As mentioned on the broadcast, the AFCA Coaches' Trophy awarded to Coaches Poll champion from 1986-1997 and the BCS from 1998-2013 is officially retired.
A damn shame Michigan never got one. Even though they EARNED it in 1997.
Fuck. We will have 3 of the next one.
On that note, I might have to put $100 every year on us winning it. Should pay off at some point.
Wait they didn't give Michgan and Nebraska one that year?
Still good riddance. Not exactly Michigan's finest era when that was the trophy. Maybe things will get better starting in this particularly hopeful year.
Nebraska got one. Just not Michigan.
Nope. The Coaches Poll gave Tom Osborne a going away present by voting them #1 in 1997, thus, creating the split title.
Michigan just has the AP trophy.
Actually, I brought this up since the trophy that has been awarded for decades is being retired.
And yeah it does, since I'm a Michigan fan and there is no crystal football in Schembechler Hall.
Sorry, couldn't decide what year I could be born in. If I could, I'd push it back from 1995 to 1980.
That is all.
Time maks no difference. This is college football, yo. Notre Dame fans still go around changing Wikipedia articles to reflect their view that polls taking place after the 1948 bowl games shouldn't count.
They should have given us the trophy since the same thing happened in 94 and Penn State did not even get a split. Plus lets not forget how they beat Missouri and the fact that no #1 team since 1968 had ever lost the number one spot in either poll after a bowl win...
btw-we also got the Grantland Rice national title trophy
All the old Big 10 trophies, hopefully they will have them on display at the new Schembechler Hall.
"I would have sworn that coaches were much smarter than writers... and I have to admit... I was wrong."
It would be so amazing to have a celebration like this again...
Now it makes sense. My boss is a Nebraska fan. He was actually part of the band and he truly exemplifies what everybody says about their fans. Nicest guys around. I can now get people's frustration with them.
Hopefully the next one will be even better (i.e. not exactly like the Lambeau Trophy) and Michigan will win every one of them
I'm assuming you mean Lombardi trophy--unless there's an important Lambeau trophy somewhere I've never heard of...
Yup my bad. Too many Packer-related Ls for late night me
So stupid that they're giving up on one of the coolest trophies in sports for branding reasons... nothing they make will be able to top 27 years of history
:( and we never got one. I wish they'd keep it.
Damn, do you have a thread starting quota you're trying to fill?
I'm just happy I got to touch it. It was at the UTL-II game with a big sign that said DO NOT TOUCH THE TROPHY. Accordingly, I touched the trophy. The security guys were about to have a heart attack. Good times.
I know what to do with it...
some very impressive hardware. Just take a look one day and you will be impressed.
The new Scehmbechler Hall is gonna be finished by summer. I'm gonna head out there to A2 like I do every year on my birthday to check it out.
