As Richt goes, so goes Nauta?

Submitted by Ecky Pting on

Steve Lorenz posted that Jay Harbaugh is visiting with Isaac Nauta today, right on the heels of Georgia's dismissal of Mark Richt. The timing could not be better, so hopefully this will work to U-M's advantage in persuading Nauta to head north!

He's planning to enroll early. The timing works in our favor. I would think it matters who they hire and what kind of offense they're going to run. They won't have long to build a relationship.

If he was that sure to go to UGA, he would have committed by now. I doubt he commits to FSU first, either.

The very idea that coaches averaging nearly 10 wins a year are getting canned because they can't beat Saban is both hysterically funny and sad.

Incoming tire fire.

Expected rate of return on firing Richt? at least 1-3 losses next year and no significant improvement long term. There's just not a big name out there.

I think Richt's inability to beat Saban is only a small part of the issue. I think most people, even the most diehard UGa fan, can understand that Saban is either the best or second best college coach in America. It's insane to think that you can beat him in a regular basis.

Richt is getting canned because he's been there 15 years, has top 5 or top 10 recruiting classes every year, and has 2 SEC titles to show for it. 0 national titles, and he lets some combo of Florida, Mizzou, or South Carolina surpass UGa as the division's best nearly every single year. He's consistently fighting for second place when he's bringing in a level of talent that's seen at Alabama, OSU, and USC, and he consistently underachieves with it. And he has a habit of losing 1-2 games every year that Georgia has no business losing.

He's a good coach, and UGa had better know what it's doing because this could end up blowing up in their faces if they get this hire wrong, but I get why they're doing it.

Doesn't this imply that Nauta is going to follow Richt to wherever he ends up next year? Furthermore, Richt is staying with UGA in other capacities. In conclusion, Richt is still with UGA so either Nauta stays there or becomes an admin. asst for him in those other capacities. (???)

about building relationships between player and staff, I would think UM has big advantage in that regard. However, the young man obviously has a desire to play in GA. If, however, they make a hire completely outside his comfort zone, i.e. Hermann or Smart as wise money is suggesting, I would think UM stands a very good chance. He knows, and would not be wondering if his chosen position is going to be utilized. All he has to do is watch tape of any of our games and look at Butt. I don't know how good Butt is overall in regard to blocking along with his pass catching abilities. I do know he has a knack for getting open which probably comes from lots of reps and being able to read coverage. Often times he is all aone and if he possessed Nauta's speed would be on a level of Eifert. Best fit = UM, but don't know if that will be enough. He would almost be a guaranteed futue millionaire if he chose us, barring unforseen injury. Fact he chose GA instead of us with all of the above is probably more telling about decision to stay in SE. If Bama ever used their TEs,, along with their wideouts, their RBs would be gaining 3,000 a year instead of 2,000.

Word is that frustration over Richt's inability to get over the hump and into national prominence culminated in the 27-3 loss to Florida a month ago; the anemic win over archrival Georgia Tech just sealed the deal. The Georgia AD chose to ease Richt out to make way for Kirby Smart. Kirby's a former GA Bulldog whom many feel is ready to shed his Nick Saban assistant skin and evolve into a head coach at a big-time program. Georgia created its coaching vacancy to get a shot at Kirby before he was wooed somewhere else. Also, Kirby recruits Georgia heavily, so if he does take the job, local recruit erosion would probably be minimal, if at all.

end up somewhere too.

Sounds like on one hand Nauta has a connection to UGa similar to Shane Morris did to UM in the aspect of being a lifelong fan, etc. Shane committed to Hoke as soon as he was able his junior year, probably site unseen. Seems like he may have even committed to Rich Rod if he would have had him. On the other hand ... if that's the case why didn't Nauta just commit a year ago?
