Rooting Conundrum - MSU or ND??
So ND plays MSU in East Lansing on saturday night and I don't thnk I've ever had such a hard time figuring out who to root for. We play both teams, so head-to-head is a wash. Thought process, in bullet form:
Pros of Rooting for MSU:
- Big Ten Pride.
- Gives us the opportunity to ruin their undefeated season.
- ND loses two in a row, on national television, has legit chance to start the year 1-4. HAHA ND we hate you.
Pros of rooting for ND:
- They have a better shot than MSU at finishing the year with a good record/national ranking, which would help us in the long run.
- Would give us an extra boost of confidence to see a team we just beat go on the road and win.
- MSU loses at home on national television. HAHA MSU we hate you.
Thoughts? I'm leaning towards rooting against MSU, just because I hate Dantonio.

I'd prefer a swarm of bees. Maybe an asteroid. I'd settle for ill-tempered sea bass.
Although the 2006 ND/MSU game was pretty amusing when they played in that hurricane. Pucker pucker pucker...
September 16th, 2010 at 4:54 PM ^
Once the ill-tempered sea bass have their way with ND and Sparty, can they next take care of Mark May?

Wolverines - lots and lots of wolverines. Just as the game kicks-off the stadium rumbles and wolverines come out of holes that erupt in the ground killing and/or maiming everyone assocaited with MSU and ND.
Then they head for Columbus.

I was leaning towards rooting for ND in a game against OSU(06 Fiesta Bowl I believe).
Next day I couldn't get clean in the shower, I just felt there was a dirt even a wire brush wouldnt scrub off.
MSU wouldnt be any better.
I second the stadium wide herpes out break.

I mean, it is MSU so it has a very good chance of happening without any divine intervention or genie lamp rubs.

Sorry - this is too much. I will root for an asteroid or the herpes, but a terrorist attach is too much.

Isn't it the same end-result?
And I would say an earthquake and a meteor may not exactly be so good for Ann Arbor.

September 16th, 2010 at 4:17 PM ^
Seconded. I hope it 2-3 and I don't care who wins. Auburn and miss st had that score a few years back and they still can't live it down.
September 16th, 2010 at 3:54 PM ^
I hate MSU more and more every day. Go Notre Dame.
September 16th, 2010 at 3:55 PM ^
Personally I'm rooting for ND, only because we've played and beat them. If they beat MSU it'll make me feel even better about the win Saturday, and make me feel more comfortable about playing MSU as well.
Even if it's not all that logical or rational when broken down : )
September 16th, 2010 at 4:33 PM ^
You couldn't have spelled out my thoughts better.
Besides, I'm not rooting for ND so much as rooting for Sparty Fail.
September 16th, 2010 at 4:44 PM ^
Its hard to root against your little brother, even if he's really annoying and a bother to have around 99.9% of the time. Notre Dame fans are some of the worst to be around, with their permanent holier-than-thou attitude (pun intended). Go Sparty!
September 16th, 2010 at 4:49 PM ^
Yeah, but our little annoying brother has foresaken us. Little brother is now evil little brother. Go ND!

I was going to reply with something similar. If "similar" meant "we already beat ND and I'm so f'ing sick of State suckies I could die. Go Catholics!".
September 16th, 2010 at 3:57 PM ^
But mostly the value of the win is how they are ranked when you beat them.
If we lose to State, it doesn't matter how awesome ND's season becomes.
When we beat State, it will be more awesome if they are undefeated.
So ultimately I'll be happy either way beating State, I'd be unhappy either way losing to State.
But in general I cheer for the Big Ten teams not playing Michigan.
September 16th, 2010 at 4:34 PM ^
Tell that to Boise ;)
September 16th, 2010 at 4:52 PM ^
The chances of state being undefeated coming into our game are pretty slim. Don't they play Wiscy the week before us?
September 16th, 2010 at 5:05 PM ^
"But in general I cheer for the Big Ten teams not playing Michigan."
That was my approach before the clock. Now I root for Sparty to lose everything, every time.
September 16th, 2010 at 3:57 PM ^
Locusts.
September 16th, 2010 at 3:58 PM ^
ND winning helps us b/c we beat them on the road and in my opinion they have a better chance to get back into the top 25 at the end of the year. MSU sucks and I hate them.
September 16th, 2010 at 4:00 PM ^
I think Wisconsin would ruin MSU's perfect season the week before we would get the chance to. I don't think it will matter though since I believe ND will burn MSU through the air and win.
September 16th, 2010 at 3:59 PM ^
This game usually drives me crazy, and I normally come to the same conclusion:
I want Notre Dame to lose every game, but this one is different. Michigan just came off a big win against them, and it would make us look better if ND beat MSU. Plus, it's just a lot of fun to watch MSU lose early in the season, for the schadenfreude. We'll get our chance with MSU later, but I don't care about breaking their undefeated season (good joke) as much as really driving a nail into the coffin of their season (a win against Michigan being the one thing that can save it from disaster).
I watched the 2006 Brady Quinn rain comeback game rooting for MSU in my head, but ND in my heart, because it was just too much fun to watch. Hopefully it will happen like that again.
September 16th, 2010 at 9:40 PM ^
but hopefully neither one of these teams are close to any true "All in for Michigan" fans heart!

Wearing Michigan clothes (especially bright yellow shirts) to a game not involving Michigan is always a win.

I remember when I watched the VT- Boise game on TV I could see a maize and blue jersey in the stands.
Must have just been Denard, speeding through on his regular jog.

I'm pulling for both coaches to make asses of themselves.
September 16th, 2010 at 4:09 PM ^
I don't think either one of them needs your encouragement for that to happen.
September 16th, 2010 at 4:00 PM ^
I go with Notre Dame mainly because i Hate state more.
September 16th, 2010 at 4:00 PM ^
IMO it's clearly in our best interests to see ND win this game.
-It makes our win look better.
-It will show some chinks in the armor of a team we're going to play soon.
-It will damage MSU's reputation in-state, which is not a small consideration given the number of players we're going head-to-head with them for.
-It could lead to hilarious meltdowns by MSU radio personalities.
September 16th, 2010 at 4:03 PM ^
If MSU beats ND, especially decisively, it makes our win more suspect. And, Dantonio is such a douche, any time someone lets the air out of his balloon, I'm all for it.
GO ND!
September 16th, 2010 at 4:39 PM ^
This is exactly right, peoples opinions are near-sighted. If Notre Dame wins this game our win is instantly validated. If Notre Dame loses the game, they'll have to win about 6 in a row to give us any credit.
Ultimately it doesn't matter because we really need to beat msu, and if we beat 5-0 msu to get to 6-0, that upcoming game against Iowa is going to be the biggest game we've had in a few years!!!
