Ross Douglas moving from RB to Slot Receiver

Douglas adjusting to another position change
When the Wolverines added Southern Cal transfer Ty Isaac over the summer, head coach Brady Hoke was unflinching on Douglas’ future, stating that he would stay at running back. But with the start of fall camp, Douglas has already headed to a new spot, now lining up at slot receiver.
“It’s for the team. That’s the biggest thing is that it’s for the team,” said Douglas of the move at Michigan’s media day Sunday. “I can do a lot of things based off my speed and athleticism, so wherever the team needs me, that’s where I’ll play.”
With a year already spent watching from the sideline, Douglas is excited about the chance to take the field this season. However, he knows he still has a lot to learn at his new spot, and is working hard to adjust to the challenge.

Ross Douglas may pass James Rogers for most position changes.
August 10th, 2014 at 6:59 PM ^
Man, he was an enigma for how bad our secondary coaching was.
August 10th, 2014 at 7:30 PM ^
I disagree. I thought James Rogers had some natural talent. He is hanging around playing professional football right now and even had 3 picks his senior year.
August 10th, 2014 at 7:51 PM ^
How he was respectably good is a mystery
August 10th, 2014 at 7:56 PM ^
I liked James Rogers. He did pretty well wherever Michigan put him. I'm glad he's making a living playing football after all the coaches and position changes he went through.
August 10th, 2014 at 7:07 PM ^
Omg, why did you remind me
August 10th, 2014 at 7:11 PM ^
How about Cam Gordon?
August 10th, 2014 at 7:38 PM ^
That's an outstanding moustache he's grown.
August 10th, 2014 at 7:01 PM ^
Worth a shot. Kid has been doing whatever he needs to get on the field.
August 10th, 2014 at 7:02 PM ^
Great to see such a positive attitude and willingness to do whatever the coaches feel team needs to succeed. Rooting for RD no matter where he lines up!
August 10th, 2014 at 7:18 PM ^
It isn't just Ross Douglas, but the other players who have experienced shifts under this staff really do exude a team-oriented attitude and are willing to do what it takes to best serve the team. That's one perk of the atmosphere surrounding this team and this staff. I also like to hear these things from players.
As for his shift, I do find it interesting, but then we don't know a lot about the extent of the evaluations that will occur with the shift to inside zone. I have a feeling that we might see an offense which, from a personnel standpoint, is decidedly unlike last year in a few places, that's for sure.

Anybody notice the o-line looks like they all shaved their heads in solidarity. There are some great pix from media day. It's another sign this team is going to be close and rally around the frustration of last year.

All we had to do last year was shave everyones heads? If only we knew!
August 11th, 2014 at 10:43 AM ^
They could wear matching My Little Pony t-shirts for all I care.
August 10th, 2014 at 7:47 PM ^
raymon taylor looks very different in picture 4/41 than i remember. so does james ross in 37/41.

