Roy Manning to Michigan as Outside LB coach?
Check out his twitter profile...
EDIT: Picture if you don't like clicking links, you savage:
If so, it's a great hire. Well done.
Wow! Great hire. Great find. Nice job digging that up.
Great hire.
I've heard in recent days that Michigan was probably going to hire someone from outside the "Michigan family" but I've been advocating for Manning since Montgomery left. I hope he's the choice.
That was all hogwash, anyway. Coaching trees (not that they matter a great deal) are really unclear for a long time. A bunch of his charges are now becoming defensive coordinators, offensive coordinators, and position coaches (Morrison, Wheatley, Hart, Hoke, Manning, Bedford, Loeffler, etc.), and several have coached in the NFL, too. We might not really see the extent of his "coaching tree" for another 10-15 years, because some of his players are still finishing out their playing days or working their way up through the coaching ranks.
Magnus, your statement stinks of bias. Look at how many Big Ten head coaches are from Tressel's tree:
Dantonio
Beckman
Hazell
Now, I loved Lloyd. However, the criticism you mention above is and was probably well-deserved.
Hoke, Stan Parrish, Mike Debord, and Ron English have been Lloyd assistants. Only one of them has really had success, (Though I'd say just being not completely sucky at Eastern is an accomplishment), but the only one who has proven anything there is Dantonio. The others might not be long for their current jobs either. (And Beckman was only on the staff for like 2 years). And Tressel was a head coach for 25 years (compared to 13). Not saying Tressel's tree is bad either. Sure you can say "Big Ten" but if you had done it one year ago it the list would have been "Dantonio." So a lot can change in a couple of years. Which was the point Magnus was making.
...and how do you know that Lloyd Carr assistants/players won't be head coaches in the next five or ten years? Or that the three coaches you mentioned will be the end of the Tressel coaching tree? You don't, which is the point of my post above.
***turrible pad level (I always hear Magnus speak is a Sir Charles voice, must be the BG avatar)
The truth is that I was offered, but I turned it down because I don't like the Adidas gear.
I remember you said this and I was hoping for this hire as well
Why do you feel that way? Not that I disagree at all, but what would make Manning a good hire, in your opinion?
He's a local guy, played at Michigan, coached/GAed at Michigan, played in the NFL, young, black, ties to the midwest, and played a very similar position to what he'll be coaching. I think it's important to have guys on the staff who played at Michigan or have previous experiences there, who know about the traditions and the rivalries and such.
You need a diverse coaching staff. You don't want a bunch of 60-year-old white guys. You also don't want a bunch of 30-year-old black guys. Different kids respond to different people, and it would be ideal to have someone who can connect to the kids that the other nine coaches might not be able to reach.
Exactly. Some kids are impressed by a young guy they can relate to. Some kids are impressed by a father figure. Some guys want a coach who is similar to their family, and some want a coach who is the furthest thing from it. Same goes for the parents, who have a lot of influence over the recruiting process.
Hoke uber alles
Really? We use a Nazi slogan here, really?
They were Nazi's, Walter?
You must be new here. Brian used that after Hoke was hired because people thought he was pining for RR too much.
Have you read this site at all? Brian came up with it, and I'm pretty sure he and Seth are Jewish.
It's not a Nazi slogan. Predates the Nazis. No more Nazi-ish than thinking the Commerce Clause or Supremacy Clause are strictly southern Confederacy governing concepts.
Its from the German national anthem, and predates Nazis by roughly a century.
slightly sarcastic point. In fact, historians point to this kind of thinking as one of the roots of Naz. . . oh never mind.
If historians are really arguing that, they're trying too hard. Pretty much every European country used similar propaganda in the 19th century to rally its citizens behind the nation.
Devil's Advocate: The swastika also predated the Nazi's.
No, it isn't.
Or the title?
Picture, description ("OUTSIDE LB'S COACH UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN"), location ("Ann Arbor, Michigan"). Only reason I phrased my forum topic title as a question is because the information was unconfirmed at the time of posting, and there is always a question of `hacking'.
That and it says he's the OLB coach at U of M.
/not trying to be an ass, though I realize my post comes off that way
Beyonce!
It seems to have been a fairly easy choice, very cool for him.
I hope one of his first calls go out to a Mr. Kyle Berger
oops wrong thread
That would be the SAM position only? I thought Mike and Will were coached together
Correct. Mark Smith coaches the ILB's (MIKE and WILL). I would assume Manning would also help out with weakside ends (since the positions are similar), special teams, and be heavily involved in recruiting.
Magnus - why do you need two coaches for linebacker? Are the inside and the outside that different? Would it make sense to have two WR coaches or is where the WRs lineup less important for coaching purposes?
I don't think LB necessarily requires an extra coach. He was likely mainly hired for recruiting. He still has to coach a group, though.
But it does certainly help. The two positions are actually quite different. My guess is he actually helps with the WDEs quite a bit. Just my thought because the 5-tech, 3-tech, and nose have a lot in common; WDE and SAM have a lot in common (moreso than SAM and MLB have in common); and then the two MLB positions are very similar.
You're going to get an overlap in coaches somewhere because of the number of coaches you're allowed to have.
Offense: QB, RB, Interior O-line, Outside O-line, TEs, WRs.
Defense: Interior D-line, Outside D-line, OLBs, MLBs, CBs, Safeties.
Those are pretty much the positions that need coaches, it's up to the head coach to decide which ones they will overlap.
What he said.
