They mentioned hiring Brady Hoke so I blew up their servers. Hopefully Dave Brandon takes the lesson to heart.
Are you a member of the White Panther Party? If so, I have a few buildings in Columbus I'd like you to pay a visit.
the reaction was... violent
If it were true though.....there'd be no reason to remove it.
(keep telling myself this.....keep telling myself this.....)
you would presume that Hoke will be the coach. DAMN YOU RICH ROD!
Because a "gut feeling" does not, and should not, be means for reporting
Sam Webb works for Scout.
he is not the only person w/ a gut.
True, but have we seen a propensity for accuracy from anyone's gut but Sam's?
Is this like a beer belly gut, or like one of those large pretruding guts?
if it's hoke, my gut feeling is puke
Usually my guts only feelings produce one thing!
Was that a Charlie Weis joke?
To make sure that a middling coach was already behind the 8 ball by undercutting his first recruiting class.
Chris then took the post down because he said it was just a "gut feeling" and that many people still believe it will be Miles. I don't think it was based off of anything significant.
fair enough - i just mean he threw it out there unsolicited and it wasn't even a "coaching search premium blablabla" so i figured it was enough DEATH to create a post where the rhetoric would be simple and not OMGWEREFUCT (which i trust it would be if someone else did)
Enough with the Brady Hoke = DEATH meme, which was stupid the first 10,000 times I read it.
Nothing would make me happier than Brady Hoke coaching Michigan to 10 wins next year with an excellent offense and significantly improved defense, and then watching everyone here who equated Brady Hoke with death to admit he's a great coach WHO ACTUALLY WANTED TO COACH THIS SCHOOL, which seems to be a quality in short supply the past two coaching searches.
If Hoke coaches this team to 10 wins next year there will be those who complain the team had the talent to win 12.
I can't say that Hoke is one of the best coaches in the country, but I think Michigan could certainly do a lot worse. He's a good coach. Maybe not a GREAT coach, but truly great coaches don't grow on trees. More than that, he'd be a good fit for the program-- which, as we've all learned over the past three years, is more important than one might think.
There was only one "perfect" candidate for this job, and he's now with the 49ers. The rest all have their question marks. It's up to DB to decide who's pros outweigh their cons.
hoke doesn't run the spread and would win 2-3 games tops with the current players, after the black hole left by transfers that is, trying to play in a 1940's offensive scheme. you saw what happened every time they lined up in the I formation last year. please join the rest of us in reality.
Hoke's 1940s offensive scheme put up a hell of a lot more points and yards against Navy than we put up against the 5th best team in the SEC.
Let;s look at how Hoke's 1940s offense fared against the ranked teams that he faced:
TCU - 300 yards, 35 points
Utah - 587 yards (!!!), 34 points
Air Force - 452 yards, 27 points
How did we do against ranked teams? Not to very good, no? I would take this 1940s offense any day over an offense that can rack up yards against crap competition but which cannot score against decent competition.
Now let's look at Hoke's team stats: 19th in points for and 34th in points against. Not so bad, huh?
As to your contention that Hoke would not be able to work with the team current players and that we would win 2-3 games, I disagree. We have great wide-outs. Stonum, in fact, was recruited to play in Carr's 1940s offense. Same with Jr.
Our RBs are a bit weak, but I could see Hopkins being a beast in a more power-set. And, don't count out Denard. You seem to believe that he could only thrive in a spread option offense. I disagree. He has a great arm and if he played in a more pro-style set (although Hoke has run the spread before, so I would expect something of a mix), his arm would be fine and his ability to take off might be even more deadly, because it wouldn't be expected on every play.
Final, final point (sorry, there we a lot wrong with your post):
Hoke's defense will be a huge step up. Watching his Bowl game, I was highly impressed by how well the D players stuck to assignments and, you know tackled. Sort of like how our D-line played when he was the coach here when we won the National Championship with an amazing defense.
We could do a hell of a lot worse than Hoke.
My major gripe about Hoke and anyone who is gonna run a pro offense is that it = Denard Leaving.
That is a very fair gripe, actually. Even though I am in the "Hoke for Head Coach" camp, I share that concern.
I am hoping that in the end, Denard realizes that he actually has a better chance of going on to the NFL if he learns to play in a pro style offense. I also think that Denard loves his teammates, and that this may keep him.
Finally, Hoke has actually run the spread before. People keep forgetting this. I could see Hoke coming in and having a one-on-one with Denard and basically saying, "look kid, you are a once in a gneration talent. I want you here and I want to build this team around you. I promise that whatever scheme we run, it will be suited to your abilities."
