Peppers at 10, which seems low.

Here's his highlights.. very impressive.
Feeling a little bit better about this if it is an offer.
Gotta love the QB/LB combo!
And with that name dad has to be an M fan.
Any good trick plays up your sleeve that could utilize a QB/LB?
He seems to flow well to the ball, fills holes quickly, and lays a good hit. I know it's high school level but he could surprise with some good coaching.
I like the highlights.
Interesting music. A choice lyric: "Drink rosé til we black out. Wake up, drink more til we pass out." Classy.
Spend some time in or around Marseilles, France, and that will seem less out of place.
Rosé = water in the south of France
make you pass out from drinking it?
If so, À votre santé/à ta santé!
I think he was hinting at this type of relationship:
Rose: water in the South of France :: Vodka: water in Russia
His dad use to be my Principal in school, BIG michigan fan
Can you shed any light on this?
Three star line backer out of Holland, MI. Project kid - or ready to play? That three star rating has me wondering. Does he hold any other offers?
He has offers by Akron, BG, and Buffalo, which would worry me but the coaches definitely know what they are doing and have proven they can spot talent regardless of star ratings and other offers. So if he does commit, I say welcome to the leaders and the best.
I don't know, star rankings are pretty huge. I mean, Denard was a 5-star QB recruit, right?
I'm pretty sure he was or else he wouldn't be doing as well as he is.
Denard was a four-star recruit You expect pretty big things out of a four-star.
Braylon and Mike Hart were more under-the-radar.
Well, Denard was a 4-star Athlete, right? I seem to remember hearing that one of the biggest reasons that he chose Michigan was because they were willing to give him a shot at playing QB (unlike, say, Florida). So he was a 4-star, but not a 4-star QB.
Also, I thought it would be jumping the gun a bit to bust out the Vinopal reference.
Always could have gone with Patrick Pancakes-Five-Star-LBs Omameh
Michigan, Florida and Kansas State all offered Denard the chance to play QB (although Florida did so fairly late in the game). Everyone agreed that he'd make a great college football player; the question was just at what position. It's not a great example.
Well, that's what I get for talking out of my ass about stuff I didn't really follow at the time.
Just look at this past recruiting class. Through some depressing amount of necessity, they haven't been able to redshirt, but look at the production we've gotten; Carvin, Dileo, Talbott, Vinopal (on special teams), Jeremy Jackson.
What has Jeremy Jackson done?
There has been talk about him starting to get some bigger offers soon, so this is the start. I would expect him to pick up a few more big ones. There's been a lot of good talk around him this year.
I'm not Tom but rivals lists Akron, Bowling Green, Buffalo, and Michigan as his only offers. I wouldn't count on him making an immediate impact LB seems like it would be difficult to come in and play right away.
I also live in this kid's neighborhood, went to the same hs, but am older so haven't watched him. But i have talked to some younger kids that said he has talked with USC apparently. This was back during st pats wkend
White linebacker?? What are we, Penn State now?? If there was orange hair on him I'd be bothered by it.
I'd even take some Rob Swett action as well.
See you in another life brother.
Just too awesome. Desmond was my favorite character. I can't count how many times I'd drop a brother at the end of a sentence just because it's so damn catchy.
Dude's sporting a 4.0 and a 27 on the ACT. Maybe we'll get a Rhodes Scholar out of him!
He's obviously Myron Rolle with more grit.
Lots of moxie.
I had a 27 and good grades, went to Michigan, and couldn't see a Rhodes scholarship using the Hubble telescope. Maybe the drinking did it...
His highlight reel shows him playing QB in a pistol offense, so he's probably a very good all-around athlete.
He runs like he just ate a whole patch of angry onions. I don't know enough to be able to tell if he's D1 material, but he seems to wrap up well and have pretty good instincts based on the few minutes of footage.
the hell is an "angry onion"?
haha yes that is awsome i actually laughed when i read that .. and i agree WTF is an angry onion .. I'll take some if i can start trucking kids like he does lol
So that is an angry onion . I might have to try one today
From my point of view(that has no "expertise")- He doesn't seem to be playing against very good competition, nothing against him, nothing he can do about that. With that said, it appears that it would be more of a project and almost certain RS.
