually the same time you posted your almost identical anology.
Look, I don't want people coming here that don't want to be here.
I think RJS and TR are solid. Let them have their visits, their free vacations. They will be blue, I am not worried.
I would be much more concerned if they were taking unofficial visits. I see nothing wrong with taking free trips to anywhere in the country you want to go.
T-Rich was pretty upset by the responses of some Michigan fans when he suggested the visits.
Fault on both sides there IMO. People think they have some right to contact these kids and tell them what they think when it isn't at all warranted (as evidenced by some guys telling him off for wanting to take other visits).
But at the same time, what outcome was Terry expecting by tweeting that. It's just flamebait, especially when he came out later and said he's 100% to Michigan. Twitter's useful for a lot of things but I think these kids need to recognize that it's a public forum. He starts advertising he wants to take visits, and it's easy to get the wrong impression. Getting PO'd at the couple jerks who go off on him for it isn't productive either.
The creepy dude on here who thinks kids want to be his Facebook friend?
Hey, he's had a "meaningful impact" in landing some recruits for us....
On the nose. I ill never, never understand the sluggish thought process of people who reach out to these kids online. As far as I'm concerned, nothing ever good could come of it. And to slander them? Do you think that's helping the cause?
On the other hand, this is what we would consider 'foreseeable consequences.' While I think the reaction reflects poorly on us and is counterproductive, I don't think any fanbase would react any different. Of course, saying a 17 year old kid should know better is a bit off the mark
Anonymous UofM fans: shut up! All you can do is hurt our cause. Nobody knows you. Nobody cares about your opinions! We come on MGoBlog to talk to each other about Michigan football. Let's keep it here.
Sorry Terry. If we weren't all half-insane, we wouldn't be fans.
I'm sorry, but anyone that is over the age of 17 that tries to contact and communicate with these 17 year old HIGH SCHOOL kids is a loser. That's harsh but I can't see any other term that fits IME. Follow them if you must, but don't pretend that you are their actual friend and your comments mean anything. And especially, say nothing negative or GTFO.
I don't think Hawaii takes visitors unless they've already committed. It just costs too much to send every recruit in the country out there.
They are going to 7 on 7 camps/tournaments at Florida and Oregon. At least Terry is. They are guilty of poor wording, or trying to get a rise out of people at best.
a lot of positive news following the "Buckle Up" tweet.
one buckles up before rough rides as well as fast ones.
What's in your dresser drawers...
I don't think that they will leave. Though I'm wondering what exactly the rules are. Matt Godin wanted to be a silent commit but still make his last two visits to Wisconsin and another school. Hoke supposedly told him he would only accept his committment when he's done visiting other schools. So a few weeks later after the vists he committed. Like I said i still think they're blue but the rules should be the same for everyone.
EDIT: If they are just 7 on 7 tournaments and not official vists then nevermind.
"Terry_Rich: My trips to oregon and florida is the the opening and gridion king by espn not the schools @_maizeandblue since you all in my tweets buddy"
I do think it is a little stalkerish for UM fans to direct message recruits. That is going a little too far.
stop getting all up in our recruits tweets.
That's messed up...stalkerish fans just appearing on your twitter is uncool.
Especially the 2nd one from the left.
In some states.
i also think it is weird to tweet recruits, its their decision not some creepy 40 year old super fan's decision
I'm not for sure if it's the same person, but we have a "MaizeNBlue" on the mgoboards. I caught his name in another recent post.
Who wouldn't be nervous with 2 of their prized prospects visiting elsewhere. It happens year in and year out where a solid verbals de commit and sign elsewhere after falling in love on another visit. The visit that makes me really nervous is Oregon. Their AthleticTreatment Center is tops in the nation ... built and paid for by the founder of Nike. Here's a youtube post of the ridiculous treatment center ... it's an older youtube clip, so many people may have saw this, but this would definitely draw the attention of a new recruit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYbqtaHdJzY On top of that ... Dior Mathis is a Cass Tech recruit that signed with Oregon in the 2010 class, so I am sure he will be doing whatever he can to try to get him to strongly consider Oregon while he is there.
There is nothing we can do other than to show our support 100% for Mathis and Royce, and to continue to wow them on mgoblog with class and support. it's definitely not good to bash them as people on twitter obviously have done (see a few posts up). We are Michigan and we always treat people with respect, and never stoop to bashing. Unfortunately their are some fake Michigan fans on twitter that resort to bashing. That, or they are Sparty's and Buckeyes in disguise, trying to sabotage a program that is headed back in the right direction.
I am thinking this post on June 12th must have started the twitter bashing:
If I was in that position, I would definitely want to check out some "southern hospitality" from Auburn's "hostesses." I hope they have a great time wherever they go. Besides, it's legal for them to "recruit" their peers to Michigan while on visits.