Hoke is a player's coach. The kids love him. If anyone can convince Denard to stay it is him.
Denard is a great talent. Remember, he is only a sophmore. He should have redshirted his first year and been worked in sporadically last year, but was forced into action. Have faith in his abilities.
But, I agree with you that the decision should not be made solely around keeping Denard. Nobody wants him to leave, but if he does, remember that Devin was a huge recruit and Tate is still on the team (I hope).
Also, great point on people talking about Denard transferring really underselling his character. I think that Denard stays regardless of who is on the sidelines.
Well said….I'm so sick of whiney babies, crying about the future they know nothing about. Shut up and support the school and who the AD chooses. We are killing ourselves by posting so much negative rhetoric. If I were a recruit or coach thinking about coming to our school, I would think twice after spending two weeks in this forum.
Not that this should be a surprise to anyone, however, recruits and parents of recruits read through these online platforms to get a feel of the fan-base, state of the program etc…
This forum has some real solid credibility entwined throughout. There is a lot of great info on here, which is why you all are here. I’ve heard myriad amount of people discuss this credibility factor as well. The recruits, high school coaches, and parents also understand this.
We are killing ourselves by posting so much negative rhetoric. If I were a recruit or coach thinking about coming to our school, I would think twice after spending two weeks in this forum.
Please tell me you weren't one of the people that attacked the idea that the negativity from the fans like this didn't ultimately help with getting RR fired.
you; or, that I understand what you're asking me?
I think maybe you should read my post again if you’re searching for a question. It's actually pretty clear what was stated unlike your response.
If you just want to be a smartass and post a cocky, non-thought provoking response to gain points...well then, I believe you have accomplished just that. Have a great day and go after somebody else who wants to play your game.
were you saying that very same thing while RR was the coach? Or were you against the idea that negativity from the fans and local media in any way helped to undermine RR from the start?
Because, honestly, if it's the latter (like it seems to be with many people around here right now), that's quite hypocritical. It's a legit question, and not one that is simply "posting to get points."
If this site were not acting up, I would +1 you.
I am so sick of people talking down the guy who might be our next coach. If people want to say that Miles is a better choice, fine. If people want to call him unexciting, fine. But why is he death? He turned around 2 teams in the last few years, and did it playing good solid fundamental football.
Also, when he played ranked competition, even though his outmatched school lost, the games were close - no 37-7 or 52-14 blowouts.
I think that Hoke would do a great job. Because he lacks sizzle, he might struggle with recruiting this year, but part of that is on DB's ridiculous time table.
I for one would welcome Coach Hoke. Better to have a guy that appreciates what a great job this is than a guy who strings us along only to bolt for the NFL. (I assume that JH strung us along during December, otherwise there is absolutely NO justification for DB's time table and that would make me sad).
said it was his gut feeling, then fine. a gut feeling is a gut feeling.
but people acting like they know whats going to happen based on obviously incomplete information is silly imho...
Alas I have become death, destroyer of Blogs.
After all of this, I am not going to believe a gut feeling, rumor that got taken down from a message board. If all these rumors were true Harbaugh and Les would be co-head coaches. I wont believe a hire until I see someone at a press conference.
Sam's gut, I don't want to see it or hear about it.
I'm about to throw up all my guts if that gut feeling is accurate... Although to be fair, if we're going to be talking about guts, Brady Hoke's gut can step to just about anyone's.
If so, given the timing and recruiting meltdown that has commenced over the last month, a Hoke hire this late in the game would be a horrible performance by Brandon. However, obviously I will support Hoke and I think that he can succeed here.
I would tend to agree, given more time than Rodriguez got. The inner sanctum will give it to him, will the everyday fans??
What bothers me about this is why the hell was Rodriguez not given more time then?
He's clearly a better coach than Hoke.
the everyday fan doesn't matter because they don't have enough $$$ to donate. Sad but true.
this serves as a placeholder to substantiate your exact sentiments regarding CB. though, to be fair, Rivals has a better draw for subscribers if the coaching candidate is a Miles or Gruden. i'd have no interest in joining Rivals if it was Hoke rumored, etc.
i was unclear: i meant any site currently trying to draw subscribers is going to benefit from the fanbase having a positive reaction to a coach compared to a negative one. if the choice is les miles, i'm going to want to subscribe bc i want to know what's going on. if it's hoke, i'm no longer interested in the process and to hear more about it as it happens would just piss me off.