Depth chart by class just updated on site for his position change. I just found out the other day that users could update that thing. Ive been complaining for weeks about how that scholarship count was wrong and other errors when all the time I could correct them myself.
August 10th, 2014 at 7:10 PM ^
anyone with "trusted user" status (500+ points) can edit the wiki pages like the depth chart or the user HoF.
August 10th, 2014 at 7:25 PM ^
Thanks. I made all the needed corrections earlier this week when i found out.
August 10th, 2014 at 7:03 PM ^
Does this mean that Michigan thinks Ty issac will be eligible this year?
August 10th, 2014 at 7:06 PM ^
I think it means they feel Drake Johnson is 100% recovered from his knee injury.
August 10th, 2014 at 7:07 PM ^
without him, Douglass would have been 5th id imagine.
August 11th, 2014 at 4:51 AM ^
Isaac is a few miles further out than he's supposed to be.
Make a decision
August 10th, 2014 at 7:16 PM ^
It's a good sign for where they think our RBs are progressing and I agree it means they think Drake is back.
August 10th, 2014 at 7:52 PM ^
Even without Douglas or Isaac, we have Green, Smith, Johnson, and Hayes. That should be enough to get us through a season.
August 10th, 2014 at 7:11 PM ^
I actually like Douglass at corner.
August 10th, 2014 at 7:17 PM ^
I wonder what is driving the move to RB/slot--ability, numbers at each position, the player's preferences, something else? I have no idea, but I do hope he doesn't capture the James Rogers trophy for most position switches...
August 10th, 2014 at 8:06 PM ^
I guess I'm not really getting the whole "James Rogers Trophy" thing. He only played two positions at Michigan - cornerback and wide receiver. There are lots of players who have played multiple positions at Michigan. If we're handing out a trophy, maybe it should go to Brennen Beyer - he went from SAM linebacker to weakside end to SAM linebacker to weakside end to strongside end. Cam Gordon went from wide receiver to free safety to weakside linebacker to SAM linebacker. There are plenty of others who have played two positions - Obi Ezeh, Mark Moundros, Obi Oluigbo, John Ferrara, William Campbell, Quinton Washington, Carson Butler, Ryan Mundy, etc. It's a pretty common thing in college football.
August 10th, 2014 at 8:24 PM ^
How about Teric Jones? I remember him going from DB to RB to Slot and then back around again.
August 10th, 2014 at 9:26 PM ^
Don't forget that one Woodson guy who played in the mid to late 90's. They bounced that poor guy all over the place. He hated it so much he quit the team and went to get a job or something.
August 10th, 2014 at 9:20 PM ^
Fair enough...if memory serves, he got bounced between those two positions multiple times. That was the gist of the comment, not the fact that he played two positions. Also, he wasn't playing offense for a bit out of personal preference and then playing out of position another like Cam Gordon.
August 10th, 2014 at 10:22 PM ^
Troy Woorfork.
August 11th, 2014 at 8:48 AM ^
I remember not so fondly the William Campbell to Guard move and the "WHAT?!" from Michigan fans that came almost in unison.
Good for Ross Douglas, doing this (again) for the team.
August 10th, 2014 at 7:18 PM ^
The team the team the team
August 10th, 2014 at 7:18 PM ^
Guys.....I think the coaches know something about Ty Isaac's status.
Until we find out for sure, here's the first Ty Isaac sighting in Maize and Blue
August 10th, 2014 at 7:28 PM ^
Why do you say that? If that is the case, then it means he didnt get it as he was never mentioned today at all on the running back depth questions while he was mentioned several times earlier in the week.
August 10th, 2014 at 7:30 PM ^
True......the Douglas-to-receiver move could be based on Csont'e York's issues.
August 10th, 2014 at 7:53 PM ^
I don't think York was really a factor at slot receiver. He's more of an outside guy.
August 10th, 2014 at 8:26 PM ^
Nice, hope he's able to invoke memories of another #32 at RB, what was his name A-Train?
August 10th, 2014 at 9:15 PM ^
by first sighting in Maize and Blue. We watched him in maize and blue returning punts last week as well as trucking a LB during the Michigan Drills.
August 10th, 2014 at 9:49 PM ^
Isaac looks like Drake...
For what it's worth, a poster on the 24/7 board said the staff at Rivals thinks Isaac will play this year. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.
August 10th, 2014 at 10:27 PM ^
So excited to see this kid in maize and blue! Hopefully we/him can catch a break and he can play this season. We might be able to get back to some #Manball.
August 10th, 2014 at 7:29 PM ^
I've got a lot of respect for Ross Douglas. Most players, I imagine, would be upset with the situation and perhaps even transfer to a school where they could see the field at their preferred positions. Douglas seems to have very positive attitude and is committed to doing whatever gives the team a better chance at success. Guys like him are valuable even if they don't ultimately become impact players.
August 10th, 2014 at 8:26 PM ^
You're back can i get the eyes for old times sake?
August 10th, 2014 at 8:26 PM ^
Ross Douglas' flexibility is admirable.
August 10th, 2014 at 7:46 PM ^
I love playes with his type of positive attitude. Good for him and hopefully he finds success and playing time in the slot
August 10th, 2014 at 8:30 PM ^
If Isaac is actually eligible this year I guess that places Ross #4 at slot as opposed to #6 at RB. Better chance to see the field and get some playing time outside of ST. Great attitude, he'll be successful no matter what.
August 10th, 2014 at 8:32 PM ^
Love his attitude. I have to imagine most kids in his situation would be upset with having to change positions. Much less change positions twice. Hope he can make a big impact.