Yeah I read something about this on another thread. T Rich kind of scares me when he makes certain comments. I think he said something along the lines of
"I thought michigan was my home and where all my support is i aint think yall would downplay me like that otherwise i couldve went elsewhere".
I really hope T Rich decided to go to Michigan because of the school and not the fans. If the fans are why he chose to go to Michigan then maybe he made a mistake. Hopefully someone can talk to him; he is an important member of this class.
Hey, people, if you're reading this, stop tweeting and Facebook messaging these recruits. Grow your asses up.
That being said, Terry Richardson was always expected to go out of state for school. I won't believe that he's Michigan's until he signs on NSD. I'm not saying he's a liar or anything, but I think the main reason he committed was because of Jenkins-Stone and Ross.
So this shouldn't be surprising, and stop being a dick to these kids. Did you not see what happened to Strobel, Kalis, Herbstreit, etc. and all those guys who went out of state for school, talked badly about OSU, etc.? We can't claim to be better than the bastards in Ohio if we act just like them.
Well said, Magnus. I second your sentiments.
I agree with you I wish people would just leave these recruits alone. These kids need time to grow up, I couldn’t imagine the things that would have came out of my mouth had I been put in front of a microphone like these kids. With that being said, I don’t think people will ever stop tweeting and Facebook messaging these recruits. I think we’re fighting a losing battle. People are just to pationate about their school. I think all we can do is hope these recurites chose Michigan for the school and not the fans.
Fighting a losing battle doesn't mean it shouldn't be fought.
If we try to get out the message that tweeting and facebooking recruits is a stupid, stupid, stupid idea, then maybe people will read it and get the message.
I agree with you 100%, this is something I stress as much as possible, I just think that the whole twitter and facebook thing has gotten so out of control. Just like the internet gives certain people a voice that should not have one; twitter and facebook does the same with certain fans. Theirs a small group of crazies whom twitter and facebook provides an avenue to voice their stupid opinions. I really don’t know what can be done about it, it’s a problem that O$U has had for years and haven’t been able to solve.
It's like the whole parable about the kid throwing starfish back in the ocean. "Made a difference to that one." As long as a few people are shamed into getting away from recruits twitters and acebooks then it's all worth it.
I have never understood why people can't leave these guys alone and why they can't seem to get that freaking out about kids decisions drives the guys away. Besides how in the hell do you begrudge a guy the chance to take a free trip?
One things for damn sure on the absurdly low chance that my son ever grows to become a D-I level recruit, I'm sitting him down and explaining that I am personally approving every facebook request and shurring down his twitter. I don't see how being this exposed to the ugly side of fandom is good for these guys in any way shape or form.
I agree with this X1000
Setting aside the possible impact on the recruiting class, getting on a 17-year-old kid's case about something like this is just stupid and immature.
It's also considered by the NCAA to be a secondary violation, so it's just a good idea to not interface with these kids. Follow them if you'd like, sure, but never never never tweet them.
I expected richardson to, but not stone. If they're going everywhere together there may not be much to worry about for you guys
It is not a fan's job to tell the recruits what to do and what not to do. Let the coaches handle it. People are freaking nuts.
I think you're nuts if you don't take your officials. Haven't you guys seen "He Got Game"?!
Seen it? It was a true story based on my life.
I tried to get someone better looking to play me, but it turns out no movie stars are as handsome.
I have just the guy to play you....
Though the guy in your avatar might qualify too....
If those two people had a baby, that might be an approximation of how awesome I am in real life.
Then again, I can see why....
In Norse Mythology, the Nine Mothers of Heimdallr are nine sisters who gave birth to the god Heimdallr.
Nine mom's? No wonder you're so cranky.
(Yeah, what's my excuse...)
Twitter is an awful thing when it comes to crap like this.
Mattison. If these boys don't want to be coached by The best d- coordinator in the land it's their loss not ours. We will have no trouble getting top notch talent year in and year out so I'm just not that worried about it. These guys are great players and all, but I'm sure there are others out there that are just as good but have that attitude of say, Magnuson... Those are the boys I want. There is a long way to go til NSD and things will change. if these guys leave, there will be no shortage of great talent that want to be developed by GM... I truly believe that.
Uh, a little arrogant this morning arent we? These guys are top 100 talent, they are somebodies, these guys leave we are not replacing them this year.
I'm not claiming there aren't dumbass Michigan fans out there that will harrass recruits like this, of course there are. But what is preventing MSU or OSU fans from doing it to make recruits think the fan base is crazy? On that point, what is preventing us from doing it to other schools' recruits?
I have too much faith in humanity to think that this goes on.
I would have thought the same thing about pooping in coolers but.......
