Rooting for MSU? Do you hate Duke?

Rooting for the Spartans? Laura Berman says you are: http://www.detnews.com/article/20100403/OPINION03/4030389/1004/SPORTS/D… Do you hate Duke? Coach K says he doesn't understand why: http://www.detnews.com/article/20100403/OPINION03/4030389/1004/SPORTS/D… Berman doesn't understand a rivalry, but I'm more annoyed at anyone who would bother to wear an M cap and would say they'd still root for the Spartans. As for Coach K, disingenuous much? The worst is the civil way fans should act...except Cameron Crazies, apparently.

yes...they are in the Big 10. The first word in their name is "MIchigan" but they are our bitter rivals in conference. Why should I root for Butler just because they beat U of D twice a year? Root for Duke? Yes...I sent my son to the Duke basketball camp last year and he waited in line for 75 minutes to meet Coach K and get an autograph and a few kind words from him to practice hard and to be a good team player. By his reaction it was worth the price of the camp.

I've never understood the transitive property of rooting for a team, a rival at that, just because they are in my conference. To me that's too much like rooting for my best friend to bang my recent ex girlfriend because we were in the honors program together. The only way I'd want that to happen is if she got VD, and the only way I'd want State to win is if something amazing happened, like Izzo helped deliver a baby at halfcourt. But even then, I'd only smile about it if it crapped all over him.

No, I have no problem with someone rooting for MSU if they grew up as fans or have friends at family that went there. I think its uncompelling to root against them just because they are MSU, too. I simply find the "Big 10" argument vacuous. Nothing against your preferences per se.

Is thinking you speak for all kinds of fans and can decide whom they should or should not root for. But, I love it when you Scouties come over here and pollute this board with the same VACUOUS "Who do you like as your 43rd favorite team" and "Who are you rooting for--it better not be Michigan State you asshole" millions of repetitive, stupid, nee, vacuous threads. Another thing I like about Scouties is when they come over here and bring their thesauruses (thesauri?) and use all kinds of big words so they can sound smart and stuff. For the record: GO MICHIGAN STATE! BRING THE CHAMPIONSHIP HOME TO MICHIGAN! not that the state of Michigan doesn't need a "feel-good" story or anything. Nahhhhhh

Some people are actually quite a bit smarter than you and they don't need a thesaurus. It is ok, you should just accept it. Maybe he wasn't trying to sound smart....maybe he is smart.

Nope. Can't root for MSU. They have become much too annoying in the last 2 years. I will root for some sort of time machine so I can tell Maryland to put a hand in Lucious' face.

if it were Dantonio and Sparty pigskin I may have to dwell on that awhile. We have to respect what Izzo has been able to do the last 12 years. I believe Izzo respects Michigan while Dantonio holds us in contempt and has made our rivalry personal. There is a big difference in these two men and the more professional one will always be more successful.

...and not root for them. Or even like them. And the only difference between the two coaches in regard to Michigan is how they carry themselves publically. Izzo hates Michigan. They almost got him fired when it took him 3 years to beat us; felt we bought Webber away from him (when money was going from the same source to players all over, probably MSU too, and what really turned Webber off was MSU/Izzo trying to turn Minnesota in for violations after a recruiting visit); and has rubbed it in every chance he gets. Everyone too young to remember him running up the score and winning by 50? Hell, when Beilein made his comment on how rough MSU plays, look how he bristled, and threw in a dig. He says he wants to good programs, and praises our coaches, but what he's really saying is "I love it when you hire guys who are no threat to me." we'll see his true colors when someone gets us good enough to scare him. Respect? Dantonio is the ultimate dick, but at least he's honest and not two-faced about his feelings. That I can at least respect, a little.

that Izzo built his program by calling every kid we were interested in and telling them not to consider us because we were "going to get the death penalty." We've never faced a more negative recruiter. The idea that Izzo is a classy guy who respects us could not be further from the truth. Hell, if anything, Dantonio learned to hate our guts from Izzo.

Go Butler. I'd be OK with a crushing defeat or a buzzer beater, either way. I'm also rooting for Duke, just because if they win their game tonight I win my bracket. I never really got why everyone hates Duke so much beyond the fact that they have a fantastic winning history. One of my friends tried to compare them to the Yankees, but it's not like Duke has a higher salary cap. If anything, they have to recruit even with more stringent academic requirements than most.

Headlines like: "Hungry for a winner, all of Michigan backs Spartans". From a Michigan (University of) fan standpoint, sparty success works against your school. Why would a Wolverine root for that?

