Rivals List of Nussmeier Recruits

I doubt we have a chance with the Alabama kids but some of the out-of-staters may be up for grabs.  I remember Bo Scarbrough being on Michigan's radar and he's yet to take his official visit.

First I agreed with the call, and said so before it happened, fail or success.

But second, I dont think it was brass balls at all.  Almost everyone post game universally agreed with it.  Things that most people disagree with are brass balls.  Hoke had a defense that was paper mache in the 2nd half and Hyde was destroying it when Miller was not, and going into OT with those 2 almost destined for a TD every period with a UM FG kicker who was iffy and a QB who in retrospect was playing on a broken foot, it was the right move and logical move.  Not ballsy.  And on top of it all UM was playing for nothing but pride - not a spot in the B10CG or anything like that.  Logical move...that is all.

I agree to disagree.

You wrote "Nobody criticizes him if he kicks it and takes his chances in OT (good or bad)"

I think on 3 diffferent message boards, full of some of the most vocal UM fans you can find, I saw about 4-5 "criticisms" out of 100s of posts.  And talk radio the callers were just about 95% supportive.  So again, I think ballsy is doing something that goes against popular opinion, not doing something almost everyone is kosher with.   In many ways he was in a win - win considering the circumstances, many of us were expecting a blow out at that point anyhow.

I think this has more to do with Dave Brandon. This looks like his kind of move -- a business move. He saw a valuable employee who was being (unfairly?) pressured by his current employer. So what'd he do? He headhunted and got his guy. When he saw an opportunity to make a splash he jumped on it. Lastly, and most importantly, he dug into his deep pockets and pulled out that Block M checkbook.

I feel him being so young is going to help us out a lot on the recruiting trail. He is a big name and has had success with every QB he's had. I thought I'd be underwhelmed but then bam we hit a home run on paper. He has a lot at the skill positions now, though unproven. I feel like Doug is going to provide Michigan with an offense that can move the ball on anyone in the big ten from day one. I am most excited about his effect on Gardner, Morris, and Wilton speight. Don't hold your breath for any Bama decommits because of this. Even Bama fans knew that he was leaving before this happened, so I'm sure the players committed did as well.

Where this could help is us regaining a commitment from someone like Campbell, keeping Damien Harris aboard, and gaining commitments from players who were considering Bama and Michigan

Ironically, since Harris's HS coach is close to Borges, his firing could actually lead to Harris having true second thoughts about Michigan, and supposedly Harris and his family are unhappy at Al being fired. Who knows whether that's true, and even if it is Nussmeier will presumably have the chance to persuade Harris to stay on board.

You'd think that the kind of offense Nuss ran at Bama would make any RB drool.

Agreed.  Some hyberpole here tonight but it is expected since 2013 has been such a shit year.  Nuzz is not a well known name - lets be honest.  He has the Bama brand behind him for 2 years that's about it.  I love the hire.  But if Bama hires Kiffin cmon - in most kids eyes thats going to be a name they know immediately and an "upgrade" in cache since it was the head coach at USC even if a failed one.   I expect zero decommits or transfers or whatever.

I am just happy we did not go for the retread with a Michigan connection because "that's what we do here at Michigan" and went with a young gun who seems to know how to develop Qbs and did very well in 2013 considering all the OL losses of 2012.  It seems if the reason for this is Kiffin going to Bama, well we just had good timing for once.

The only good thing Kiffin has done as a coach was as the OC for USC for just a few years, where they a) had crazy ass-loads of offensive talent (including two heisman winners at once), b) a great head coach, and c) a co-offensive coordinator in Steve Sarkissian who may have been the offensive brains behind the operation anyway.  It's reported he recruited well, but who can't recruit well to USC when they're an NFL draft pick machine?  I think Kiffin's actual coaching talent is still up in the air.

I'm not a big Kiffin fan, but it seems a bit self-serving to dis his ability in favor of Nussmeier when you could easily edit your post as follows:

"The only good thing Nussmeier has done as a coach was as the OC for Alabama for just a few years, where they a) had crazy ass-loads of offensive talent (including a Heisman runner-up), b) a great head coach, and c) at Washington a head coach in Steve Sarkisian who may have been the offensive brains behind the operation anyway.  It's reported he recruited well, but who can't recruit well to Alabama when they're an NFL draft pick machine?  I think Nussmeier's actual coaching talent is still up in the air."

I think Nussmeier is an obvious and demonstrable upgrade over Borges.  No one in the country wanted Borges when Hoke brought him to SDSU.  And I'll be surprised if Borges lands a big-time position going forward.

