Rival related rant

Maybe I will get slaughtered for this, I don't know, but I felt it needed to be stated if for no other reason than I cant argue with everyone who disagrees with me. Simply put, how can any Michigan fan root for MSU this weekend? I dont subscribe to the strength of conference perception argument. I dont root for MSU against anyone except OSU and possibly Notre Dame depending on who needs to lose to make Michigan look better by whatever metric I have decided to apply in my head. I dont care about the Big Ten, I care about Michigan. Rooting for MSU, OSU, or Notre Dame (except in rare examples cited above) is tantamount to treason. The fabrication that MSU is the Big Tens great hope is bullshit and I refuse to allow ESPN or any other site full of hacks to convince me otherwise. Where does ESPN (or any other site) come up with this theory??? Am I alone? Please tell me I'm not alone... Relevant ESPN link not included because, obviously.

I'm rooting for an Oregon win, but a relatively narrow one.  One that doesn't hurt MSU too much in the rankings, and sets up a good showdown with Michigan in EL later in the season.

Then I'm hoping that Michigan beats them like a dirty rug.  A spirit crushing loss that causes the lamentation of their fans, and the rending of garments throughout EL.  A pain that makes the pain Wesley suffered on Count Rugen's rack in The Princess Bride seem minor.  And I further hope that their loss to Michigan sets them on a downward spiral.  For old times' sake.

This root for your conference crap has been created by the media and sadly about half of you buy into it. Hating and rooting against your rivals is what makes fall Saturdays so special. If we win all of our games that will take care of everything regardless of what are conference opponents do. Wake up people.

Fergodsake! I love watching OSU, MSU, and ND lose almost as much as I love watching Michigan win. That is college football. The best day of any year is one where Michigan wins and the above three lose. A difficult day is when of two of the (above listed) three teams play one another as a I become torn. Usually I can find something I want to happen that benefits Michigan and that is how I decide whom to hate less that day.

Those of us that have been around for a while know that this is simply not true.  Cheering on Big Ten teams against non-conference foes has been the standard for a long time, even if you didn't notice until the media told you how to think.

IN the Big ten, you want your rivals to lose, because that increases the chances of winning the conference title.  OUTSIDE the Big Ten, you want those rivals to win so that the conference looks better, gets better bowl bids, and everyone (including Michigan) makes more money.

Wake up, Mr. Charles W...

For three reasons:

  1. There is no way 13-0 Michigan team is left out of a four team playoff. No undefeated power conference team has ever finished outside of the top 4.
  2. There is no way a one loss Michigan team makes it into the playoff unless they are the only one loss major conference team, even if they beat MSU who beat Oregon and OSU who beat VT.
  3. MSU winning the Rose Bowl, beating Oregon, making the playoff, and/or winning a National Championship is not good for Michigan in anyway. We don't want them to recruit on any of those accomplishments.

UM loses to ND then runs the table and wins the Big Ten

ND loses to USC and Stanford and goes 10-2

MSU loses close games to UM and OSU and goes 10-2

OSU loses to UM and goes 11-1

At that point UM is 12-1 with a Big Championship and has beat 2 teams that are likely in the top 15 on the road. Their only lose is an early season game against a team likely in the top 20 on the road. Not to mention how everyone else shakes out (whoever they play in the Big Ten championship game will likely be pretty high rated).

Unless all 4 other major conference champions are undefeated UM is in the playoff.

that includes Michigan being undefeated has to assume that each of the other power conferences also has an undefeated team.  There are five power conferences, the B1G is consensus weakest, ergo undefeated B1G team will be the odd team out of the playoffs.  The only way opinion of the B1G can be changed is for the B1G to start winning against respectable out of conference teams.  Northwestern and Wisconsin did the B1G no favors whatsoever.  Therefore Michigan, MSU, and OSU all have to win this weekend and NW must beat N. Illinois to redeem themselves.

and I still can't fucking believe that they are any good.

But they are.  Credit due to their coaches.