With all the crap & arrogance I've taken from State fans this year ... Go Butler !!! I usually root for Big 11 teams, but not now. I'm not even watching the game. Seems like when I turn it on they pull something out of nowwhere and win. I'm to blame.

He sure can be both, but if he was an abusive, controlling, pompous ass that lost 80 percent of the time, you wouldn't hate the guy at all.

That don't engender the hate. Everyone doesn't hate U-Conn like Duke, and They've owned Duke. Duke gets unfair media hype and cover from Dickie V., ESPN, CBS (how many Duke blowouts go we have to watch tournament time?), everybody. More than better programs like NC or Kentucky. Their coach is painted as a saint, but he's one of the most foul mouthed, nasty coaches out there. Check out John Feinstein's book on ACC Basketball. And their team of hard working student athletes (read: root for the white guy) has has everything from weaselly floppers like Bobby Hurley, to outright dirty players like Christian Laettner. Let they all painted with the ssme perfect brush. That they can do no wrong. That's why people root for more storied NC when they play Duke. Not by the amount of success they've had.

Agreed. Just ask the school newspaper student sportswriters whom Coach K hauled into the locker room and yelled at them because they dared to give his team a poor grade. Ask the assistant coach who is stuck with a losing record from the season when Coach K petitioned the NCAA to removed the season from his record. Ask the referees who are abused all game from the guy who takes such pains to make such a clean and pretty face in public, but turns around and acts like a foul-mouthed sailor to the officials.

I don't have much hate for Sparty hoops, but I'll be rooting Butler, as I generally root the underdog when a real interest isn't present. I will be rooting WVU vs. Duke, and if MSU beats Butler, I'll be cheering for them over Duke, but likely not WVU.

We had this conversation a few weeks ago. I don't understand the Duke hate. Duke hate sounds more like sour grapes to me--the team does well, doesn't have embarrassing public gaffs, and plays hard. I like it when dogs win, but I'll pull for Duke over State on Sunday--easy.

my allegiences are with Xavier (and I am a little bit bitter the way we lost to Butler), I have to root against Michigan State this time on the basis that I don't want to deal with their annoying fan base if they win. Go Bulldogs.

I'm torn between Butler and MSU. On the one hand, I usually root for the Big Ten in the tournament. I like to keep the conference's reputation in basketball far above what the reputation of Big Ten football has been the past few seasons. However, the reason I am torn tonight is because I live a mere 30 minutes from Butler, and I respect the hell out of any mid-major team that can so regularly mix it up with the big boys and usually come out on the winning end. I guess, for me, I'm just looking for a good basketball game tonight. Whoever wins tonight will be the team I am rooting for Monday night.

Even if it came down to a Duke/State final, I have no qualms about rooting for Duke. State's/State fan's arrogance makes me want to puke. They just assume that we're going to cross the aisle and root for them, after the shit we've been getting from them for the past three years? They can go fuck themselves. If the shoe was on the other foot, those bastards would be rooting for ANYBODY but Michigan to win. Remember all the douchebags wearing Appalachian State tees? Or the "My favorite team is State, and whoever beats Michigan", "Have you kicked a Wolverine today?" bumper stickers? I sure as hell do. Fuck them.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I root for the Spartans when it has nothing to do with Michigan. I don't think my rooting for them one way or another will affect our recruiting. When I was in high school, my brother and I went to different schools. Naturally, they were rivals. I stuck with my school when we played each other, but I went to a lot of his games and rooted for him and his team just like any other fan. You should always root for your little brother. As the little brother, his confidence is always going to be touchy, especially since more than anything he wants to best you, and the times when you are bested by him are very very rare. We live in this state together. If he chooses out of spite and to take a sibling rivalry outside the house, that's his immaturity, and we don't have to copy it. Because we're the big brother. OTOH, I won't care that much if MSU loses [bracket talk excised by better judgement]. As for Duke, w/e, I'll really hate them when we're Final Four material every year. For now, [bracket talk again], and West Virginia can eternally suck an elf for being dicks to DickRod. So, to summarize: 1.) money yes please, 2.) Go Sparty but if you lose we can still go out for that sundae, eh sport/chap/tiger/lil' buddy/chum?, and 3.) go Blue Devils because suck it Mountaineers.

It may be different if you are from the state of Michigan. But for those of us from other states that have no real connection to MSU (I knew about three people total that were attending or going to attend State before I went to U of M), there is no real reason to root for State.
