Wat about gerg
Rich Rodriguez Hired By CBS
the sideline reporter breaking stories with his beaver mic
Well if GERG will go to broadcasting, I hope it's not on the radio. That would be a waste of a perfectly good head of hair.
If GERG went into broadcasting it would probably be like watching Matt Millen. We already know he has no idea what he's talking about.
CBS College Sports Network
Now called CBS Sports Network. From a CBSSports.com item:
CBS Sports Network President David Berson announced the hiring of Rodriguez on Tuesday.
Rodriguez and veteran play-by-play announcer Dave Ryan will call games, and Rodriguez also will be part of the network’s weekly New York City studio show.
. . .
CBS Sports Network will broadcast more than 40 football games this season, featuring the Mountain West Conference, Conference USA and Army and Navy.
I think CBS made a good hire. RR recruited alot of the SEC kids so he'll probably have good insight on the players, themselves. My guess is he's coaching in 2012.
may be the extremely rare win / win / win / lose scenario. To wit:
RR - WIN - gets to scout potential opponents and receives cash money $$$
CBS - WIN - publicity associated with a high-profile ex coach as a broadcaster
Team RR is coach of next year - WIN - benefit from the year of scouting, etc.
Other teams in conference where RR lands - LOSE - the insight gleaned from his year of broadcasting will mean frequent and brutal beat downs
I think you guys are greatly over valuing what he really is going to get out of broadcasting games. It's not going to give him any type of realistic advantage over the competition.
What scenario do you think is better for the following year... studying the film, actively producing a gameplan against the team, and then coaching your players on how to play against said team.
or... broadcasting the game in which those two teams play.
It really isn't even close.
Also, look at the teams he's going to be broadcasting next year. He's not coaching there, he'll be an offensive coordinator in the SEC / ACC next year.
there is NO way he'll be an offensive coordinator. he's not charlie weiss; he was a successful head coach at west virginia. he will be a head coach somewhere next year. acc seems right for some reason.
I find the assumption that he'll automatically be a head coach next year to be laughable. He was a good coach at West Virginia, good for him.
Will he have Casteel with him at his next job? If not, why would anyone think he's going to be successful again as a head coach?
Coaches aren't just handed another head coaching position after leading a team to a three-year pile of garbage like RR just produced at MICH unless you're Gene Chizik. With regard to winning rivalry games, bringing in sufficient recruits to stockpile a roster, in-game adjustments, consistency in coaching and player development on defense, following NCAA rules, and effecting a roster transition after a long-time Hall of Fame coach retired, Rich Rod was severely exposed the past three years.
You mention Weis. He went to 2 BCS bowl games, IIRC. His record was way, way, better than RR's when he was at Notre Dame wrt record, recruiting and draft picks. Yet, where is he now? He's where his genius and acumen is acknowledged, as an offensive coordinator. Everyone here thinks ADs are going to fall over themselves to hire RR, but they undoubtedly will have many moments of pause when they learn just what in the world happened in Ann Arbor that caused all the losses to rivals and the stinkbomb bowl game loss. There's no reason RR, after his job performance in 2008-10, should be given a position any higher than OC as well in 2012.
Unless an AD much smarter than yourself decides "Hey, this guy obviously can coach, he proved it in the past. So I'm going to use the last three years as leverage to get a good deal while emphasizing the hiring of a top-notch defensive coordinator."
Rodriguez's next CFB job will be a HC position. And I will derive great satisfaction from his success at your expense, frequently reminding you of your lunatic claims that he "can't coach".
If you see that Rich Rod leads Clemson to a 10-3 record in 2012, and the first thing you think of is a random message board poster, I feel sorry for you.
Also, I never said he can't coach. He can coach an offense. He can't coach a defense. And I severely question his ability to be a leader in a high-pressure coaching situation (he did great at his alma mater, but did poorly when he left to chase a paycheck in Michigan).
You pretty much did.
But that's okay, I accept your apology.
you're insane if you think RR will be anything other than a heach coach next year. i'm not saying it will be an elite program (it most certainly won't be), but he will definitely be a bcs-conference head coach. god i wish i knew you in real life so i could bet an absurd amount of money on this.
I appreciate folks who aren't afraid to say RR was a total disaster. A TOTAL DISASTER, except for Denard which I suspect was blind luck. I don't hink he's a buffon, I just think he rose to the level of his incompetence. I think he's an OC not a HC except perhaps in the BIG Easy, I mean Big East or ANOTHER minor conference.
