Rothstein/ESPN fluff on Devin Gardner

Submitted by oriental andrew on

Nice piece by Mike Rothstein about Devin Gardner and his commitment to Michigan and family, how his mother and brother, David, helped mold him into the man he is today.

Also, bonus points for the 3 boys being named David, Gavin, and Devin.

Don't read the comments. Ohio and sparty trolls are out and about. Excellent article tho, he might be one of my favorite wolverines this year.

I'm expecting big things from Gardner this year. I'm not sure I can think of another QB I would take over him at the college level. I also like imagining how good next year's team will be with him as a 5th year senior.

"David asked teachers to stop telling Devin about his potential because he believed that if his younger brother focused on doing instead of the idea of it, he could reach whatever he was capable of."

You can see this in Devin's approach to the game, I think - whether he is at QB or WR, he has focused on "doing", and he has had the bonus of working with Denard Robinson both as a backup QB and as one of his targets in the offense. Gardner was able to fill in so ably and be instantly impactful as a QB in the latter half of the season last year - it seems like he never stopped preparing for that challenge, even if it meant throwing into an empty net for a while.

Very good read - thanks for posting this!
