Is Robinson at Fault?

Submitted by Matt EM on
I'm not a schematic guru by any stretch, but it just seems to me that Robinson was much too passive in his defensive play calling. In general, he just used the bend but don't break plan, which clearly doesn't work for us. I understand the concern with Floyd getting beat downfield, but Cousins was eating our secondary alive anyway, so why not bring the blitz a bit more? On third downs in particular, he should've brought the blitz much more I thought, instead he called for zone several times in an attempt the keep the ball in front of the secondary, and Cousins just busted loose far too much. Overall, I just thought his gameplan was terrible.

We'll see what happens. Just changing one player might not drastically improve the entire front defensive line, when there is also problems in the secondary. Give this man time. We see improvement every week, and there has been dramatic improvement from last seasons team. Strength and expereince will always overshadow size. Good things are to come!

JONAS MOUTON IS SORRY HE CANT TACKLE AND HE JOGS TO MAKE A HIT AFTER HE MISSES WE NEED TO GET SOMEONE ELSE IN THERE WHO WANT TO PLAY.TOO MANY BAD READS BY PLAYERS WHO SHOUDNT BE CALLING THEM.THE MIDDLE BACKER SUPPOSE TO BE MAKING THOSE CALLS.THEY NEED TO PLAY STRAIGHT FOOTBALL AND LEAVE THOSE SCHEMES IN THE TRASH BECAUSE THEIR NOT WORKING.

are points, not yards, because only points get counted in your record. If the defense holds the rest of the teams on our schedule to 20 ppg, Michigan is probably going to win 9-10 games. It was a freak occurrence that the offense played so terribly. They will fix the problems and hopefully play a better game next week. But given the fact that walk-ons are playing significant chunks of the game, there is no DB depth, and the LBs aren't playing that well, I think Greg Robinson is doing a fantastic job holding the fort. He is proving his worth.

so a soph qb, a fresh rb, and a soph rb who spent time in jail recently running 193 yards on us was our offenses fault? The fact our dbs can't play zone coverage is our offenses fault? I could have found the soft spots in the zone today. Look, we don't have the personnel, that much is obvious. But robinson needs to understand each players weakness and adapt. He hasn't done that. If out dbs and linebackers who drop into coverage can't stop the pass, then we need to blitz way more than we have been to disrupt the pass at the qb.

so I didn't see it in one sitting, but the offense is to blame as far as I'm concerned, if someone was to make me point somewhere. We couldn't do anything with the ball until the end. Defensively, there were some holes, but early the MSU offense was varied and well executed. They pulled out all the stops. On top of that Cousins played a great game. I thought this guy couldn't run!? That was the difference in the game to me, Cousins ability to make plays.

The defense is not at fault in this game. The offense could not do anything until the very end. The defense forced 3 turnovers and our offense could not do anything with them. we just need to be patient and get better defensive players.

No. I do not think it is his fault. He has brought a new scheme to this team and in doing so it makes it seem as he has a unit full of freshman. Now some have stepped up and preformed on natural ability but as far as playing as a unit they have a way to go. You have to have people on the field that are comfortable and can coach the younger players while on the field. He does not have that right now. It is just like I said last year about RR. he is a good defensive coach and he has not forgot how to coach.

We clearly had issues moving the ball for the first 3 quarters of the game, so the defensive gameplan isn't to blame for the loss, but it certainly contributed. I understand GR is limited by the lack of overall talent and youth on the defensive side of the ball, but his play calling was certainly suspect throughout the duration of the game from my viewpoint.

I don't think it's Robinson's fault, per se, that we lost. We managed to hold a pretty good offense to 20 points in regulation. Having said that, I think we were beat in pretty much every aspect of the game today. The defensive game plan was "meh" - we couldn't get off the field on 3rd, and there were a few situations where we rushed three and paid for it. Rushing only three is obviously a pet peeve around here. At the same time though, we got enough pressure to force two picks, and there were a few good DL slant calls that stopped MSU behind the LOS. Overall, a disappointing day, and I think there's lots of blame to go around (assuming you're looking for someone to blame).

Regulation I would have anointed Gerg my new savior over Tate. Seriously do you guys read what you are typing before you press the save button. These threads are ridiculous

I think it is much more on Calvin, if we have to blame DC or OC. That's if... I'm a creature of habit and biased towards defense, though. In the years of Lloyd's OCs, I can't remember many times I blamed a loss on the defensive players or the DC. I remember many many games being infuriated with OC.

We actually surrendered fewer yards than MSU had been averaging. And 417 yards is, sadly, the fewest we've given up to a BCS opponent this season (ND gained 490 and IU gained 467). With the exception of one really bad drive in the first half - and the final play of the game - I'd say the defense played respectably.

As others have noted, 20 points in regulation should be enough. The defense played pretty well all things considered, but the offense failed to get it going until the 4th quarter.

Thanks. Happens every once and a while when it seems like some posters go through entire threads and neg anyone who posts something they don't agree with, even if it makes sense. Ah well.

There is not doubt that the offense was at fault. Way to many 3 and outs. However, the defense wasn't perfect. A couple of things bothered me, and some of which may have been Greg's fault. 1) That stupid play where they line up 3 WR to one side and run the ball the other way. They did it probably 5 times, the 3rd time being a 14 yard TD. That is the only play they ran out of that formation, yet they kept getting yards on it. PAY ATTENTION 2) We had a 3 man rush on a few 3rd downs, one in particular was like 3rd and 18 and he had all day and found someone for a first down. EVENTUALLY people will get open, I hate the 3 man rush with a burning passion deep inside my loins. 3) Can we please adjust to the stupid bubble screen? How many times do we have to give them 10 yards before we adjust? Overall, the defense played ok, minus giving up all the 3rd and longs, but those 3 things drove me crazy the whole game.

The game plan to start the game kind of sucked . . . but they stepped it up in the second half. Those bubble screens in the first half were frustrating and so was Cousins's 41-yard run, but until the game-winning TD, I thought the defense played pretty well in the second half.