Who knows though. Our lb crew needs so much help, hopefully he will be an impact player instantly.
So, yeah, Michigan high school football isn't exactly Texas, Florida, or California on the whole. However, West Ottawa plays in the OK-Red Conference, which is probably the best football conference in West Michigan.
Other schools in the conference? Oh, just Hudsonville, Rockford, Muskegon, East Kentwood, Grand Haven, Jenison, and Grandville. Look up those schools and you might not find a ton of high-flight D1 prospects, but what you will find are many good teams that simply win football games. I don't have the numbers in front of me for this particular season, but traditionally, and in the last few years, most of those teams are quite good (particularly Muskegon, Hudsonville, Rockford, and EK).
/former OK-Red Conference member before realignment in the early 2000s
Ok am I the only guy confused by this kids two highlight videos. He is a linebacker and fullback his junior year and then all of a sudden he is a quarterback and linebacker and he seems to have gained a lot of speed and athleticism. Maybe Im way off and he looked the same in both but thats just what i saw. But he does seem like a very smart player who wont get caught out of position and more importanly he knows how to wrap and tackle
he played QB this year (they are in the Div. 1 playoffs) is that their normal QB blew his knee out in the pre-season. This kid is an animal and we would be lucky to have him.
Also, to those who rely solely on the rivals/scout rankings, understand that what matter is how they play at the next level.
Thanks for clearing up the position change. He seems like a smart player and since he plays defense i would love to have him.
I'll be the first to say because you know someone is going to.
Can you imagine a package with Denard, Tate and Desmond in the backfield, offensive explosion!
And Devin and Patti! 5 QBs? OMGWTFYESPLZ!
You only get 4 in the backfield.
I love this offer. We will probably land him now. I am all for taking safer prospects that won't fail out or not progress. I love football players that are smart and have a hard edge. I am more excited about him than any of our other recruits because you can tell what you are going to get out of him. Man I'm pumped.
I have a theory that all successful athletes have to have a certain ratio of brains to go with their athletic ability. You can get by for a while with more of one than the other, but to succeed at higher levels you need both. I call this the David Terrell theory.
He was a stud high school and college WR who dominated thanks to his athletic ability....but he didn't have much going on upstairs. He never learned to run routes, he never learned how to practice, etc. So in the NFL when everyone is good he just was another guy and flamed out. At the opposite end is Jason Avant, for example.
After watching the UM line-backer play since I was in school in the late 90's I now believe that MLB more than any other position requires intelligence as much as ability. So I don't mind taking a flyer on a smart guy who plays MLB now rather than a freak athlete who might be able to convert to a MLB. Maybe he pans out, maybe he doesn't. But the best MLB in a long time (David Harris) was a low-rated guy out of high school.
Give him a scholarship - and find some more just like him!
So for a wide receiver, college football isn't a "higher level," but for a linebacker it is? You might want to rework that theory.
Personally, I'll be very happy to have any player contribute as much at Michigan as David Terrell did.
behind the gap, waiting for an O-lineman to blow him up...
Legit question here, sorry it's negative but live with it. How do we put this in the category of "good thing"? This is an undersized, two-star recruit who is not even rated in the top 25 players in the state of Michigan and who has other offers from 1. Akron, 2. Bowling Green, 3. Buffalo, and 4. Ummmm, that's it.
I get the whole "Rich Rod finds diamonds in the rough!" thing, but that's supposed to be, like, once in a while. I see the increased number of Buffalo and Akron style guys as a bad sign for this program.
tom indicates that bigger offers are on the horizon. perhaps we can wait to see if that happens before you undertake your rigorous analysis.
It's fair to be skeptical, can't fault you for that. Bottom line is that no one will know until he gets on the field somewhere. We'd all like a roster full of 5*s with 4.0s.
The lack of a MSU offer on an instate player is interesting. Either we beat everyone to the punch or a slight reach. However, I like his highlights.
Kenny Demens was listed as the exact same size as Morgan out of high school. He's doing OK for himself.
Carvin Johnson comes to mind as a 2 star example. Worst case scenario is we get a backup/special teams player that can at leas add depth and let us practice tackling more.
Carvin was a 3 star.
this dude will be 3* also.
