Rivals reporting OL changes have been made ($)

Submitted by Sinsemillaplease on

The post isn't very specific but apparently changes have been made to personnel and blocking schemes as well. That's it. Let the discussion commence.

Edit: There are no other details to post. This is literally everything that Rivals posted.

Could you at least have put some basic summary that could serve as teaser material? This is no different than what Mr. Rager posted as derived from Hoke's press conference without any substantiated information. Maybe some specifics like: the team will run more iso plays, or that there have been moves at center?

Adding Bryant at RG should be an improvement based on what other players have said about his talent but this business of changing the Center mid-season makes me nervous. Hopefully Glasgow and Devin have had sufficient time to develop a rythm together, or else we're just going to continue to find new ways to turn the ball over.

That's the new blocking scheme. The cutting edge LT, C, RG, RG, RT formation. It will make running to the right easier, but might make the pass protection a little iffy on the left.

Oh what am I saying, Lewan will have the left side locked down anyways. Actually, now that I think about it, two RGs isn't sounding too crazy.

EDIT: Appropriately enough, I messed up my offensive line abbreviations.

Glasgow, if the depth chart is to be believed, is the primary backup at Center. If Miller were to get dinged, Glasgow would slide over. So he should have been getting plenty of reps at Center, not starter reps, but enough that the coaches would feel comfortable with it in case of injury. I'm guessing some of these reps will also have been with Gardner, not just pure second team. We're also coming off a bye, so that definitely helps. My guess is that they've been toying with Glasgow being the starter at center since at least Akron and probably the competition never really stopped after camp. Hopefully, it'll be a fairly transparent transition.

If internet chatter is to be believed, they've been toying with the idea of Glasgow at center (and giving him plenty of reps with the 1s) all spring, summer, and leading into fall practice. The competition between him and Miller to start at center seemed to really come down to the wire.

In sum, I agree with you that I'm not too worried about Glasgow's ability to slide over. At least not any more worried than I am about the current line's performance.

Actually, Joey Burzynski is the back-up center, and Glasgow isn't even on the depth chart as a center:

I believe that Glasgow is sliding to center, and, if you believe the depth chart, that would put Chris Bryant at LG.

The outlying possibilities, IMO (only changes to current line are noted):

  • OC Burzynski
  • OC Glasgow, LG Burzynski
  • OC Glasgow; LG Schofield; RT Magnuson (highly doubtful)
  • OC Glasgow; LG Bosch

Maybe the coaches wanted to have this new OL be the starting line from the beginning, but Bryant was hurt so they went with the backup plan. Maybe we're actually upgrading at Center in the minds of the coaches. Think about that.

Interesting to see who it will be, but with how inefficient the interior of the O-Line has been, can't say we didn't see this coming. I wonder if Hoke is just deciding to put some bigger bodies in there, like Bryant and Braden, and see if we can generate anymore push.

I think Bryant being dinged played a big role in Miller starting.  I think Glasgow at C and Bryant at G is what the coaches wanted, but Bryant being dinged but a dent in those plans.  In lieu of Bryant being hurt,  I think the coaches felt that Glasgow at G and Miller at C was a better option than Glasgow at C and someone else at G.

Would have been nice to have him. Still can't fault him for choosing Stanford for academic reasons. One of the only schools in the country that can match Michigan's academics and athletics combination.

the OP hasn't stated the changes, but from other commenters, it seems that Glasgow to C, Kalis to LG and Bryant to RG.  is that correct?

While we talk, here's ESPN's own Chantel Jennings with her guess - (full article)

In essence, the theory presented here is that Lewan and Schofield are safe where they are (I imagine we all though that), but that you may see Glasgow at center, Bryant at LG and Kalis at RG. She also mentions that Burzynski might see playing time as well.

That's pretty much what everyone thought would happen. Bryant is a good run blocker. And Glassgow was believed to always be a better blocker than Miller I thought, but Miller made better snaps. I think I'll sacrifice some poorer snaps (as long as they aren't launched over DGs head) for better blocking all around.

Did they get "click-needy" here? I thought Hoke said we'd know more AFTER today's practice. Are they just guessing so it seems like they were first to report this if it does come true?
