I would assume that National Player of the Year is the top award. That is, if they don't have an award for girl who hits good or chick that knocks the fuck out of the ball.

As long as we can change the name "designated player" to...literally anything else would be an improvement.

It's funny as the name for an award, but if you needed to explain what Romero does to an alien who hadn't ever seen a game before that's really not a bad description.

All hail Queen Romo I: Lady of the Seven Inningdoms, Sovereign of All Free Softballers, Conqueror of the Big Ten Conference, Slayer of the Spartans of the North, Tree Nuts of the South, Lions of the East, and Devils of the West.

This is great news! I have to say I'm shocked that Lauren Chamberlain didn't make the cut as I think she would've gotten the most votes had she made it. The award usually goes to pitchers, but I think Romo has a good shot. I know Cat Osterman voted for Romo last season and will almost certainly vote for Romo again, so we've got that going for us.

Edit: Looking over stats, Lauren Haeger is very impressive. Pitching stats are close with Hawkins (Haeger has a slightly better record and ERA, though Hawkins allows fewer hits), and Haeger is also good at the plate with 15 home runs this season (Hawkins has not had even a single at bat). Hawkins, though, has had a bigger reputation for longer, and people seem to rave about her more. Hawkins is also the one big superstar pitcher for Oregon, while Florida also has Ocasio and Gourley. I do think Hawkins is a better pure pitcher, but Haeger is obviously a more complete player. In the end, I hope they'll split the pitching votes down the middle and Romo will get the award.

Glad to see her get the recognition.  Hopefully she'll bring home the award itself either this year or next.  She's come so close three times now, she'd better win it at some point!  Of course, I'm sure her focus is solely on the team's success, but for us as fans and also for the prestige of the program, these things are important.

Edit: This was supposed to be in reply to how Betsa stacks up against Haeger / Hawkins. Keep in mind that Haeger is also a good power hitter.

Thanks for the side-by-side.  Obviously some people would raise strength of schedule issues against Betsa, but our brutal non-conf balances a lot of that out in my mind, especially this year.  Taking it just by the numbers, she measures up really well against these two.  The only area where both of the other two clearly out-pace her is in terms of walks, which has been a known point for improvement for Betsa all along.  An important thing to remember, though, ias that she's younger than either of these two.  She's already almost level with the best in the land, and has the potential to keep developing.  Hitters, beware... :)

I'm actually surprised that Betsa had more innings than both, albiet only a few. We did advance further in the Big Ten Tourney than Florida in theirs. Do those teams have a 3rd mop up duty pitcher?

Romero was denied B10 POY this year.  Speculation around here clustered around two theories - one, that they didn't want us just sweeping the awards, and we already had undisputed locks on Coach & Pitcher (Hutchins and Betsa).  Also, Romero did have a little "Sierra Slump" (known to most players as "the best year of my life") during conference play, and Minny's star pitcher was fantastic.  If they were focusing solely on in-conference performance, there is a legitimate argument that Romero didn't do as well; if you take the season as a whole into account, though, she stands out ahead.
