Ron Thompson - May 11th Decision Deadline

Summary: May 11th decision deadline. "Uncommitted in-state defender" in his ear to commit to UM.

I am wondering why he has such a mediocre offer list, as he is highly rated by some of the recruiting sites. Thoughts?

Hmm I wonder who the "Uncommitted in-state defender" is... Matt Godin? (Do silent commits count?) I think Ron Thompson is kinda of under the radar, but I was surprised when I saw he was a 4-star on scout when the rankings came out.

Thompson could potential be a big time TE at the next level. His film is impressive and I am a little shocked that his offer sheet isn't a little more impressive. Come on Thompson go blue and stay home!

If Thompson goes blue does that solidfy that Williams will be moved to OT?

Not at all. The coaches have said all along they intend for him to start at TE and there's no reason to suspect that will change right now unless he blows up weight-wise. Not all TE's need to be pass-catchers. There is a need for an athletic TE who can be used primarily as a blocker.

I'm pretty sure Sam Webb has said that his previous high school is largely ignored by recruiters.

As far as him being a tight end, Borges said that really likes using them, and U of M's depth chart is very thin at that spot.  Stanford sometimes had three tight ends on the field at the same time last year.  I don't know if Borges would ever do that but I point it out to show that you can use a lot of them if you want to.

A TE with his type of athleticism is a matchup nightmare for the opposing defense. A LB alone shouldn't be able to cover him so in turn the safety must help up top, leaving a void for others to exploit.

Why would his rating drop just because of the amount of offers he has or has not got? I dont understand the rating system to begin with but i would think how well they performed  in high school would be the best indication of there talent would it not?

Offer lists are a way for recruiting sites to assess prospects they may not have seen a lot of film on. They might not have been impressed with a short clip of a kid but if he's holding offers from Alabama, UM, OSU, etc. then he's probably a better prospect then they give credit for and vice-versa; if a kid looks great and holds a couple MAC offers, he probably isn't a 4*.

I agree, but it's not perfect.

Let's say you're another school and you think that Thompson is great but he's a lock to Michigan.  Why make one of your other TE prospects less convinced that you're interested by pointlessly offering Thompson?

Basically, I think that having a lot of great offers suggests something positive about a player, but having only one or two (early) great offers might not suggest anything negative.

It seems that the recruiting services weigh offers when determining star ratings.  Even if they think he looks great, if his only offers come from the MAC, then he's probably not an "All-American candidate" or a likely pro prospect, which is what 5-star/4-star kids are expected to be.

i see their line of thinking and while i understand it...i would think it would be detrimental to a recruit that he gets big time offers from like mentioned above Alabama, UM, OSU etc. So potentially a good player might not get the offers he  needs due to the recruiting sites opinions of him thus hurting his recruitment?

Big-time programs seem to operate somewhat by this principle as well.  If Auburn, Florida, LSU, Texas, etc. have all offered someone, he is probably someone whose film we should check out.

Thus all the people on this board who post names of people that we haven't offered that have "big-name" offers.  They figure that if all those schools have offered, UM should have too.

Sam Webb made a comment this morning that he expects more than a few commits to come in the next several weeks.  It'd be nice to see another rush this early in the process (oops, did I say "the process"?  apologies to all).
