Roh says watch out for Wormley

Big praise from @craigroh88 aimed at @chris_wormley43. Called Wormley "the 12th stage of evolution" for gaining 30 lbs of muscle in camp!

— Sam Webb (@SamWebb77) March 6, 2013

30 lbs of muscle!  Guy was already a beast at 6'5 270.  Sounds like he's destined for 3-tech, although if he's athletic enough i don't mind a 300lb 5-tech

He might need that bulk if he ends up playing some 3-tech, which is also a possibility.

Very excited to see

Mattison have a deeper rotation and be able to get more pressure without as many blitzes.  Wormley is sounding like he is close to Branch size.

Is there a chance he dropped

Is there a chance he dropped some weight from his injury and gained 30lbs from that weight and not the 270 he was listed at?

The roster

The roster from last year that is still up on MGoBlue.com lists him at 279 before his injury, so he probably lost some weight and is up to around 290ish now, but I wouldn't mind him at close to 300 pounds of pure muscle at 6'5".

300 lbs. of pure muscle- wow!

chris wormley may be a great physical specimen but he is mostly a large bag of salt water just like the rest of us.

if he indeed has 300 pounds of muscle, his total body weight  would likely exceed 600 pounds.  the rest being: bone, cartilage, blood, skin, internal organs, etc.

That's about 0.7 lbs a day.

That's about 0.7 lbs a day. I'd say that's pretty much impossible if it was mostly muscle weight he was gaining.

I'm pretty sure

that was probably since he's been on campus, much longer period of time.  Especially once he tore the ACL, they typically focus on upper body strength and heavy lifting since he can't do much on his feet except rehab.

30 lbs. muscle gain

I suspect the tweet was worded imprecisely.  It was presumably in camp that Roh praised Wormley for adding the 30 lbs. of muscle, not that the entire 30 lbs. was added in camp.

It could take 1 to 1.5 years to gain 30 legit pounds of muscle without "help".

Gaining 30 lbs of pure muscle

Gaining 30 lbs of pure muscle in a whole year would be pretty unlikely, let alone 6 weeks.  Chances are he gained 30 lbs of "mostly good" weight.  I am a kinesiology major and from what I have read it is generally accepted that the average person can expect to gain 10 lbs of muscle in a year on a good program.  Wormley is clearly not the average person and is benefitting from world class training and diet advice, so his expectations would be higher, but not 30 lbs in 6 weeks high.  I would bet that 30 lbs is maybe ~20 lbs muscle and was gained in closer to 6-12 months.  There is nothing wrong with putting on some weight from fat in a sport such as football so long as speed and power is maintained.   This is beside the point though, dude is big and getting strong as he should be with Michigan's S&C staff.

Not only that, but 6-12

Not only that, but 6-12 pounds of fat on a guy that size is hardly even noticeable, let alone problematic.

I saw Wormley on campus the other week

He really didn't look like a 300 pounder. He was walking around like normal so thats good.

I think he will be a big surprise for this next year.  He has been an under the radar type guy.  He was mostly a 3* when we thought he would be a 4*.  He got injured and hasn't really been heard from much since.  I'm excited to see what he can do.

His rankings were all over the place

His offer sheet tells the story.  I wouldn't call him under the radar though.  Jake Ryan was under the radar.

He was only a 3* to Rivals, and everyone else had him a 4. 247 had him as the #3 SDE in the country.

He was hardly under the radar. A lot of people had him touted as one of the top three players in Ohio going into his senior season.

Yes, going in.  But when the rankings come out, he was hardy ranked nationally.  I guess I should have said "quiet" rather than under the radar.  He hasn't been talked about or heard from all that much.

And I guess I'm also trying to say that I think he will out produce his rankings by a long shot.

He hasn't been heard from much because be tore his ACL. He was a monster in high school and was likely to contribute as a true frosh until his injury. But yeah, since his ACL tear he hasn't done much.

Finally

I love seeing DLinemen with natural 270 frames as opposed to the RR recruits with natural 230 frames that had to bathe in bacon grease for 3 years to one day play at 280-290.

You're right....

He turned out OK. Unfortunately, OK leads to the inability to generate sacks rushing 4 and getting pretty well handled by good offensive lines.

Can you imagine how good he would be this year if he would of redshirted and RR hadn't tried moving him to LB?

No one has mentioned the

No one has mentioned the context this quote was made in. Roh said on WTKA that Wormley had put on 30 lbs of muscle BEFORE he was injured. I don't know if that is possible, that's just what Roh said on the radio.

Wormley

His tape was incredibly impressive. I know he had a tendency to sleepwalk through portions of games, but when his motor was on, he looked incredibly athletic for a big guy. I think if his knee holds up that he'll be a serious contributor.

I know he had a tendency to sleepwalk through portions of games...

That is what gives me pause re: Wormley. Like you I noticed (even in his highlight film) that he had a tendancy to take plays off or just quit on a play if he did not "make the play" in the first 2-3 seconds.

He obviously has all the physical tools necessary to be an All Conference player (possibly even All American), it's just a matter of getting him to play with full intensity all of the time. I'm certainly hoping that the coaching staff can "push the right buttons" to get Wormley to fully tap his outstanding gifts.

Hopefully some of that went to his lower body as well. I don't know how many lower body workouts he's been able to do since the knee injury.

Wormley's body compostion

Wormley's body compostion coming out of HS was already bottom-heavy; so, in an odd way, he might actually benefit from being forced to work mostly on his upper body.

This video is from the Mock

This video is from the Mock Rock Feb. 4, you can see Wormley almost directly behind Houma. He's the one that looks like the Hulk! He looks to easily be 290+ considering he's 6'4-6'5.

He's training in Arizona now, that's why he was interviewed. I'd assume a team would at least pick him up as a free agent.

someone mentioned that before

someone mentioned that before Wormley's injury last year he was destroying people at camp and was extremely hard to block..  Not really sure where the info came from as I didn't hear much from last year's camp if anyone has other info.

He did seem like someone who could make a huge impact for us regardless and I can't wait to see him get some gametime

I loved Roh but honestly I had way higher expectations for him. I do not think he has reached his "ceiling" of potential. Just think if he had 4 years under Mattison.

Hope he can move at 300.

I bet he moves to a 3-tech and Frank and Brennan are SDEs. Frank is supposedly 280 lbs and Brennan lacks agility like Roh. Taco and Mario battle for WDE.

Size is no longer an issue going forward. UM will not get pushed around.
