MSU took Dantonio over Kelly in 2007.  What did Kelly really prove to that point?  He was at CMU for 3 years where he posted a 20-16 record (granted 10-4 in 2006).

It's much more ridiculous in Michigan's case.  Michigan took RR in 2008.  At the time RR was widely considered a top 5 college football coach.  He was dominating the Big East and had a BCS bowl victory under his belt.  He was, arguably, a Pat White thumb injury away from an MNC game. There is probably not a top program in the country, including ND, who would have taken Kelly over RR after the 2007 season.

Michigan has had a couple of rough years with RR but there are no gaurantees that Kelly would have had success in Ann Arbor and it is yet to be determined if he will in ND.  If we can survive this year, RR will have Michigan fighting for championships in the years to come.  Regardless of what happens in South Bend, I'm happy with Martin's choice.

was a no brainer at the time. Totally agree.

Over Dantonio is debatable, I think. Kelly had built a powerhouse at GVSU. Ridiculous record as a head coach there, as I recall. National Championships, etc.  A Tressel-like resume at a lower division (ala Youngstown). And then, as you say, at CMU proved he could build a winner at D1 level.

Dantonio hadn't proved a ton as a head coach, but I suppose the fact he had experience at the D1 level, coached at MSU, and came from Tressel's staff made him more of a known to MSU. When all is said and done, I suspect MSU fans might wish they'd pursued Kelly. Though I think for Kelly, a place like EL would only be a stopping point on the way somewhere else (some place like ND, for example). With Dantonio, it doesn't seem like a stop.

Conclusion: Don't freak out if Michigan loses this weekend. They're not as good as they looked against Connecticut, but they're better than they'll look tomorrow.

I like most.. believe this game could go either way... with any sort of scoring possible... but no matter what we need to support our guys through the season.. a loss here isn't the end of the world... we'll still be very good and RR does have us going in the right direction.

Having said that... SCREW IT... LETS KICK SOME ASS.

I'm pretty torn on how this game will go.  I've got very few good memories of games in South Bend.  I'm staying hopeful that Denard Robinson can go crazy and turn the game, but that's a big ask.  I wouldn't be surprised to see something along the lines of what Chait predicts either.

No one knows what is going to happen (though i am sure we are going to win).  One thing I do know - the referenced predictions are 100% worthless.

I'm thinking we win this with our O and D lines.  We will be better up front on both sides.

Both are top-level coaches, and they will return the Michigan/ND rivalry to its former relevance for the next decade or two.  I would give RR the nod because he IS the "Godfather of the Spread Option," but Kelly has done a good job, too.  Besides, if a top-notch college coach named Kelly can't succeed with the Fighting Irish, the apocalypse is truly upon us.