Best of luck to you Rich Rod! You're not a fraud or a phony or a cheater. I like you. You are a good man and good coach I'll watch your broadcast for sure. I'm glad we got to know you. I just regret HOW we met.
By the way he is laughing all the way to the bank. Do you think he gets this gig if he just finished his run a WVU? No way. Michigan HC credit got him this gig.
Wow, has that been a problem? Finding people who are willing to say that RR was a TOTAL DISASTER?
And if you think RR's cultivating of Denard was blind luck, then you are both a buffon and a moran.
EDIT: You guys are blowing all my best bits by graying out the annoying comments.
/ fist shaking at new-ish commenting system
Just set your threshold to -1. It's a lot easier than getting that stupid caving to work properly and you don't have to worry about posts flickering in and out of existence.
I just love it when people say RichRod was a TOTAL DISASTER and he didn't do anything right at Michigan. I hope they are correct too, considering the entire team minus Mike Martin consists of guys that were recruited by Rich.
Why would you hope they are correct? Are you not a Michigan fan?
The whole notion that people would root for negative outcomes to "win" internet arguments is beyond my comprehension.
You need to get your sarcasm meter fixed.
I was simply stating that when people say RichRod did nothing positive for this program, its a really great way to tell 99% of the team they suck
Gene Chizik DCed the undefeated Auburn team and was also at Texas when they were ballin', right? Ya, not exactly a buffon. ISU is a wreck.
"You mention Weis. He went to 2 BCS bowl games, IIRC."
ummm... how many BCS games did RR take WVU to?? you seem to be forgetting that RR has more on his coaching resume than just the last 3 years at michigan. clearly no big 10 program is going to be hiring RR, but he will find a home in the big east or acc.
that there is really no benefit to broadcasting games, from a coaching standpoint. I just thought it was a good opportunity to lay out the win / win / win / lose scenario. You don't get that opportunity very often.
He was on CBS sports network during signing day so I'm not surprised. Good luck to him.
I wonder who Dave Ryan is. Name sounds familiar.
RR deserves a relatively low-stress job for a little while. I imagine he'll be great at breaking down Xs and Os for the audience too.
Is it the normal CBS or that CBSSports Network?
CBS Sports Network formerly the CBS College Sports Network. He can have fun calling and breaking down C-USA and Big East crap....
I could listen to Rich Rod talk about football all day in that country twang of his. He did a great job on CBS College Sports during Signing Day coverage. He belongs back in coaching but this is a nice one year gig for him.
That country twang is going to be like nails on a chalkboard. And Lord save us all if he says irregardless on air.
It's called sarcasm. In case you've forgotten or just don't know, his twang and the use of that word were one of the many things people held against him. I personally think he is an intelligent, classy guy, and while I will enjoy seeing him on tv, I really want to see him where he truly belongs; on the sidelines.
RR is too good to not get hired. He knows the game, communicates well, and has a lot of charisma. If he wasn't in the prime age for coaches, I could see him doing this for a long time. The bottom line, though, is that he is essentially still a coach, has at least ten good years left, and has a serious need to prove what he can do with a job where he actually has the full cooperation and resources of an elite program to utilize.
You can bet he will do his homework before he chooses his next job, though. I would guess he has learned three valuable lessons:
1. Don't try to replace an inbred coaching tree without totally cleaning house, including the compliance department and disgruntled ex-coaches. Put the power to do this in your contract before you take the job.
2. Hire a competent DC and delegate the defense to him with no interference.
3. DTA. The person who shakes your hand today may stab you in the back tomorrow.
To even come close to #1. Good luck with that.
Best of luck to Coach Rodriguez.
have gone thru my p-corn stash from just the tSIO ruckus. now need moar. VERY happy RR has a low-stress gig after the CRAP he went thru for US for 3 years (and esp. in that final month).*
AND, will especially be bonus listening to him break down Clemson games -- "gee I wouldn't do that, next year we'll..."
* (not to be interpreted he should have stayed, I was on record months earlier we hand to change.)
Hearing his voice won't be nearly as bad as hearing MIllen's.
...to RR. I wish him the best.
He is a class act and great communicator, and it will be great to listen to him. I wish him nothing but the best. When he does get back into coaching, I am sure many of us will be rooting for him whenever he isn't playing against us.
