I've heard in recent days that Michigan was probably going to hire someone from outside the "Michigan family" but I've been advocating for Manning since Montgomery left.  I hope he's the choice.

One of the criticisms of Carr wan not developing a UM coaching tree, so I would be fine with trying to bring some fresh blood into the 'UM family' as long as they're, you know, good at coaching and recruiting. That said, I've read nothing but good things about Manning's re recruiting, so I would be happy with him as well.

That was all hogwash, anyway.  Coaching trees (not that they matter a great deal) are really unclear for a long time.  A bunch of his charges are now becoming defensive coordinators, offensive coordinators, and position coaches (Morrison, Wheatley, Hart, Hoke, Manning, Bedford, Loeffler, etc.), and several have coached in the NFL, too.  We might not really see the extent of his "coaching tree" for another 10-15 years, because some of his players are still finishing out their playing days or working their way up through the coaching ranks.

Hoke, Stan Parrish, Mike Debord, and Ron English have been Lloyd assistants. Only one of them has really had success, (Though I'd say just being not completely sucky at Eastern is an accomplishment), but the only one who has proven anything there is Dantonio. The others might not be long for their current jobs either. (And Beckman was only on the staff for like 2 years). And Tressel was a head coach for 25 years (compared to 13). Not saying Tressel's tree is bad either. Sure you can say "Big Ten" but if you had done it one year ago it the list would have been "Dantonio."  So a lot can change in a couple of years. Which was the point Magnus was making.

He's a local guy, played at Michigan, coached/GAed at Michigan, played in the NFL, young, black, ties to the midwest, and played a very similar position to what he'll be coaching.  I think it's important to have guys on the staff who played at Michigan or have previous experiences there, who know about the traditions and the rivalries and such.

I'm not sure if Magnus meant it this way or not, but lots of players that we recruit are African American and lots of young kids like having that familiarity especially when they are from farther away. I heard a lot about this with Charlie Strong at Louiville in that it helps when he's going into black homes and has that cultural tie.

A coaching staff needs diversity to maximize combinations of coaches to visit recruits and connect with a wide set of influencers. If Roy is energetic and communicates his NFL playing experience, then he's unique on our staff. Would Hoke send Roy to connect with a 55-year old, white, Texas HS football coach of aLB recruit? Sure. Would he send Roy to meet with Kyle Berger who probably dreams of LB in the NFL? Sure.

You need a diverse coaching staff.  You don't want a bunch of 60-year-old white guys.  You also don't want a bunch of 30-year-old black guys.  Different kids respond to different people, and it would be ideal to have someone who can connect to the kids that the other nine coaches might not be able to reach.

Exactly.  Some kids are impressed by a young guy they can relate to.  Some kids are impressed by a father figure.  Some guys want a coach who is similar to their family, and some want a coach who is the furthest thing from it.  Same goes for the parents, who have a lot of influence over the recruiting process.

1. When did expressing one's discomfort with applying Nazi slogans to an institution of higher learning one attended become "trolling?" 2. You didn't understand Brian's point when he wrote it, 3. Not sure if Mgoblog posters can be self reflective, even slightly critical without being censored, called Flamebait or trolls On second thought fellow posters, use the the nazi slogan.

Picture, description ("OUTSIDE LB'S COACH UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN"), location ("Ann Arbor, Michigan").  Only reason I phrased my forum topic title as a question is because the information was unconfirmed at the time of posting, and there is always a question of `hacking'.

Correct.  Mark Smith coaches the ILB's (MIKE and WILL).  I would assume Manning would also help out with weakside ends (since the positions are similar), special teams, and be heavily involved in recruiting.

But it does certainly help. The two positions are actually quite different. My guess is he actually helps with the WDEs quite a bit. Just my thought because the 5-tech, 3-tech, and nose have a lot in common; WDE and SAM have a lot in common (moreso than SAM and MLB have in common); and then the two MLB positions are very similar.

You're going to get an overlap in coaches somewhere because of the number of coaches you're allowed to have.

Offense: QB, RB, Interior O-line, Outside O-line, TEs, WRs.

Defense: Interior D-line, Outside D-line, OLBs, MLBs, CBs, Safeties.

Those are pretty much the positions that need coaches, it's up to the head coach to decide which ones they will overlap.
