Couple of early thoughts:

1.  Tyler O'Connor at 13?  Maty Mauk at 19?

2.  Ondre Pipkins the 19th best DT?  You got to be nuts...

3.  Wormley a 3*, behind Pharoah Brown?

of the town for over a year, his ranking went down during the offseason, rumors about him getting soft even though he competes in track and field after football. His senior season will bring his ratings back up.

I thought it was strange to see them swap Jaleel Johnson and Pipkins with Sheldon Day. His standing has dropped off for God knows what reason. I thought it was Rivals that was high on the Army game participants, and ESPN was high on the Under Armor kids. Ojemudia is still unranked despite getting into the Army game.

in the Army game yet.  He was nominated for the game.  And they nominate over 500 players.  Royce Jenkins-Stone has been selected to play in the Army game. But Mario O has just been nominated and might get selected.  Rivals seems to be a little low on him, they claim it's because he's a tweener

How is this surprising to anyone?  RIVALS DOES NOT EVEN HAVE A MIDWEST ANALYST!  They are the least subjective, heavily biased towards southern kids service out there.  It has not become a HORRIBLE recruiting ranking service.

With that said, a few sites do still throw some well written articles out there, like the wolverine.com

However, if your into recruiting the most and have not left that place, well, i don't know what to say.

'Players such as Nashville (Tenn.) McGavock defensive end Caleb Azubike, Toledo (Ohio) Whitmer defensive endChristopher Wormley and Lago Vista, Texas defensive tackle Donald Hopkins are all talented players with high ceilings who just fell below four-star status but would be ranked higher in less deep years at their positions.'

Players that are very close to 4*:

AJ Williams (16) and Devin Funchess (17) - currently 12 4* TEs

Caleb Stacey (12) - currently 10 4* OGs

Godin (27) - currently 22 4* DTs

Wormley (21) - currently 20 4* SDEs

Ringer (11) - currently 9 4* ILBs

Gant (22) - currently 16 4* Ss

Ringer very close to a four star.  Standifer closer to a four star than I expected.  Good rankings, overall.  After they fucked us in the top 150!!! AMIRITE GUYS? AMIRITE???

For inside linebackers, they have James Ross at #4 and Kaleb Ringer at #11. At outside linebacker they have RJS at #7 and Bolden at #16. Thats an impressive linebacker group.

I spoke to Mike Farrell over at Rivals and he told me the following:

1. They see Mario as a tweener and need further evaluation before they decide. Would help if his HS coaches would play him more at OLB this coming season, since that's where he projects at Michigan.

2.  They help pick the kids for the Army All-American game and Mario is nominated but not yet selected, which helps explain why he has not been rated in the 4-star bunch. I guess his Sr. season is going to be key in how much he climbs up the charts.

ESPN and Scout are higher on Mario (both 4-star), also #94 on Tom Lemming's Top 100 -  we'll see. Either way, kid is a gamer.

They gave Caleb Stacey a 5.7-#12 OG. 2 players away from the 4 star group.

Anthony Standifer also a 5.7-#37 CB. (they list Richardson just under Reeves, bastards)

Kaleb Ringer = 5.7 #11 ILB. 1 player away from the 4 star group.

Chris Wormley = 5.7 #21 SDE. Last one out of 4 star group (Pharoah Brown last 4 star in)

Matt Godin = 5.7 #27 DT. 4 places out of 4 star group, (Sheldon Day last 4 star in)

Ben Braden = 5.7 #59 OT out of 80 named. 1 spot behind Jonah Pirsig (20 spots out of 4 stars)

AJ Williams & Devin Funchess = 5.7 #16&17. They rate Williams higher and Ron Thompson not at all. 3 spots outside of 4 stars.

Surprisingly high on AJ Williams & Caleb Stacey. (Aziz Shittu gets 5 stars and #3 DT nod.)

Joe Bolden safely a 4 star and #167 on Rivals 250, ( near James Ross at 143.)

Jarrod Wilson already a 4 star Safety.  TRich only a 5.8 Expect his rating to climb this season.

Now its proven. They don't really have an analyst team here who visits kids game in/ game out.

I'd trust anyone on Mgoblog more than Rivals.

I have to believe at least 10/12 of our kids are closer to 4* rankings.

Most of Michigan's commitments are near the 5.7/5.8 rating border (or higher). That means they're very close to four-star status. A really good class the coaches are putting together, and rivals is noticing it as well.

Ron Thompson is listed as a WR on Rivals and is not rated, nor given any stars. They do not appear to be very high on Thompson, but I feel he will be a great player in college.

I'm too worried about how any of our DL targets are ranked.  We have three DL coaches on this staff, including the head coach and a former NFL coordinator.  I'm willing to take their collective assessments over Rivals or Scout any day when it comes to the D-Line.

Its pretty much an extra ranking in addition to the players star ranking.

The ranking system ranks prospects on a numerical scale from 6.1-4.9.

  • 6.1 Franchise Player; considered one of the elite prospects in the country, generally among the nation's top 25 players overall; deemed to have excellent pro potential; high-major prospect

  • 6.0-5.8 All-American Candidate; high-major prospect; considered one of the nation's top 300 prospects; deemed to have pro potential and ability to make an impact on college team

  • 5.7-5.5 All-Region Selection; considered among the region's top prospects and among the top 750 or so prospects in the country; high-to-mid-major prospect; deemed to have pro potential and ability to make an impact on college team

  • 5.4-5.0 Division I prospect; considered a mid-major prospect; deemed to have limited pro potential but definite Division I prospect; may be more of a role player

  • 4.9 Sleeper; no Rivals.com expert knew much, if anything, about this player; a prospect that only a college coach really knew about

was considered the best of the bunch the last couple years (Scout doesn't update its offer lists!  Scout has the position groups all wrong!) but now they have no idea what they are talking about, are biased against the Midwest, etc.

Oh internet, is there anything you CAN'T do?

These guys are Michigan signees.  They will get evaluated by Rivals and ranked accordingly.  There is still a senior season to play.  Even if they didn't have dedicated Midwest guys they will still be out to see the guys that have committed to Big10 schools.  There's a chance that Rivals does not have a vested interest in underranking Michigan recruits and just doesn't think our commits are as good as we think.

Im studying for the Michigan Bar, and have not been able to dedicate my usual 3-4 hours a day on MGoBlog that I would like, so sorry if this has been covered

What happened to Brunbridge? Last I heard he was starting to lean towards Michigan, I know there is some questions about his grades. Now when WRs are discussed his name doesnt even come up. Just curious.

Thanks

Brunbridge?  That's a new one.

Wide receiver Aaron BURBRIDGE has some academic issues and might not have a committable offer at this point.

Basketball guard Carlton BRUNDIDGE is presumably going to be enrolling at Michigan soon and playing this upcoming fall.