Not trying to be a dick but what has beaver been right about in the entire coaching search? He's guessing just like everyone else. The scout guys, except for Blue Sam, are so vague with their information that they can never be wrong. If all else fails they will use the famous, "everything is fluid" line.
Then they have some know-it-all over there who is promising he has a source who said Les Miles is a done deal -- he even promised not to post for a year if he is wrong. Way to go out a limb. There's a pretty good chance Miles will be the next coach, if not, sign up under a new username and continue to post. Yet, all of the slappies are hanging on o his every word even though he said two days ago that Mike Leach would be the next coach.
My point? Noone but DB knows what's going on right now and the people who say they do aren't being honest. We need to let the process play out.
and TJB HAVE NOT said this. They still have Les > Hoke.
at worst, by creating this post, we can see the reactionary nature of Rivals and link to this thread to show that not everything said by CB or others is the gospel, etc
The only gut feeling I care about is David Brandon's.
i care about my gut. if it hurts, i need to take something.
pure bull shit. don't believe a word of it.
He wants a guy with midwestern recruiting ties which leaves out the last three on your list. Those three are also outsiders not the so called "Michigan Man". Funny that term was coined by a guy who had coached at OSU and wasn't a "Michigan Man" before he came here. Neither was Fielding Yost for that matter.
Would coming back to his alma mater sway Miles who has a much better team returning at LSU (potential NC contender) than we do. I don't think we will be able/want to match compensation packages with LSU for Les and his staff.
You have to wonder if Hoke will be able to recruit? It's one thing as an assistant with a strong head coach, but something totally different when you have to be the closer. Despite all the talent in Cali Hoke hasn't recruited anyone highly regarded yet, three stars, two stars and no stars in his current class. Hopefully we don't have to find out.
is this better or worse than yesterday's "Gunt" feeling?
See the subject
Please not Hoke! Anything but Hoke.
He is basically saying Hoke is my man and I want you to accept it. His 47-55 career record is good enough for me so suck it.
I can't believe that this Hoke guy is going to lead is out of the dumps.
I think it will be Hoke, and I'm okay with that - provided that they announce the SOB soon and get him recruiting.
The only thing making me think it might not be Hoke is the whole
"middle of the pack on salary"
thing. Why on earth would you pay Brady Hoke anything over $2M at MAX? You wouldn't ... so why commit to paying more?
Like all of the candidates, there are plusses and minuses that could be listed for Hoke. However, many people's list of minuses seem to consist of:
If you are gagging at the thought of him being the next U-M coach, please give some thought as to why. If the reasons have to do with his actual qualifications, then gag away...but if it's just the kind of thing listed above....is that really what you want to base this decision on?
Here is why I oppose Hoke:
He's 47-50 in 8 seasons as a head coach. He took over a Ball State team that went 6-6 the previous year, and proceeded to go 4-8, 2-9, 4-7, 5-7, and 7-6 in his first 5 seasons before breaking out in the 2008 season that everyone keeps referencing as the main point in his favor.
He then left for SDSU and went 4-8 in his first year. He went 9-4 this year, but his two "big" wins are over admittedly decent Air Force and Navy teams. His other wins were over Nicholls State, 2-10 New Mexico State, 4-8 Utah State, 1-11 New Mexico, 3-9 Wyoming, 3-9 Colorado State, and 2-10 UNLV. According to Sagarin, SDSU's strength of schedule last year was 91st in the country, despite having TCU, Utah, Air Force, and Missouri on the schedule.
He recently stated that he hates spread offenses because they are "basketball on grass" and took shots at the Oregon offense.
He is, like, maybe a legit candidate at Minnesota.
An HTTP 403 error occured. Your vote was not submitted!
declined to interview him. That's all you need to know about Hoke.
Maybe in 3-5 years, if he has continued success, legit BCS schools look at Hoke, but not as he currently stands.
The only saving grace of Hoke is that hopefully he would hire awesome assistants.
My guess is that if Hoke does stay at SDSU he'll have another good year.
They'll return 7 starters on each side of the ball. Their offense should be really good as Lindley, Hilman and 4/5 of their offensive line are back. The only difficult games on their schedule are @ Michigan, @TCU, @ Air Force and vs. Boise State. They could definitely win 9 or 10 games next year.
.....spread offenses, he didn't say that he hated them. Nor did he state that he didn't utilize portions of those offenses.
"Right, wrong or indifferent, when your zone-blocking all the time 'playing basketball on grass', you practice against that all spring, you practice against that all fall, then you play a two-back team that wants to knock you off the ball. I don't think your prepared for that.
