Rosenberg writes not one but TWO articles praising MSU

Submitted by M-Wolverine on
First he says that 2010 will be the Spartans year (defending why 2009 wasn't like everyone said before THAT year, and what good hands they are in); then how dang, they lost, and didn't even cover, but wasn't it exciting?? Sure wasn't same old Sparty (though didn't they piss it away at the end...again?!?) http://www.freep.com/article/20100103/COL22/1030470/2010-Spartans-banne…? http://www.freep.com/article/20100103/COL22/1030608/Mark-Dantonio-does-… I really am not obsessing, I've just never seen anything like it. It's gone from disliking Rich Rod to a shill for MSU. Lloyd never used to get such promising, positive articles. It not just negative press, it's such an unprecidented slant, it borders on parody. Everything Brian wrote about it Is coming true, it isn't being pulled back, but accentuated.

I had to see Roseberg's take on the MSU game and he certainly didn't disappoint. I actually find it humorous at this point. I used to really enjoy his writing in 2003 or so, I thought he was a good up and coming sports writer...now I think he is a hack with an agenda and I can't believe no one in the MSM will call him out on it.

didn't read it. I have programmed my hard drive to implode if if i ever click on Fr__p.com. If anyone bought Rosenberg's M-OSU book for a Christmas gift, I hope it is returned.

the infamous dominoes of incidents would lay the hammer on anyone buying that book on amazon. Funny comment extracted: This review is from: War As They Knew It: Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, and America in a Time of Unrest (Paperback) Poorly written drivel...Rather than buy this book, use your money to purchase another paper product that has more credibility and intrinsic value: toilet paper.

I was wondering if Amazon had deleted the reviews or if they had left them up there. You can bet that Rosenpuke asked to have them deleted. As for the new development, Rosenpuke should be fired. I hope the freep goes out of business soon. Their presence is damaging to the field of journalism at this point. They are a tabloid pretending to be a newspaper. Or at least they were the last time I read them, in August. I haven't clicked on them since then except by accident when not being careful clicking links from outside sources. Anyway, the freep is a fucking joke, but I don't find it to be funny at all.

I'm actually more amused that Rosenberg is still mgoworthy material. I didn't know that he hates Richrod and has a man crush on D'Antonio.

The freep is still trusted by casual fans as a trustworthy, objective source of information, becuase that is how they present themselves. So, to the casual fan who believes what is written in the freep, Saint Dantonio is running a great program at MSU while RR is turning UM into an outlaw program. In other words, Rosenpuke's drivel directly affects the casual fan's opinion of both schools. Worse yet, it can affect opinions of both recruits and their parents. It's sorta Orwellian; if a lie is repeated in a trusted news source enough times, it becomes "truth" to many. That is why I hate seeing the unbalanced coverage of both schools by the freep, and especially Rosenpuke. It intentionally damages UM's reputation and props up that of MSU. Neither is good for UM when they are in competition with MSU. And neither is the least bit "objective."

Rosenberg writes plenty of columns, and most are either anti-UM, pro-MSU, or both. So, are we going to have these "OMG I'M OUTRAGED" posts for every article he publishes? Damn, I hope he gets fired soon just so the threads stop. Seriously, how can someone be outraged if they already knew it was going to happen? It's as if people just now discovered Rosenberg or something. Can we use this thread to collectively express our outrage about Rosenberg, and then just nod and accept it next time he publishes an article? Because I can guarantee he will write another article - will posters be outraged once the next one comes out, too? Or better yet, let's stop supporting that site by refraining to visit it entirely!! I just find it so ironic that people are outraged despite the fact that they should know Rosenberg's M.O. by now. Then the come onto this blog and start posting links so that everyone else can go over there and support that website, too. I'm starting to think Rosenberg just writes shit about UM because he knows that some posters on this blog will express their outrage in a thread and thereby create tons of traffic for his article. Some posters on here have really reached cult level obsessions for Rosenberg and elevated him to rockstar status.

Edit: I don't even read the guy anymore.
This would be much easier if more people took your approach. It definitely beats the poster who thinks to himself "hmm I wonder what Rosenberg wrote today. Surely something unbiased and intellectually stimulating...WHAT?? MSU-slanted articles? From such a credible author? I better log onto MGoBlog and let everyone know how outraged I am!!"

I really am not obsessing . . .
Really? For the life of me, I don't understand why people continue to read the FreeP in general, or Rosenberg in particular. I can tell you with relative certainty that Rosenberg will continue to be MSU-slanted in the future. So, if you don't like it, perhaps you should stop going to that site?

