Rose Bowl: May not take B1G title game runner up or OSU

Submitted by lilpenny1316 on

Most may already know this, but to have a Rose Bowl official come out and say this is pretty interesting.  Here is the key information in the article:

The Rose Bowl does have a "cluster concept," and the teams in consideration would have to be within six ranking points of each other in the final CFP ranking.

Link (ESPN)

In case you're wondering, we'd likely have to jump to 11th to technically be in the conversation.  That would put us six spots behind OSU, who'd likely move up one spot if the conference title games are all chalk.  I doubt the Rose Bowl would take us, but they know there'd be an energized fan base ready to buy up all the tix.

EDIT: Point isn't to feed delusional thoughts.  But it seems odd for the Rose Bowl to be willing to not go with the runner-up when they have the choice.  In previous years, that would only happen if another BCS bowl took our runner-up first (ie. Iowa in 2002).

I kind of think it would remove the sweetness of going to the Rose Bowl if 9-3 teams that get crushed in their last game go.

I hope they take one of the more deserving teams, which is Iowa, MSU, or OSU.

UM team who (I might add) got crushed in their last game, even if it was the only game they got crushed  UM fans will try to tell you injuries had finally caught up with them and made it impossible to hang with a top ten team for four quarters....Please don't tarnish the Rose bowl with a lame UM team.  The Rose bowl would never recover from such a shoddy team like UM. Just think if UM would win the game that would truely destroy the Roses credibility. I wouldn't want to think what would happen if they lost big, people would demand that the Rose should be reserved for MAC Championships......OMG. Think about the children.....

Either works.

A name-brand SEC team in a New Years Day bowl game that we can actually win against if Jake is healthy.

If you asked at the beginning of the season if we would take a 10 win season with a win in a New Years Day bowl against a name-brand SEC team in Harbaugh's first year . . . you would not even be able to finish the question.

Book it.

As a worst case scenario, the B1G will have:

1 team in the playoffs (Iowa or MSU),

1 team in either of the Fiesta or Rose (loser of above and/or OSU),

That means that Michigan would play in San Diego or Florida for a bowl game.

...there is no way the Rose Bowl does not take them. When was the last time Iowa played in the Rose Bowl? Iowa fans would come in droves. If Iowa wins...I have to see Ohio State going over Michigan State because Michigan State was just here. I actually think USC is going to beat Stanford, and a potential USC v Ohio State Rose Bowl Game would be huge.

That article says that the Rose Bowl might not take the loser of the BIG championship game and might take OSU instead.  It does not say it might take niether the BIG runner-up or OSU and pick some other BIG team.  I do not know where you are getting that from.

Since Iowa is undefeated, Michigan had to beat OSU. The only chance was... if Iowa had lost to Nebraska and MSU, plus Clemson or Bama losing in their title game. Those two losses would drop Iowa out of the top 10 and possibly even lower than us. That way MSU and OSU make the playoff, while the Rose Bowl has to choose from Iowa, Northwestern or Michigan. A three loss Michigan team could've been taken over a two loss Iowa or Northwestern. What's a better draw... Michigan vs Stanford or Iowa/Northwestern vs Stanford?

The OP clearly didn't read the article. The point is that the Rose Bowl is free to take OSU instead of the loser of the B1G Championship game. This is how this stuff works, losing in conference championships hurts teams. The same thing happened in our favor back in 2011; We missed the conference champs but MSU lost that game and the Sugar Bowl picked us over them even when they beat us head to head.

The article also says that they would almost never deviate from the rankings unless there was a situation where the higher ranked team had been to the Rose Bowl many times in the very recent past. That would have to apply to both the B1G-CG loser and OSU and it will apply to neither. This is a silly post.

This site shows that while we all do support the Wolverines, we are not irrational and live in the real world. Yes, it would be nice if Michigan got to the Rose Bowl (was there in 1997) but let's stay rational.

What we found is when schools come in multiple years, the first year they come, people are really excited and come out in droves and have a wonderful time. The second year, people are excited but fewer people come out, they buy less merchandise, and by the third year, there's a substantial drop-off.

I kind of wanted this guy to project it out to the fifth or sixth year, where he describes the small group of alums from whatever school huddled in one section near an endzone and something on how the Rose Bowl calculates rate of return.

But as the article states, in 99% of cases they will take the highest ranked team based on the playoff rankings. The exception being teams that have gone many times in a row, i.e. Wisconsin. Therefore, it will all come down to who the committee ranks higher. Presumable a 1 loss Ohio State would jump a 2 loss Michigan State and go to the Rose. If it's Iowa that loses, maybe Iowa would stay ahead though the committee could again jump OSU ahead of them. My guess is OSU ends up playing.

My sense is that the Rose Bowl will be Iowa if they lose, or OSU if they win as MSU went there last year. Anyone know if there are any rules that probhit the Big Ten having 3 teams in the BCS? That would be one in the CFP, one in the Rose Bowl, and another at-large?
