Roy Roundtree catch
Tree made a great catch in the Raycom Classic Senior All-Star Game yesterday.
The catch was featured in the SportsCenter top 10. Go Blue!

I was surprised to hear that Roy may be a very late pick, or not picked at all. The guy makes plays. Look at what Avant has done. I think that whomever gives him a shot will not be disappointed.

I agree. I love Roy Roundtree, but he's no Avant. Avant not only caught absolutely everything, but is a good chunk bigger than Roundtree with just as much speed (maybe more). In fact, Avant has everything NFL teams want in a receiver except elite speed, and Roundtree isn't elite in any category, and pretty average in a few.
Don't get me wrong, I'm pulling for him, but there's really no reason to compare him to Avant because he's well short of that bar.
EDIT: Avant was very underrated in college because he always had 2 of Braylon, Breaston and Manningham to compete with for targets, as well as Chris Perry or Mike Hart running the ball, so instead of being THE guy, he was one great option among a number of great options.

I think it is a pretty valid point that he was a very, very good possession receiver which is not going to get the hype of the burners running the fly routes.

I was at the game on that same sideline and when I first saw it, I thought it was overthrown and he caught it out of bounds. It wasn't until they showed the replay on the big screen that I realized what a catch it was. Good job, Roundtree!
I noticed during the game that a lot of the Big Ten players hung out together. James Vandenberg, Robert Marve, and Roy were all standing around chatting with each other throughout the game. I'm glad these seniors all got one more shot to go out there and have fun, many playing in their last game.

Really pulling for Tree to make a roster. Figures to be a bit of an uphill battle b/c his 40 time, but his hands, route running, blocking, and just about everything else are so solid one would think plenty of teams could use him. The number of drive-killing drops in the NFL is ridiculous for players at that level. Give me a reliable pair of hands anyday.
Also, Daffy Duck voice.

I wouldn't call Roundtree's hands reliable, he's made some great catches but also had way too many drops on routine throws. In that regard he reminds me of Braylon Edwards, only without size or speed.

I always compared Roundtree and Braylon because they seem to make a crazy and clutch catch that nobody else would make. However, they both seemed to drop easy passes way too often. I like the comparison between the two. However, the physical abilities are different, obviously. I sure hope that Roy gets a chance at the next level and has a nice career in the NFL. I'll miss watching him play for Michigan

I had slightly faster straight line speed than Roy, but my route running ability was atrocious, linemen could run them better than me... so playing at Michigan just wasn't meant to be...

elite heart and willingness to block
early production in slot dropped off as wr- at least partly system related
average hands and average speed at best
small frame

and is still with the Chiefs. If that's the bar, then that's probably the ceiling for Roy. Although I could see him as more of a possession-type, third-down guy for a team like the Pats or Packers.

I'd think he would work really well in their culture. Team player, willing to do whatever is asked of him by the coaches, pretty good at finding holes in the zone. Only issue I could see is the Patriot's have a ton of recieving options already between their RBs, WRs, TEs and I don't know if they realy want more players in that area. They seem pretty content with somewhat less coveted players mixed with taking on a couple of great players who have had attitude issues at other stops and forcing them to conform to their culture because they win.

Great catch by Roy. Hopefully he winds up on a roster and becomes one of those unheralded types who has a long and successful career.