I think there's a toughness level required in football. I still believe you win with toughness and defense. That's been beaten into my head a long time, but I really believe that. The toughness of your team has to be your offensive front and your defensive front." - Brady Hoke
Also, you mention SDSU's schedule this year, and deride the SOS and their wins, but you fail to disclose that SDSU only lost those four games by a total combined 14 points. That is just under 4pts/game that they lost by, including a 5 point loss to TCU who just handed Wisky a stinging defeat in the RoseBowl.
Hoke isn't my first choice as HC at UM, but I certainly wouldn't be dissappointed if he is named. You and the other posters disparaging Hoke without getting your facts about him straight shouldn't be dissappointed either.
SDSU's game with TCU was close didn't actually watch the game.
.....that game and it came down to the final possession. SDSU scored to bring them within 5 with nearly 5 minutes still to play. TCU got a great kickoff return and bled the clock down to win the game. SDSU led nearly the entire first quarter. Their second quarter was bad with 4 three and outs and allowing 3 TCU tds, otherwise the game might have turned out differently.
These guys are full of shit. They yank around their board members to drive traffic. They pretty much guaranteed a Harbaugh hiring say they had tons of info they would unload after it happenned....guess what....it was total bull shit. They did some interview with him last summer and he said he would want to coach Michigan. BFD! The have said they think every big candidate "Is a good possibility" but "could go the other way". NO SHIT.
I think we'll be circling in on a Hoke hire once we start to hear names crop up that are definitively worse than his, guys like Ron English or a myriad of coordinators.
Rivals has been wrong umpteen times during this coaching search. The only guy I really pay attention to at Rivals is Josh Helmholdt. Chait has good opinions, but not necessarily inside info.
But Chris Balas has been leading the charge the entire time. First it was going to be Harbaugh, then it was going to be Hoke, then Miles, now Hoke again.
I'm waiting until David Brandon calls a press conference before I formulate an opinion.
How much "inside info" concerning Hoke is really inside info and how much is wishful thinking coming from the "Carr-tel?"
'course, I don't know for sure, but it sure wouldn't surprise me.
Dunno about you guys, but I still think it's going to be Harbaugh.
I get that "gut feeling" as well after those damn tasty carnitas.
how can Hoke POSSIBLY be our head coach? it completely destroys the plan to lower the new hire from the rafters at the basketball game on Wednesday!
no, our new coach weighs no more than 245 pounds -- standard limit for zipline.
That's why they're going to use an experimental fiber fabricated from carbon nanotubes that was created in the UM Engineering School labs. It's the same basic stuff as will be used in the space elevator.
Oh, ha ha, you're making a fat joke.
You must be no older than 15.
None of this stuff carries any weight until it has a meaningful source. Those would be, as examples, Dave Brandon, the Michigan Athletic Department, the athletic deparment of a school losing its coach, or the incoming coach.
I'm loving chasing rumors as much as anyone else, but, until you can point me to a meaningful source, your gut feeling is just as important as mine or the next guy's.
With that in mind, there are people who have gut feelings about Gruden, Patterson, Meyer, Stoops, and Cowher. I'd rather have people respond to those gut feelings than the gut that says Hoke.
I truly believe now after a few posts and reading numerous blogs..paid...free..news interviews..and finally talking to my nephew (works in LSU AD) taht DB is doing all these interviews for CYA. After Hoke is hired and the fan base fractures even more, he will come out and say look at who i interviewed...Gruden..Harbaugh...Miles...etc what do you want me to do when no one wants the job?!?! This will get some of the alum off his back and a few fans...but a majority will still be livid and just might hang DB in effegy outside the AD!!
I'm just tired and worried about our program...i DONT want us to be the next ND or fall to a second, possibly third tier school...we are much to proud and rich with history to let this befall us!!
There was an article posted on Rivals earlier today that talked about other late coaching hires.
Jim Tressel was hired at Ohio State on January 17th. He seems to be doing pretty well for himself.
Let's not freak out - we've only been without a coach for five days.
Which I suppose also means I'm not a Les Miles supporter. Blargh.
However, DROB will leave and the offense will be back to square run in rebuilding a pro set offense. If it is Hoke, we will be lucky to finish .500 next season. I wonder how many years a Michigan Man will get to win the b10 title or beat OSU? I bet ya it ends up being much longer than poor RR! I'm thinking a Michigan Man gets 5 or 6 years! I can see BH being much like Bump Elliot. A coach who will take a while to rebuild and may have the occasional good year or so but also having a lot of 6 and 7 win season...perhaps some sub .500 records. Are we doomed?