They aren't taking visits. They're attending camps at Oregon and Florida in July. RJS was the first of the big three in-staters (RJS, TRich, Ross) to commit and has been recruiting others to UM. He's going nowhere. Neither is Richardson.
Also it should be noted that _maizeandblue no longer exists on twitter.
Either he was shamed into deleting his account or...
Is it possible that it's a non-Michigan fan posing as a michigan fan to annoy our recruits?
(cue dramatic music)
Ok. I need to stop being so paranoid.
It is probably some dumbass Sparty fan trying to piss of Richardson and make it look like Michigan fans are assholes. If it isn't them, I hope whoever has been doing this grows the hell up because they are not helping at all.
Maybe some of the people messaging the Cass Tech guys are Alabama fans.
I see what your saying, I agree I don’t beleive that Hoke will have a problem replacing any position if needed. However I tend to beleive that a 4 star instater has more value to this team then a 4 star recurite from out of state. I learned that from the RR error. We need T Rich to remain a member of this class.
I don't have a twitter but maybe when someone gets all up in their business (especially T-Rich) we should send in an army of mgobloggers telling them to stfu and stop creeping high school kids. It might stop them from being repeat offenders. Plus T-Rich might notice and feel better about the fanbase as a whole
I don't think the Michigan fanbase is that much better than Ohio's when it comes to this sort of anxiety and attention. I wish it were otherwise - but we have aggiatated recruits in the past verbally and with tweets. A verbal commit is what it is at this point. There is nothing holding these guys to anything.
Fan sites would do well to take down the twitter account info in their roster listings. I think the players and recruits for that matter - are savvy but clearly there are personal boundaries that the lowest common denominator cannot appreciate.
For what it's worth - many of these guys solicit followers on twitter. They will have to manage that with their own boundaries. They are coming to terms with fame - it's just manifesting in Twitter. In 10 years (if Twitter stll exists) this is probably not so much an issue - though HS kids will still be facing fame when they are good at football. Hopefully the Michigan fanbase will be less infamous.
Let those who are not CFB obsessed throw the first stones. Nobody on this board can do that.
And I shall smoketh them.
I understand the free trip to a nicer destination and I would also take that trip as many of you would as well, however my opinion is that once you commit your done visiting. All of that is fine and dandy before you commit.
You don't date a girl and then start banging chics on the side to feel it out, you do all the banging prior and then once your sold on one your committed.
They aren't taking official visits. They're attending camps on their own dime.
I tell my wife that I can look at the menu, I just can't order anything.
Look, I read this blog on a daily basis, for along time - rarely post. Leave the talking to Tom. Otherwise, back the hell off the kids. If youre guilty of this you should be ashamed. Recruits have an amazing opportunity... if you are a stand up person, you wish them the best no matter where they go. Pull it together people.
For anyone with ESPNU, they're showing the Brock Mealer story on E:60 right now.
does this mean they'll be downgraded to strong verbals?
We're talking about 17 and 18 year old boys who will be flown to destinations they might not otherwise have the opportunity to visit. They get treated like kings, shown some impressive college campuses, meet some other people, and probably eat some fantastic meals.
Let them enjoy the experience. Is there a chance they could be swayed by these other coaches? Sure. But I bet Hoke & Co are quite confident in the commitments they've secured from these guys and aren't worried about these visits (if they, in fact, are "visits" in the official sense.)
people need to lay off of these kids. if all you do is sit around and bash 18 year old kids because of their tweets or if they are taking visits then you need a new hobby. go buy a goldfish or something. we all want Terry to suit up in the Maize and Blue as he is a hell of a player, but it is his decision and i can't blame the guy for wanting to go check out some other schools.
I get the frustration with fans like the guy tweeting TRich, but the OP just asked a question. OP didn't follow him home to make sure he had his 'Go Blue' pajamas on before bed, he asked if there was any concern about players already committed going on visits. His concern is real- we have a great class but theres still 8 months until signing day. He wasn't reaming the kids for taking visits, just seeing if he should be concerned. Y'all need to take a step back and chill.
EDIT: A dissenting opinion is not flamebait, as much as you may want it to be.
Most of the hostility was directed to the twitter knobjockeys. The OP didn't even get negged.
I guess most people didn't specify who they were ripping, I just took it as directed at OP. My apologies if I was defending someone who was not being attacked, it just seemed like people were giving him a hard time for a legitimate question.
It's kind of unclear and could be read either way, but I think a lot of the hostility was directed towards that _MaizeandBlue twitter dude.