But playing Oregon in Autzen Stadium in September is pretty much suicide, I don't care who you think you are. Unless you historically suck and catch them completely napping like Indiana did back in 2004, or you are a talented juggernaut/cheater like Pete Carroll's #1 ranked USC Trojans, Autzen Stadium in September is Mordor.  It's where college football teams go to die.

Also, it's going to be hot.

Kickoff at 3:30 p.m. Forecast is 95 degrees, but it will be 100 degrees easy on that field.

Love this. Being from Michigan and having all my ass hole State fans brag about their team is the worst. I hope they get slaughtered more than I care about what guys on ESPN are saying about the Big Ten.

and Michigan beats MSU and wins the B1G ...

now let's say MSU loses to Oregon, and Michigan beats MSU and wins the B1G

In which scenario is Michigan more likely to get a playoff bid?

There are several reasons I could justify cheering for State this weekend. I don't really like Oregon very much because I'm really just tired of hearing about them when they haven't won a National Championship in recent memory. I also think that it's important for the BIG to appear strong against non-conference opponents (I don't care if you think an undefeated Michigan team will make the playoffs. Never put faith in a group of people to make the right choice in that regard especially if there are two highly ranked 1-loss SEC teams.). Lastly, I'd love for the Wolverines to walk into East Lansing undefeated with State undefeated as well and we absolutely DESTROY their lives and put that first loss on their record.

However, even though all these are valid arguments....FUCK STAEE, GO BLUE!!

I would actually extend your sentiments toward every team in the B1G.  Save for the occasional bowl game, seeing another B1G team win a game does not give me any warm and fuzzy feelings.  However, the difference between OSU/MSU and other B1G teams is that I will actively root against OSU/MSU, while I am mostly indifferent toward the performance of the others.

You will receive zero negs from me, sir. Well said. Well said, indeed.

I respect what Dantonio has built and accomplished in EL, but I'm sure he'd understand the fact that I say to hell with MSU. I hope they get slaughtered by Oregon this weekend. I hope Connor Cook goes 8/24 for 54 yards, 0 TD's, and 4 INTs. I hope Mariota makes the MSU D look like a bunch of scrubs. I'd rather get blindsided by a full-speed JJ Watt than ever root for either MSU or OSU.

If Michigan goes undefeated (hypothetically), it is not getting left out of a playoff. Period. We're not Purdue. Michigan does not need to hinge it's hopes and dreams on whether or not MSU can get it done this weekend. If we take care of ourselves and win our games, we'll be just fine.

I don't care that our conference looks good, I hate every single team in the conference and I want to see all of them lose.

There was nothing that made my skin crawl more than when friends who were Ohio State fans would say, "I'm rooting for you guys this week"  because they wanted to look better for the BCS.

I hope Oregon wins by 60 points, and I hope the Va Tech defense embarrasses the freshman QB on national television.

I'll never root for MSU, but I do believe it is better for Michigan (and the Big 10) if MSU wins. So, I'm definitely with the neutral crowd for whom it is a "win win" regardless. Schadenfreude if MSU loses. (Tears of unfathomable sadness.) Better for Big 10 and Michigan if MSU wins.

Several other things. First, I really don't like Oregon that much, and honestly, would love to see them shut down, and the talking heads shut up.

Second, as I think of Hoke, he doesn't really give a rip. His focus is on Michigan . . . Michigan playing better, Michigan winning, Michigan being Michigan. Here's my rant:  quit focusing on MSU (and OSU.) I suppose if you live in-state, you have an undying hatred for all things green. But it makes me want to roll my eyes. Michigan is doing great in recruiting, and Mattison will take no prisoners.

Third, I really don't want Michigan to back into the playoff, the way ND did with the MNC a couple years ago. If MSU and OSU are tough, and we beat them fair and square, awesome. If we can't beat them, why in the world would be want or deserve to be in the playoffs. I'm not about ducking solid competition.

