Rich Rod said he would have won 10 games also

Submitted by UofM Die Hard … on

This is my first forum post so I apologize if this sucks.

I was reading an articile and it was about how Rich Rodriquez was quoted saying he would have won 10 games AT LEAST also.  Now I was one of the supporters of Rich Rod so I was a little sad to see him go, he had a tough situation to deal with.  I do think he needs to refrain from saying some things, its making me lose some respect for him.  Can you just focus on your new job please?

He did give credit to our coaching staff which was nice but what he said came off very childish.

Please read the article and tell me what you think:

is an ass and his tenure here was a failure and there are some within who deserve as much blame but he produced nothing in three years except a whizbang offense who only scored 67 once.  Also he wouldn't have won more than 7 games.  DB was right.

his picks of DCs.  Fat chance RR wins 8 games if he would have been here.  The defense would have still sucked under him b/c of that stupid 3-3-5.   I don't really want to get into it, but RR was a bad fit and it didn't work, OK.

It's OVER! LET IT GO!  Please concentrate on Arizona.  I want to root for you to win, but you're making it very difficult.  Anymore dumb statements like those in the article and I will not be rooting for you to succeed and I'll have to find a new second-favorite team.

why some people still think that on Rich Rod's third shot-in-the-dark on hiring a defensive coordinator, he would have gotten it right. Not to mention, he was the one who insisted on running the "MOTHER F-ING 3-3-5," so many of his problems on the defensive side of the ball were largely his own doing (which is a given I guess, since as head coach you are always responsible for the entire team's performance).

But really, we need to get over this. It's the past. We are in the Sugar Bowl, shouldn't we be focusing more on that?

and his Keystone Cops defensive staff.  8 games tops and 7 more probable.  RR needs to stop being a drama queen and focus on his new job.   Every day I thank the Lord for Brady Hoke and his classy, low key way of dealing with everything that comes his way.

This interview points to two things (1) People will still continue to misinterpret/overreact at RR's honesty and (2) RR didn't learn from his previous PR disasters at Michigan on how to speak to the media.

I know he felt he could have won at least 10 games here, but by admitting that in the interview he's not doing anyone any favors, least of all himself. My reaction to that admission was basically "Um...ok?"

It's a sad world where brutal honesty with the media gets blown out of proportion. But it is what it is...and if RR still hasn't learned that yet then it's better that he's gone.

He could have answered the question better by saying something along the lines of "Well, it's impossible to predict how many wins we would have gotten, but I was fully confident that we were on the right track to contend for the Big Ten title this year. " This way he's not making any weird direct comparisons to what Michigan did this year versus what he thought he could have done.

Because that entire second paragraph was really a classy answer, they he was happy to see that his former players were having success and were happy. That the new coaches have done a good job. But what's everyone focuising on here? The 10-win comment. Sound familiar? Kinda like the"Get a life" thing. Brutal honesty just doesn't work well in the media...you really have to carefully consider any repurcussions and consequences of what you say and how it may be interpreted. I'm disappointed that RR still struggles with this part after all he went through here.

Just to give a bit more of context for those who don't check the link, he said he would've won 10 games at least, and then continued:

That's being confident and a lot of things going the right way, and certainly we had to make a few changes, needed alterations and had to play better defensively.

They've done a terrific job. You've got to give their coaches a lot of credit, but it's just frustrating for me to watch them at times, because those are all my guys. I'm happy for them. To see your kids be happy — I think that's the ultimate goal in life, isn't it? Whether it's the kids in your own family or the kids you recruit and coach. To see them be happy is the greatest thrill as a coach, and to see my kids be happy this year and win some games, it was just terrific. I'd like to have been there and shared that with them, but I think I'm in a great place right now.

I don't really see anything in all that to be indignant about.

Seriously, anyone offended by what he actually said (as opposed to what was either posted or guessed) needs to reconsider.  Admitted he would need better defense and some breaks, and it is being confident, but he is happy for his former players and wishes he could have shared their happiness.  Not much to get upset over there.