Of course we as fan would rather this not happen, but it does. It is important for fans to not overreact and bad mouth young men for...acting like young men. Fans have a hand in recruiting - and that is is to present a positive atmosphere where young men feel they are wanted and will be able to form a lasting partnership. What we say about impressionable teenagers matters, especially in this age of Twitter and Facebook. We have to be mindful of that. None of us wants to be the reason a young man decides to pass over our beloved Wolverines - mostly because some spiteful pinhead idiot takes a well aim shot at a recruit or potential recruit. We have to be better than that if we are going to help this coaching staff build Michigan into a perennial super power once again. We, as the loyal Michigan fan base, must always remember we are trying to win the hearts and minds of young people who might not love all that is Michigan just yet - like we do.
I don't have a problem with visiting other schools and having a good time. They're only recruits once, so they might as well enjoy the process.
I believe that I read that they are going for some Nike event, not visiting those schools. Also, people who attack these kids on twitter make Michigan fans look bad.
Is just dumb on every front. The Internet is anonymous. Who's to say that this person draping themself in the maize and blue isn't just trying to unsettle commits on behalf of some other agenda? Everyone needs to broaden their optics, including the recruits.
People will rationalize this, but no, it's not a good thing. They are leaving open the door, at least a crack, for other schools.
then there's no reason whatsoever to think twice about it. Are they supposed to sequester themselves within the borders of the state of Michigan until Fall 2012?
If they really are interested in other schools and end up deciding Michigan isn't where they want to be, so be it. It would suck to lose them, but anybody who thinks there won't be a single defection between now and Signing Day next February is a bit unrealistic. If Michigan survived the Rodriguez era, then it can survive the loss of a recruit. I know I will.
... at the MI High School All Star Game. I'm not sure what to think.
I guess we have to worry that he's joining the Marines.
Calm down, Dick. The picture is relevant to the thread.
Even if you look around UM's campus you'll see plenty of people wearing hats and shirts from other schools. Often times it's just because they like the colors. One of my buddies wore a Syracuse hat for all 4 years because he liked blue and orange.
Why is dick capitalized? His name's Don, not Richard...
Shouldn't it be "Bomb-Ass Dick"?
...is this from the (or a?) Braylon-Edwards-loudly-talking-dirty-in-West-Quad episode? wasn't aware it was general MGoKnowledge.
David Terrell? I think you have your Bomb Ass Dicks confused....
Which is why I made the comment I did. I.E., a recruit wearing another team's apparel doesn't mean anything by itself.
Seriously, is anyone else watching what is happening in Columbus - besides us, of course, cause I doubt we're the problem. But the entire "buckeye nation" is all but packing young Kalis' bags for him, sending him to Michigan with a chip on his shoulder... How is that smart? Seriously, do they think he doesn't read their garbage and comments? It doesn't do any good, even if you think you're just "venting" -- dude, no one cares! Now, of course, this here is my vent, though it's okay, cause I'm pointing out how much of an idiot those are who do this, so that makes it okay ... it does, I asked my mom, and tweeted my uncle dave 15 times until I pissed him off enough to where he agreed with me in exchange of my no longer asking.
I can't belive I have to say this - if someone thinks they might want to go to another school, they should go visit another school. If they end up liking it more than Michigan, they should go there.
If you're genuinely mad at anybody for taking other visits you need your brain examined and you need to start taking Michigan football way, way less seriously.
They are not visiting other schools; they are participating in ESPN's Gridiron Kings which is being filmed in Florida and Oregon; that is why they are going to thsoe two states in July.
Let them make it however they need to, and enjoy this process. They've decided to be Wolverines as of now, and deserve 100% support.
RJS and T-Rich are not taking Unofficial, or Official visits ANYWHERE. They are participating in ESPN's Grid Iron Kings which is being filmed in Oregon and Florida during the month of July. That is why they will be in those states on College Campus's in those states.
Real information is a precious commodity in these situations.
Sounds like there's nothing to be concerned about.
If you're just here to troll, then that's cool; we'll won't be seeing you here again after a week or so. If you're actually interested in being a part of this blog (like some other Spartan fans or OSU fans are) I would suggest making more of a contribution with your posts.
Rational MSU/OSU/ND fans are welcomed with open arms around here- try to emulate them if you want to stick around.
Have fun here the week you last. Try to at least be a funny troll, the stuff I've seen so far from you just doesn't measure up to some of the more clever ones we've seen.
I happen to be friends with justingoblue, and he's got bigger cojones than you and your Keystone Light-chugging weefs put together.
Given that your mascot/avatar wears a skirt, I wouldn't accuse anyone else of being a sally. Just sayin'.
You're gone already? Buh-bye!
I'd rather have these 2 sure that Michigan is the right place for them then have them transfer after arriving on campus. Plus they are the one that started the GBOD. I think it's safe to say they are going to stay blue.
Why deprive these kids of 4 great vacations/hostesses. Everyone here when they were in HS would have jumped at that.
