RIP AFCA Crystal Football Trophy, 1986-2013

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

As mentioned on the broadcast, the AFCA Coaches' Trophy awarded to Coaches Poll champion from 1986-1997 and the BCS from 1998-2013 is officially retired.

A damn shame Michigan never got one. Even though they EARNED it in 1997.

Wait they didn't give Michgan and Nebraska one that year?

Still good riddance. Not exactly Michigan's finest era when that was the trophy. Maybe things will get better starting in this particularly hopeful year.

Actually, I brought this up since the trophy that has been awarded for decades is being retired.

And yeah it does, since I'm a Michigan fan and there is no crystal football in Schembechler Hall.

Sorry, couldn't decide what year I could be born in. If I could, I'd push it back from 1995 to 1980.

They should have given us the trophy since the same thing happened in 94 and Penn State did not even get a split. Plus lets not forget how they beat Missouri and the fact that no #1 team since 1968 had ever lost the number one spot in either poll after a bowl win...

btw-we also got the Grantland Rice national title trophy

All the old Big 10 trophies, hopefully they will have them on display at the new Schembechler Hall.

Now it makes sense. My boss is a Nebraska fan. He was actually part of the band and he truly exemplifies what everybody says about their fans. Nicest guys around. I can now get people's frustration with them.

So stupid that they're giving up on one of the coolest trophies in sports for branding reasons... nothing they make will be able to top 27 years of history

I'm just happy I got to touch it.  It was at the UTL-II game with a big sign that said DO NOT TOUCH THE TROPHY.  Accordingly, I touched the trophy.  The security guys were about to have a heart attack.  Good times.