"Oh, good." But then I read Misopogons post and I don't want to think about RR again for a long, long time. I need my space, RR.
Are they going to hire a third person in the booth to break down defense?
Rich was pretty good at breaking down defenses, theirs and ours.
/In all honesty I wish him the best, I met him and he's a great man, I think this will be a great job for him to have, it'll probably add years back to his life after his last 3 years.
Good luck, Rich!
they don't ask RR to analyze the defensive playing ability of any team at halftime he will be alright.
Good for him. May he enjoy this year and spend some valuable time with his family and land a good coaching gig after that, assuming he still wants to.
Wish him nothing but the best in his future.
Great for RR - he will do an excellent job. As far as advice on him being a coach:
1) Let anyone else run the defense and leave it alone!
2) Don't be stubborn - if something isn't working - just change it up
His style might work on Versus, but it won't work at CBS. They should've hired or promoted from within the CBS announcing tree.
Im really glad to realize that my first reaction to this was truly positive, and so is almost allof what I see here.
He's a great guy, and I feel he did the best he could for us. I look forward to seeing him succeed in his next gig. Im picking Clemson, since they always underachieve with ridiculous recruiting classes. Georgia Tech's option vs RR's spread n shred could make for incredible games.
Glad for him and he deserves this respite. Subsequent Tweets are saying that Barwis is the sideline guy. We get to hear analysis of proprioreception thresholds and sub-optimal glute firing dynamics ! That would be frickn awesome in this man's book !
Good Luck RR but damn I would take a year off and find me a island somewhere....
Edit: I mean that in a good way in as chilax w/ some local beer on a white sand beach.
Glad he's working for CBS sports and working ACC and Big East games. His style of commentary wouldn't work in the Big Ten anyway
I thought CBS just did the SEC.
At least in the past, the ACC used to be part of the regional coverage on ABC.
When he's on, I won't be watching. That bastard has no credibility with me.
Way to be a douchebag. If this is what Michigan Men are made of, I'd rather not have one coaching my team.
He doesn't even deserve a job. In coaching or anything in the football sport area. God I hate him....
Good for him. I hope he enjoys the time off from coaching and gets a good job offer next season.
a young reporter interviewing RR in a (the?) film room while RR was breaking down what they were watching. Was very impressed. He was smart, insightful and so enthusiastic. Showed his love for the game in all its mini as well as mega moments. I think it's a great hire, and great for RR, whether or not he stays there for long. And, FWIT, Yankee (not in the baseball sense) that I am, I love his voice.
Amen to that
Am I the only one who actually watched an interview with this guy? He always seemed super nervous in front of the camera. I wish him the best of luck though.
were only after he learned not to trust the media. Yes, he also looked uncomfortable when CBS used him in the interview with Hoke on signing day, not surprisingly. I think he's going to do just fine with this opportunity.
Great job and all the best to RichRod.
As for 2012, RichRod's look right at you, Dabo Swinney.
and after that we'll watch CBS hit new lows in viewership rating, the program's rising star anchor to quit and move to a new network, and CBS to be investigated by the FCC for having too many producers present on set during dress rehearsals.
deny that NBC and ABC are CBS's main rivals, and say that all the cable channels are just as important.
Rodriguez will be a good coach for Wake Forest or someone like that next season if I had to guess right now. Things could always change.
if that's the choice (Wake) he is left with. I think someplace a little more football - rich (oohhh - sorry about that) is in his future. I can see him at Texas Tech ... a more offensive minded conference.
Go Blue !
I definitely agree that he still deserves to be at a better place; I just couldn't find a major school who will be in need of a head coach. Maybe Clemson or Georgia if they struggle this season? Perhaps a Pac 12 school like UCLA or Washington State. We will have to wait and see.
I think he will go to Clemson in a season or two and win alot of games there. I hope he does well somewhere.
I actually think he is a good public speaker. I think he knows a lot about offense... It's the rest of the game that is so elusive to him!
Wasn't he hired a few months ago?
I do wish him the best, and I am actually quite curious to see him on the air . i do hope he gets another shot as a head coach at a school/conference that accentuates his coaching strenthes. Being fairly new to reading this blog I was also pleasantly surprised by the generally warm reception and well wishes the news received here. GO BLUE!!!
