Every time I watch the msu defense I get jealous. EVERY TIME!

MSU's turnovers are why this game is tied. MSU is just flat out better than Stanford.
Sparty's looking like the truth
Cook makes stupid plays here and there but he is the polar opposite of Maxwell. He is a gamer. Maxwell puts up a ton of yardage but doesnt win. Cook is the opposite. Their heralded freshman Mr. Terry is going to have a tough time unseating Cook next year.
If your CBs can lock down in press coverage. If the game is played inside the hashes with 9 on 9, a DC can turn loose a whole bunch of stunts and blitzes so guys play downhill. Remember our '97 D?
Perhaps Mattison and Mallory can learn something.
He also recruited and coached most of the players on UM's national championship team. I think he knows what he is doing.
He was also way younger then.
How many times has Musburger said that Lippett is from Detroit.
They are playing at such a higher level than we are. Crazy they were 15 PI calls against Notre Dame away from the national championship.
My personal opinion is MSU is the 3rd best team in the nation. They have a defense to play with anyone and their offense need only be competent versus most teams and their offense is better than compent now. Cook has a NFL arm if he makes some bonehead plays and Langford has turned into a hell of a back and they have a very good OL. I think FSU would beat Sparty by about 14-17 and Alabama the same. MSU would slow down Auburn as they are built on the run. Everyone else I think MSU can beat. It's just their year, they are a complete team with their offense now churning. And they got better as the year went by. and a top 5 coaching staff in the nation. They'd smoke ND by 20 if they replayed now.
Next year they take a step back on defense to "only" top 10, and the offense loses a few OL but they rotate 8. They wont be going anywhere in a bad Big 10.
That sounds about right, though I think people are discounting how many players they are losing on defense. 6 of 12 starters is a big hit, and even if they cycle guys in I wouldn't expect quite the level of results. top-15 defense probably, but that could be the difference between 8 and 10 wins. Still, a good team is going to be in EL for the next couple of years.
Top 15 defense is something we haven't had in years. I would take that all day. They might not be quite as good next year but they'll only reload.
Well that will do it. Fuck you Stanford. Thanks for nothing.
It's always 3rd down that kills the Stanford D.
I'm just amazed that so few teams have been able to expose MSU's extremely aggressive defense. One good WR should be able to force MSU out of single coverage, but teams just keep running into 9 man boxes over and over again.
To be fair, they really haven't had to play good WRs that often. And that pass rush makes it hard for QBs to get enough time to find those WRs.
It is a misconception they have a great pass rush - that their one weak point. Calhoun is the only guy who gets pressure really. They completely take away the run and take up passing lanes. Which makes their results that much more remarkable - because you'd think it was reliant on pass rush. Both corners are very good so it gives their line extra time to get to the QB. Of their 3 levels of defense their LBs are #1, DB #2 and line last. But its a great run stuffing line.
Sounds simple but you also have to have a good offensive line to hold up against the front 7. Then your QB must be an accurate passer because their DB's play good man-coverage.
HAte to say it, but Sparty is really really good.
Has 9 juniors or seniors starting on D this year. This many older guys in the same system for multiple years that were recruited by the coaches so they know what is expected.
No coaching turnover.
That is the difference.
Narduzzi a really good offer. And he deserves it.
There is talk about Nards to UCONN, but he should be ale to do much better. If I were PSU, I would make it rain on him like Pacman Jones at a strip club (is that reference dated?)
Every single third down is a wide open guy in the middle of the field for msu.
Cook looked the seafty off on that TD, wow. Most college QBs don't do that as well as a senior.
Most college QBs don't throw right into the arms of opposing DBs four times in one game either.
The MSU OL is the unsung hero for them - they have picked up the vast majority of blitzes, which has allowed Cook to exploit them.
Team reminds me of our national title team, elite defense, and average to above average offense that is for the most part disciplined.
Stanford football for me is like Wisconsin basketball. I hate watching them play, they always play lights out when I root against them, and they always shit the bed when I want them to play well. Fuck that team.
Hate to admit it but this msu team is like a mirror image of the 97 Michigan team. Nasty defense and offense not flashy but does enough to win.
Agree 100% - I believe their offense is a bit ahead of where UM's was by the end of the year though. Defenses would be very interesting to match up.
I would have loved to see MSU play a team like Clemson or FSU. No chance you could get away with playing single coverage every down against those WRs.
This. MSU is not the third best team in the nation. But they don't play a single team that has an offense that can expose their defense. Stanford was the perfect match up for them. Stanford never had a chance in this game with the way they play offense
I think msu would compete with Auburn. The only teams I think would beat them are FSU and Bama.
And Notre dame!
FSU is on another level than Clemson. Clemson is a classic choke team - MSU would strangle them. FSU is just special this year - they won most of their conf games by 30. Unless I misjudged them I think they beat Auburn by 14+.
Plain and simple. MSU is well coached. Very well coached. And it shows.
That's how you overcome youth and lack of recruiting "stars".
they are what we want to be
Great defense. "Manball" offense. Above average special teams (kicker missed 1 FG, punter is top 3 in the nation). Great coaching staff. 11+ wins 3 of the past 4 years.
Yes everything we want to be. Unfortunately I think Dantonio has built Wisconsin 2.0 in state
At this rate there will not be an East Lansing tomorrow.
Stop running the football!!
Someone get Borges away from Stanford. Unless they want to keep him
I didn't think their playcalling was that bad on that series - the pass just should have been completed.
Stanford has just killed itself with drops, on both sides of the ball.
I think MSU has this one in the bag. Which is good for the Big Ten I guess.
Fuck that and fuck Staee.
I'm going to get negged for this but Dantonio and his staff are the best in the B1G. A team full of 2 and 3 stars to a Rose Bowl win and the best defense in the country..
People already knew that.
Only by the maize colored blind. MSU has far less resources than UM and OSU. At least OSU goes to a BCS bowl every year but they perform to their resources. UM and Texas and Tennessee are performing below resources. MSu is performing well ahead of resources.