Although I think we should temper our enthusiasm about Nussmeier given that Saban was letting him go anyway, the fact remains that Sarkisian wanted him on his original staff at Washington and Saban wanted him to fill a vacancy on his staff at Alabama.  Since Nussmeier didn't have any apparent connections to either Sarkisian or Saban**, it appears those decisions were based on talent, performance, and potential - rather than the good-ol'-boy network that brought Borges (and Mattison) to Ann Arbor.

**(at MSU, for example, Nussmeier was working for John L Smith, his college head coach)

except thats not the case at all. Nussmeier coached a pretty good offense and Washington for 3 years before he was hired at Bama. When Bama hired him he was one of if not the hottest offensive coaching prospect in the country.

Hoke could have hired just about anyone and got the reaction he got from hiring Nussmeier. folks hated Borges for 2 years. It's all about hope and confidence. With Borges we had no hope for beating our rivals and no confidence for winning on the road. Some of that changed today.

There is more to the Saban/Nussmeier thing. We may never know anything  beisdes bama fan hollering. We'll see next year if bama hires Kiffin

WolvinLA2 said: "I think Kiffin's actual coaching talent is still up in the air".

My point was:  If Kiffin's coaching talent is still up in the air, shouldn't we also say that Nussmeier's coaching talent is up in the air?

Kiffin coached a pretty good offense at USC with Sarkisian to assist him = Nussmeier coached a pretty good offense at Washington with Sarkisian to assist him.

Kiffin had "crazy-ass" talent at USC = Nussmeier had "crazy-ass" talent at Alabama.

Recruiting to the NFL draft machine at USC = recruiting to the NFL draft machine at Alabama.

Nussmeier may or may not have been one of the "hottest offensive coaching prospects" in the country when Alabama hired him, but you'll have to agree that Kiffin's stock was much higher when he was hired at Tennessee and USC than Nussmeier's was when he was hired at Alabama - and Nussmeier's stock did NOT go up after two years in Tuscaloosa.

As Brian said, Alabama ushered him out the door with best wishes (much as the Ravens did with Mattison).  As I said earlier, this is a clear step up from Borges - and as you said it's all about hope and confidence.  We can take comfort in the fact that this hire appears to be about talent and performance - and not the good-ol'-boy network - but it is certainly much too early to annoit Nussmeier as the second-coming.

Let's remain cautiously optimistic until we actually see some progress.  Until then, we should remember (and be concerned) that the head coach has never been a coordinator at any level - and there's probably a good reason for that.

Doubt we flip anyone, but it would be welcome. But I am very excited to see what he should be able to do in the next 9 months. Someone started that Auburn-like turnaround thread a day too early.

We have certainly been recruiting well the past few years, even coming close on several players who ultimately chose Bama in the end. I'll never forget the feeling when we (briefly) reeled in Dee Hart (yes, I know previous regime, but still kind of a big deal at the time) and had a fighting chance with Hand, among others. This hire could be a game changer for us in the recruiting arena, in addition to what hopefully happens on the field. Our entire offensive unit has to be as giddy as this board is right now. 2014 w00000000t!!!!1!!1!!!

How often do recruits decommit due to a coordinator leaving? Seems like all Saban has to do is flash some of his jewelry earned without Nussmeier to remind those recruits it's Alabama.

Would be great to get a couple of those recruits listed but it seems unlikely.

This is a nice list, but what is most impressive is how damn happy everyone on this site is right now.  Started reading the threads and thought I was in some alternate universe.

Borges took Speight OVER Cornwell. Cornwell wanted to come to Michigan, but never got the offer.

Speight is already enrolled, but I wonder if this was October if things would be different.

Also wonder if he'll still go after Cornwell. Would be a weird recruitment, that's for sure.

We also recruited Kief kind of hard...don't know if we need another WR, but that one may be one to watch.

He'll probably try to get Scarbrough, but I doubt he flips that one.

All 3 may be worth paying attention to a least for a little bit.

In the end, we don't have very much room in this class. I'd be interested to see this list for 2015 recruits.

Agree, although I wonder if this might have an effect on the running back from MN.  UM's running game has been garbage the past 2 years and now UM brings in the OC from the school that's had a dominant run game for a few years and churned out some stud running backs.  Not sure if ends up swaying him but it might definitely make him take a closer look at UM.

Yeah, I was thinking about that too.  Some "experts" had him leaning toward Michigan before today's events, and I can only imagine this would be a plus for him.  Seeing all of the young, talented OLs we have probably doesn't hurt either.  "Hey see all those huge guys - they'll all still be here for your entire career."

David Cornwell was an early enrollee and I think is on the Bama campus already.

Derek Kief was already dismissing the impact of Michigan landing Nuss on his twitter.

Scarborough would be spectacular but this late in recruiting I'd be pleased if he can make an impression on Jeff Jones of Minnesota.