What I don't get is why you and others who say they're tired about hearing about Rosenberg continue to click on threads clearly labeled to be about him. Do you feel OCD if you leave an MGoBlog thread unclicked? Just move along, read something else. Every post on here isn't for me, but I don't feel the need to tell everyone I'm not interested in the New Year's Poem or Bears-Lions thread or whatever. Other people enjoy it, and I just don't read it. You complain people still read the Freep, but then can't stop yourself from reading this. For the record, for others, I get the Detroit News, which means they send me the Sunday mash (coupons and stuff good; Freep content bad). There's a GIANT full page headline and article with his pre-press story in the Sports section. Can't miss it. So I have to go to the page to get the links to refer to it for those that want to see it. And don't delude themselves that one click is any more or less effective than posting about it or ignoring it. I'm at the point I think it's funny. It's not even subversive anymore it's so out there. I don't believe that by ignoring wrong-doing it just goes away. And since Brian keeps pointing it out, he has a problem with it too, making it very on-topic. And who knows what media sources he keeps track of while he's away; here, it's at his fingertips for future reference. Because while my post doesn't matter a hill of beans, the things he points out DOES attract attention. (And anyone hear from Brian? Wasn't he supposed to be back a little bit Thursday? He still alive? :-P ).

Yeah, the constant MSU lovefest is pretty annoying, but taken individually these columns were okay. First, I'm thankful that Rosenberg got the annual "MSU on the rise" meme started so that we can continue to laugh next season. Next, this column includes some key language that mentions how Sparty "overachieved and got a little lucky" to get to 9-4 in 2008, how "overly conservative coaching cost them close games," how "in previous years, the Spartans handled adversity about as well as I could handle a 747," and how "Michigan State is never going to dominate the Big Ten on a yearly basis." Following that, he points to the return of a productive QB, solid D-line and excellent LB (Jones) in saying that the Spartans can contend next year. Pretty reasonable. The premise of the second column was, to put it in a different light than the OP, to outline for those who missed the game (possibly a majority of the Freep's aging reader base) or want to relive it that MSU stayed close despite missing so many players because they did something very un-Dantonio and un-MSU by running an array of trick plays. This is a legitimate game-coverage column, it's well-organized, and it has some fun style in the writing. His most important line was this: "This is the hand the Spartans dealt themselves, and they handled it about as astutely as they could." I like that he references the suspensions as a team failing, rather than phrasing it in a way that paints individuals as failures.

The paper is on a par with the National Enquirer. I thought State was on the rise this year. Did I miss something? We are the ones rebuilding and basically ended up in the same shape ... less the brawl.

Not like the Leopard is going to change his spots. It's only frustrating when we somehow expect the "Road to Damascus" or I guess "Road to Ann Arbor" conversion from a guy who clearly favors MSU. Tater's comment that most people get their info re Little Brother/Michigan football is quite reasonably accurate. I know many people, knowledgeable about the game and M, who due to their lack of MgoObsession like myself and many of you and those individuals just get their recruiting and other info from the Freep and other MSM. I guess the issue is not so much that Rosenberg is going to write crap (he is) and favor the Little Brother (always) while hating on RichRod (with a passion) it's that he has a forum to shift the debate among those less informed than the crowd in here.

... read through all the Rosenberg articles, split into 4 groups -- pro UM, anti UM, pro MSU, anti MSU, and see if there really is a bias and how much so. I'd be interested in the results, just can't bring myself to read his rag anymore. I just look at the headlines and face palm.

Section 1

is that it is more "normal" than I think many at MGoBlog are willing to acknowledge. I'll explain... If you read the Columbus Post-Dispatch, or the (Madison) Wisconsin State Journal, etc., etc., what you get, regarding the resident College Football Program is a mix of routine coverage, a little inside info, some semi-critical commentary, and a very healthy heapin' helpin' of homerism. And that is mostly what we see with the Freep and Rosenberg and MSU. In fact, the Spartys have a pretty good case to make that if anything, the Freep ignores MSU to some extent, in favor of coverage (recently much of it UNFAVORABLE coverage) of Michigan. Some of it is the historical prominence and local glamor of Michigan football; some of it is simple geography (Michigan is local news, MSU is statewide news for some of the Freep's purposes). If you ask the people at the Freep, they will tell you: "We don't favor MSU! We've been getting complaints for decades about how we favor Michigan!" And they have. So I think 'Rosenberg on MSU' is more "normal" than anything else. What is really, truly abnormal -- UNHEARD OF in just about any other place or time that you can think of in the recent history of the Big Ten (cf. the papers I mentioned above) -- is the wholsale manufacture of a claim against a head coach as with Rosenberg and the Free Press, in their ongoing campaign against Rich Rodriguez, which has been organized from the Publisher and lead sportswriter down through the beat writers. Michael Rosenberg took the paper waaayyy out on a limb; the Freep is determined to cover his back now.

What is depressing is that Rosenberg is now a contributing columnist for SI. Only in American can hacks like Rosenberg, Sharp, and Valenti be gainfully employed.

I don't mind when people bring attention to Rosenberg on this site. He arguments and opinions are usually shot down with fact and example and the information I absorb here allows me to go Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting on some some Sparty mouth breather repeating Rosenberg's lies. "Of course you do, you're a first year Freep reader. You just got done reading Rosenberg's latest hatchet job. You're gonna be convinced of that until you get to Mgoblog and start reading Brian Cook."