I with the OP 100%. I don't like rivals. I don't want rivals to win. I just can't bring myself to root for MSU or OSU. I want to see MSU run off the field Saturday.

Right with you. The rest of the conference hates us* all year. Then wants us* to root for them all bowl season and on big stges. Blow me. Go Ducks.

Us* = OSU/UM, the scourge of the B1G

is you should never route for a team that A. Is a major in state rival. B. is a major national rival, and C. You compete fiercely with for the same recruits. That criteria means you should never route for ND, MSU, or Ohio. However, starting at bowl season last year, I have started to route for B10 teams, in non conference games. I am so sick of the B10 perception of being weak.

I think it is better for Michigan if MSU wins, but only if Michigan beats them.  I am torn, I feel dirty rooting for MSU, ND, or OSU.  I kind of want MSU to get embarassed honestly.  If Michigan were to get a playoff bid, they would have to go undefeated and that would give an advantage over a 1 loss team from another conference.

Umich97

How about MSU losing a heartbreaker to Oregon and then UM blows MSU out later this year.  Seems to me, that would be the best of both worlds.  MSU loses, but doesn't drop significantly in the polls.  Michigan pounds State and leap frogs both later.  I truly believe there is a way for UM to make the playoffs without ever having to pull for MSU or OSU.

ThadMattasagoblin

September 4th, 2014 at 6:12 PM ^

If we go undefeated, we'll be in the 4 team playoff unless there's 5 undefeated teams which won't happen. MSU winning hurts us more through recruiting and other stuff. Same with Ohio or ND winning. If Oregon wins oh well.

grumbler

September 4th, 2014 at 10:17 PM ^

This is a silly argument.  "We go undefeated" is not much more likely than that 5 teams go undefeated.

The question is, "wth equal record, which team loses out on the fourth playoff spot?  Answer; the team from the weaker conference.  Which result in Eugene would make the Big Ten look weaker, and thus hurt Michigan's chances against another Big 5 conference winner with an equal record?

Michigan will NOT go undefeated this year.  Arguing based on such a thing is absurd.  Michigan may, however, win the Big Ten with one loss.  That's the scenario to calibrate your calculations by.

Are you all high?  Does anyone think that we are actually going to go undefeated... but be kept out of the playoff because MSU loses one game?  I like this team as much as the next guy, but

I would rather Michigan be left out of the playoff undefeated (hahahahahaha like that will happen) than root for MSU and their douche coaches against anyone.  I hope Oregon scores 70.

is if MSU crushes Oregon then goes 11-1 with their only loss being at the hands of a Michigan team that went 12-1 (with a loss to a good team. OSU or ND). Then it would be helpful for us to make the playoff

Other than that, I seriously doubt MSU's win or loss really affects Michigan much. Just more talking points on how awful the Big Ten is for Mark May and David Pollack

Unless we have given up any hope of making the playoff group, we want and need MSU to win.

We have no chance for Indy unless we beat MSU (assuming we take care of all other business). OSU may lose twice in conference w/o BM, but MSU will not lose twice. We need the head to head Win. The road to Indy goes through EL for us. Beyond that, it's clear that the BIG is the most questioned conference of the power five.

We can win the BIG by beating MSU, but will never make the playoff unless MSU wins.

I predict the worst frenzy yet when teams 5, 6 & 7 are left out, especially if one or two conferences are left out all together.

The biggest help to Michigan in the grand scheme of things is for MSU to suck.  If Michigan runs the table we will get in regardless of what MSU does on Saturday.  Dantonio should be any Michigan fan's most hated sports figure in the world.  He relentlessly cheap shots Michigan and his entire purpose in life is to beat them and to overtake Michigan as the preeminent in-state program.  A win on Saturday (or any Saturday) only helps his cause.  Screw conference allegiance.  That's fine with Wisconsin last Saturday (which, if they had won, would make rooting for MSU even more unforgivable), but not our archi rivals -- especially MSU which is clearly the better program over the last 4-5 years.  I'm hoping MSU goes 1-11 in the regular season.