According to Rivals, he's an unranked 3* ILB prospect. My bet is he gets ranked the next time Rivals reorders their rankings.
Carvin was a 2 star to Rivals and maybe both sites before M offered.
Since when is 6'2" and 225 undersized? Thats a big dude. Give him a redshirt year and he will be playing closer to 240. I do not think that that is undersized.
warranted here. If it's still Akron, BG etc. by January, then your skepticism is probably legit. Recall just last year everyone was wondering who the hell Carvin Johnson was, some bigger schools like LSU showed interest in him late (long after Michigan was in on him), and now the kid is seeing the field.
He is now a three star recruit.
3 star to rivals, 2 star to scout, not rated by ESPN
This kid is Jake Ryan 2.0. Too early to know is that's a good thing or not, but we were all like "who?" when we offered Jake Ryan then by summer we were all excited about him.
This kid looks like that same type of recruit. This is the type of kid that Wisconsin and Iowa build very good defenses around. I like it.
I'll take a defense like Iowa's or Wisconsin's to go along with our Dilithium powered offense.
This is the type of kid that Wisconsin and Iowa build very good defenses around. I like it.
Now, if UM only had Iowa or Wisconsin's defensive coaching staff...
I think it takes a good staff to turn a roster full of "gritty" or "high football I.Q." guys into a stout defense. Sadly, from what I have seen in the 3 years under RR, I don't have a lot of confidence in UM's defensive staff to pull it off.
Because the one "gritty" or "high football I.Q." guy we do have (who started out so lowly rated he walked on) has turned out to be a total bust. From where I watch the games, that is the only type of recruit i DO feel confident that the staff will turn into a player.
Jordan Kovacs seems to be excelling with our staff, wouldn't you say?
That was an impressive highlight film from my point of view. He's aggressive and knows how to hit and wrap. He looks like a good athlete as well for being a bigger guy. If I had no knowledge of his ranking I'd say he was more than worthy of an offer. I know his ranking and still feel the same by the way. Really, in life in general, there are so many factors that determine what opportunities people receive. Just because he's not the highest rated doesn't mean he's not worthy. I'm excited about this guy just like when we got in on Carvin Johnson (three star unknown who's a regular contributor as a true freshman). I hope we get his commitment because we need backers!
For whatever reason West Michigan is underscouted. There are (in my inexpert opinion) an increasing number of D-1 prospects in addition to the usual guys stocking Grand Valley's roster.
I'm tempted to go see Morgan play - West Ottawa is ranked in the top 10 in Division 1 and they get to play at #3 Grand Haven in the first round of the playoffs. WO dealt GH their only loss of the season. The winner plays the winner of #2 Rockford and Traverse City West with commit Jake Fisher. Brutal. Grand Haven has a couple fringe D-1 guys, including Dalton Stenberg who would at least be a very good MAC player.
I watched him play against Jenison and Hudsonville and he played extremely well on both sides of the ball. I wasn't convinced he was a Michigan level kid at the time and am not quite convinced yet, but he has played at a high level all year and plays at a position of extreme need so I am going to trust the coaches on this one.
Another WO kid to watch out for is their kicker Bryan Holmes (Class of '13) who was consistently putting it out of the endzone off of a 1" tee and kicked a long field goal off the ground against Jenison.
I have watched him kick all year - ridiculous leg strength. He barely missed a 54 yarder last week. He will be drawing lots of attention, so it would be great for the Wolverines to get in early.
That dudes a sophomore?? I thought he was at least a senior when we played them.
QB/LB isn't your typical HS postion combination. The fact that he plays both means to me at least that he has a higher than average football IQ.
After watching the video (I watched the one posted by Bossman on Youtube), I am convinced of three things:
1. he does have a good football IQ
2. he has the instincts needed to play LB in college (He plays down hill and he attacks the would be block and he stays behind the ball carrier as he is flowing)
3. the guy has decent footwork for a HS linebacker.
I like the offer.
Magnus - what is your take? You seem to have a pretty good grasp on these things.
He does seem solid overall, with the right amount of grit.
yes: grit. Also since M already has an MLB committed in the class this is less desperation and more a guy they just think can play.
