No more than Bo Clan or Lloyd Loyalists are "real" M fans.  Each faction had their point of view and those views each had some level of legitmacy as to what was best for the Michigan football program.  The problem that concerns me is that football fanbases that allow the legacy of a coach grows to demagogue levels, it becomes unhealthy.  It took Alabama a long time to be Alabama again after Bear Bryant died because no coaching successor could ever match up to the fans memory of Bryant.

Michigan is suffering from a mild case of that right now.  Schembechler's legacy still looms too large over this program.  It doomed the Rodriguez regime and while we have a brief respite under Hoke, I think we're vulnerable to falling right back into the morass of infighting until we can get past the notion that Michigan has to be lead by a "Michigan Man".  This doesn't mean forgetting all the good that Bo did for The University and the football program, but we need to leave room in the collective heart of the fanbase for something new if the situation requires it.

The alternative is to relegate ourselves to hoping that the program can carry on via promotion from within, which means Brady better be grooming guys to take over in about 10-12 years.  He may be hugely successful at this, but if we're going to limit our future coaching talent to such a small candidate pool, we're very vulnerable to crashing and burning.

His article points out a number of things that Bacon said that just flat out wasn't accurate. I've probably spoken to Brian more times too, because at MGoBlog events I don't slink in and sneak out like a thief in the night like you do.

So I hoped I saved these people from you annoying them.

I've been to one "MGoBlog event."  It was for the release of HTTV '12, coincidentally.  It was a beautiful summer Saturday, as I recall.  I played golf in the morning, arrived late to the event, said hi to Brian, bought a copy of the guide, looked around and didn't see anybody I knew in the thinning crowd, and left.

I've been to three of John U. Bacon's book signings; one I arranged for an alumni meeting in Bloomfield Hills, and one was in Ann Arbor, where Brian was present with John, and a lot of people asked Brian to co-sign John's book.

None of this matters or ever would have been raised, but for your -- well, I'll just call it curious -- characterization of my  "slink[ing] in and sneak[ing] out like a thief in the night."

How do you come up with this stuff?

ever not shown up in a thread where Richrod is mentioned? I think he gets alerts on his phone whenever the words "Rich" or "Rod" are posted on mgoblog

Do you have any particular mistake, factual error, misjudgment, in mind?

I think that Michael Rosenberg, Mark Snyder and the Free Press will be forever tainted in relation to the Michigan football program.  When you think about how important "sports" and "Michigan Wolverines" are to the business of the Free Press, that's a very good thing in my mind.

I'm not going to get in the whole discussion about RR because it's not worth the aggro. I'm just going to say my piece and never check back to see which clowns posted nasty replies.

For me, I loved RR. I didn't like the hell the program went through for the years he was here but I'm smart enough to  know that wasn't all his doing, so he gets a bit of a pass with me. I was in the camp that immediately after the bowl game I thought he should have been given one more year, but hindisght being what it is I'm extremely happy with where UM is right now.

As a fan I got behind Hoke immediately after his hiring was announced, but I still felt bad for RR and hoped for the best for him. When he got his new gig i couldn't have been happier for him and hope he finds a ton of success in Arizona. I hope he can build something similar to what he had back at WVU. I will root for RR in every game he coaches unless we find ourselves at opposite sides of the field. Good luck to him!
