have an African-American person on our staff after all? I don't think for a second that Hoke or Mattison are even the tiniest bit prejudiced, but I do find that a little uncomfortable in this day and age. . . that it could bite the U in the ass at some point.
staff? Not sure why inquiring is flaming, except to someone super-sensitive or worse, but since I had seen the issue brought up earlier I wanted to know. Still frankly IMO a little off for a school like Michigan that prides itself on being all multikulti and stuff. . .
yes.lets hire coaches purely on race,religion,hair style or any other factor that has nothing to do with their job.
It has more influence than most here believe. Age even moreso, IMO.

and then it actually happens? In the back of my mind, I'm secretly hoping someone in the AD read mgoblog one day and sort of threw out the idea to someone on the coaching staff and they thought it was an equally good idea

Although, my scenario is vastly less likely after I realized Manning was just a GA like 2 years ago. That's probably a bit more likely...

As for probable coaching alignments, he is what Meinke said:
"If Manning is hired as Michigan's outside linebackers coach, defensive coordinator Greg Mattison likely would coach the defensive ends and head coach Brady Hoke likely would work with the nose tackles."
Very happy to see Roy Manning back in Ann Arbor (he was integral to that 2004 team, as I recall), and this is another great hire for this staff, I think.
Anyways cool to see a Saginaw native join the coaching staff.
Especially in this context and I also believe youth is as well. I think Coach Hoke addressed both. I'm as old and as white as the next guy but teams who are majority African American need coaches that are too - it is important. Teams which are 100% young'ns need some guys on the staff that aren't just GA's that are close to their generation too. So yes, some of this is based on race and age, but not for any other reasons that this is helpful to connect and teach the kids on the team.

Maybe Manning is a hell of a coach and hoke saw him as a benefit being on his staff.
No one is suggesting race was the only reason or that Manning isn't completely qualified for the job. But that doesn't mean race has nothing to do with it. Being a young black man is a part of who Roy Manning is, and a part of what he brings as a coach. It's probably a part of why so many of his players at Cincinnati felt they could connect with him so well. And that's not a bad thing.

Would it be safe to expect an official HELLO post on Coach Manning?? I keep hearing about how good of a recruiter he is and would love to see some of the evidence. GO BLUE!!
