I remember when people were freaked out because Rhode Island was ranked high last season. That just took me back to my childhood when the east coast was killing the NCAA. RIP Rollie

Michigan was ranked #2 to Georgetown going into the tournament and got a 1 seed. They almost crapped their pants against a game 16 seed Farleigh Dickinson and then got beat by Rollie and his Villanova team. Rollie took the boys to the Final 4 and beat Georgetown. He had so much energy and emotion. RIP my friend

a true road game (Villanova was actually the 8, not the 9, FWIW).

And Dayton led the game with 2:00 left.  Villanova took a 2-point lead with 1:00 left: Dayton missed 3 shots at the end that could have forced OT.

Weird how those things go.  NC State needed double OT to beat Pepperdine in the first round in 1983 (Pepperdine actually led by 6 with 1:00 left in the first OT, but couldn't close it out).  Villanova escapes Dayton in 1985.  Both those stories almost never got beyond Chapter 1.

For old school hoops. Agreed on your thoughts on the Big East in the eighties, but there were huge coaching personalities all over the country. Smith, Henson, Keady, Thompson, Carnasecca(sp?), Knight, Olson, it was fantastic! So,so much better than today's game. RIP Rollie.

He struck me as pushing (or pulling) 70 in the 1980s.  I thought he was much older than that.

Seemed like a good guy either way, and I hope his family takes comfort in knowing that he inspired a lot of players and programs to be their best.  He certainly got the most out of his players during their run.

This week sucks for college bball.  I grew up watching this stuff in the 70's and 80's, and Rollie was a big (literally and figuratively) part of the scene.  What a great coach he was, in a great era of bball.  I wish today's game was played more like yesterday's basketball.

RIP, coach...