If I ran this team I promise all of you we would have won every game. I would have kept the D n shit just like Rich Rod would have. I just know with my increase in spread plays we would have put up the 60+ points a game needed. There is no doubt in my mind we would be playing LSU! We all saw the huge improvement in the team's play over the Rod years. There is no doubt Rich Rod out recruited Llyod Carr. The top 5 rankings Carr got were not as valuable as Rich Rods 25th ranking in recruits. Wake up people! Just ask Rich Rod and he will tell you.

I don't coach should be his new mantra.

RR would have had to hire another new defensive co-ord, 3 in 4 years and his D would likely not have ever stopped ND or OSU and I seriously doubt NW or Nebraska.

Seriously, derpidy, derp, derp.

I'm now in the camp that believe RR didn't get it, never will and is really just a terrible head coach with a great offensive scheme.

"I'd like to think in four or five years we'll have this (Arizona) program where we want it to be and we'll be in the same conversations as the top football programs in the country."

You WOULD like to think that.  Saying stupid sh*t like this just because you think you're supposed to vexes me.  We should have known better when he agreed to screw his alma mater over or better yet when his undefeated team lost at home to Pittsburgh in the last game of the season.

Ready to move on.

and crying?  Both he and the media need to just let this go.  He doesn't coach here anymore and his record when he did coach here sucked ass.  He caught a number of bad breaks, but really, who the fuck cares what he thinks? A large portion of the posters here who still cry themselves to sleep at night because they have convinced themselves that RR was the greatest head coach in the history of the world,  I guess.

I take no issue with what he said. I don't think he was trying to take anything away from the Hoke, he was saying the exact same thing he said when he left: that if we kept him he would win more games! He has been saying that since before he got fired.

for being a bit sour...he never had a chance here from day one. There was a strong faction of LLLLOYdalists who didn't want an outsider. He brought some great talent in, though not quickly enough. I also feel like he didn't surround himself with very solid staff either which ultimately was his downfall, aka the GERG effect...Have to agree, just should have said 'I'm happy those kids I recruited were able to enjoy the fruits of their efforts, I wish the program well and hope to meet them in the Rosebowl next year.'

RR is a good d.c., not coach. His staff sucks balls and his recruiting is average at best.I think he would have won 10 games at Michigan, for evry 20 games played.Glad he is gone.Worst coach here EVER.Let's stop talking about that hillbilly.

I don't blame him for thinking he could have won "at least" ten games.  But at some point he needs to realize he ain't at West Virginia anymore where he was up on a pedastal so high, he could say "I love shit sandwhiches" and the next question would be asking for the recipe.  Outside that kind of relationship/environment, head coaches at major universities need to treat their press conferences and interviews like successful politicians and never take the bait on loaded questions.

Fair or not, people are going to focus on the idiotic statement.  The solution is not, as some would have it here, to rail against people for noticing the idiotic statement, it's to stop making idiotic statements. I asked a friend once, who is editor for a local newspaper, why the press doesn't do more positive news--why they always seem to focus on what went wrong.  He used the analogy of the way we would focus on a car with a flat tire.  We don't pay attention to the fully inflated tires--they are the norm, what is expected.  RR's claim about his winning at least ten games was his flat tire.  All the positive stuff he said is what he should have said. We shouldn't blame people for noticing the flat tire.

For anyone who thinks that the RR loyalists are the delirious weirdos and the RR grave pissers are the rational ones, I respectfully disagree and offer this thread as exhibit A.

Personal message to jmblue: I used to think you were kind of a dick. But you have been so outflanked by some spittle-flecked loonies who ostensibly agree with you that I take that back 100 times over. You are a reasonable, sensible person who contributes to rational discourse on this here blog.

Your D benefitted from playing shitty Big 10 offenses. I will acknowledge the fact it is Better than last years (couldn't of been worse really)but it wasn't. As good as the stats made it look.