I thought it was always 60% 40%?
last time I had a gut feel belly button lint appeared... but on a side note, how much is name recognation worth to recruits? I'm still getting quite a few "avid" CFB fans raise an eyebrow, scratch their head and "Hoke?.... you mean he's a VT assistant?"
My gut is telling me I shouldn't of had that gas station burrito last night.
I'm hiding my anxiousness behind humor, sorry.
This is my guess at Brandon's order of preference: First--Gruden, Narrow Second--Miles, Distant third--Hoke. I think that will be the order of pursuit. If Gruden says "pass" and Miles says "I want more money and grass put down at the big house so I can eat my pre-game salad", it wil go to Hoke who we all know will jump at the chance.
You are correct sips21, and it looks like it will be Hoke. But why did they have to hire a search firm for this?
Have to know what's out there.
My guess is that Brandon is not interested in hiring Miles, but he is interested in building consensus. Talking with Miles will help that, and appease those who really want him as coach. I fully expect Miles to come out on Tuesday and talk about how happy he is at LSU, and he wants to retire as a Tiger, etc.
Gruden is seeming more plausible, but I have to think it's the person we've heard no rumors about DB actually interviewing -- Hoke.
So . . . we've got a rumor about a gut feeling. Rivals is clearly worth $120/yr.
All I have to say is if we do end up with Hoke
1) I will support him as head coach of the Wolverines, because being non-supportive of the coach is counter productive.
2) David Brandon better not be paying him the top dollar he alluded to shortly after firing Rodriguez. Maybe Hoke is good and works his way up, but he should NOT be starting as the highest paid college coach.
Dave says we can all get together soon. He also said gourmet cheesebugers for the the presser!
PS Mikey and ron are gonna be there! Lloyd too!
I'm probably in a small minority, but I'm slowly warming up to the idea of Hoke.
You can neg him all you want for his mediocre career record. I prefer to look at it as it took him a couple years to figure out a system and run it in such a way that it produced wins. It's a pretty big jump from defensive line coach at Michigan to head coach at a D-1A school, even if it's in the MAC. His last 3 years are impressive. The great last year at Ball State, 4 wins out of no talent at SDSU, then 8 wins. No they didn't play the toughest schedule but they beat the cupcakes and were competitive in every game. This is in year 2 of a total rebuilding job. If RichRod had produced those results in his 2nd year he'd have a contract through 2020.
I like that he's a little younger than Miles. Less demonstrably crazy. Plenty passionate. He's had enough time around the Big 10 to know the culture. I haven't looked real hard but I haven't seen any former players bad-mouthing him, even anonymously.
Would he be my first choice? Nope. It'd be hard to find too many people for whom Hoke would be the first choice. But among the current crop of realistic candidates I think I like him in the abstract better than Miles, way better than Gruden or any other NFL guy.
I don't have any delusions that Hoke would unite the fanbase. I don't think there is anybody (Miles included) out there who will. Harbaugh was the only shot at that and even then there would be plenty of folks saying that he's no upgrade over Rich Rod.
Pay Hoke less than top dollar to be the head man (obviously IF Brandon thinks he's ready and if he comes in with a solid plan). More money for top shelf assistants. Do it sooner rather than later so he can still get some recruits in here. Get to work on retaining the players who are already here.
.........some make him out to be. There is a lot of disinformation out there about him too that some people are taking as gospel without actually looking into his teams. Granted, when some top names like JH or Patterson or Miles are out there, Hoke as UM's HC certainly doesn't sound all that good, but if he is named HC then I believe it won't take him long to have UM winning big again.
Have consisted of:
That's not all that impressive to me.
I will support Hoke if he's the guy.
But have we even considered Ren Hoek?
Hoke = settling.........I think DB is wise enough to know this right now. I will believe this until proved wrong.
Don't get me wrong... I'm going to support anyone UM gets for a coach, it's my school after all. However I do feel the best school deserves the best coach, and is Hoke the best we can get right now?
I will say that when Hoke was rumored to be a front runner for Minnesota, and then all of a sudden his name disappeared and they went with some old dude from Northern Illinois... I figured something was up.
Somebody told him there's a chance he'll get the Michigan job, and he's sitting tight until it is his, or somebody else's for sure.
I would assume that it was some pretty strong advice for him to pull his name out of another B1G job opening.
When Les Miles gets hired at UM and Hoke heads to LSU and wins a NC with a loaded roster next year.
The Hokester knows what's best for you!
He is on his way in. I can feel it.