I like the offer, hopefully we land him. This is the kind of guy that Iowa gets and turns him into an All American so why cant we???
We...untill recently had Jay freakin Hopson.
I would just like to fill a class and not have any unused/non-qualifiers scholarships. Also if he commits let's hope he's a EE.
When I clicked on the link it appears he does indeed have the 3ed star.
Can you say 3-4 Defense in the future? We are offering another middle linebacker in addition to Kellen Jones and we are recruiting Nose Tackles.
I'm sold as long as his inseam and arm length measure are in the satisfactory range.
Looks like any of a million Iowa or Wisc LB's we've played over the years that made me think "why the hell can't our linebackers do that?" As in tackle, read and react, etc.
UM has offered Morgan, but Morgan hasn't verbally committed, right?
I'm not used to seeing 70+ posts on a thread about UM offering someone.
ha, this kid lives in my neighborhood
It's always fun to see a hometown kid get some pub. I think M is looking at another kid from Holland....Rickets from Holland Public. Another not flashy type-but get the job done with great instincts of LB'er.
EDIT: Also brings grit.
yea hear about him in the papers, but literally this kid "lives" in my neighborhood, like just not that many houses down from me lol
but I must say that he moves quite quick for a relatively larger guy, with a great center of gravity. I would project a redshirt year + Barwis program would work out real nicely.
My only questions are can he react and wrap up? Been a while since I've seen that out of a LB here at Michigan.
If by a while you mean 11 days, then you sir are correct.
I have seen him play nearly every home game the last 3 years. He is a beast. He is more of a LB/FB type, but this year he was the best West Ottawa had to go with at QB - strong arm and pretty accurate. He also is surprizingly fast, and seems to like carrying several opponents on his back into the endzone. He's been banged up (shoulder I think) part of this year so was out some, especially at LB where he shines, in one of the toughest conferences in MI. He is smart and it shows on the field - seems to know where to be (been told he's a 4.0 student). He seems to be back at full strength for the playoffs- at Grand Haven Fri night!
Is this offer a negative indicator as to where we stand with other prospects, i.e. Kris Frost? That's the only potential negative.
want recruits that will play like seniors right away... Of course, some recruits need time to mature, gain some strength, etc...
And in this case, one can question whether he might already be able to play like the senior lbs we have...
he reminds me of obi ezeh...except for everything about his game, and the fact that his uniforms are black
My school played against his school in conference play (I was at the game) and he is the talk of conference right now. He is the main reason WO is as good as they are this year.
FWIW, he is a very good athlete because a friend of mine played hockey against him and said he is really good and that he hits like a truck on ice.
I was thinking about this -- assuming he was born a year or so after Desmond Howard won the Heisman, what are the chances his parents are UM fans this Desmond was named after that one? Just a coincidence?
His family is absolutely pro-UM.
His dad is a HUGE Michigan fan
...was that as a LB, when he isn't shedding blocks, he tends to smack the FB that blocks him as if HE is the FB. So, at that point, the FB is going backwards and he has free reign to get the RB.
I know it's just High School. It just intrigues me cause he's from the town I was born and raised.
I Know Desmond and I coached at West Ottawa before I moved to Illinois 2 years ago. Des is a great kid!!! He is a good athlete and has a nose for the ball. He is a tough kid and brings the wood every play against top competiton.. He needs to continue to work on his speed but he is a very hard worker nad very smart. He will bring things to Michigan that you can't teach. He should be able to contribute on special teams early. He is a Michigan fan and I am happy for him. He will be a great additon to Michigan if he commits. He is also from the same school as All American Rob Renes.
I've watched 4 games @ west ottawa this year and I gotta say. This kid is the real deal.
He's one of those that I dont care what his 40 time is, he's football fast with excellent reflexes and strength even greater than his size. Blue should pursue this with vigor because he's a real character guy too.
I don't know a whole lot about him, but think about it. Penn State seems to always make good linebackers because they know how to play the position, they may not have the best 40 time or bench press 225 35 times, but it does seem that we need guys that just have good football instincts on the defensive side of the ball. bring him in!!
He was injured when he played my school this year, so I don't think he played any defense, but he was running over our linebackers and D-line all day long. Very strong kid, and pretty fast too.
