I'd prefer that we win the game, whether Denard has to take every snap or if he only has to play the 1st quarter.
Rich Rod on QBs Saturday
In other breaking news, 99.99% of the people here would prefer that we win too.
I think you missed the point.
I don't think a coach should ever say "No matter what the score, I'm going to play all three quarterbacks." Because if Michigan is in a dogfight the entire game, I don't want Gardner to take some snaps just because. The game isn't about getting everybody experience - it's about winning.
Hopefully we go up by 30 at halftime and then Gardner and Forcier can get a couple series each, which would make all of this moot.
Could mean 1 or 2 plays in a dogfight for a Denard water sip and 80 yard td.
It is not like he signed a contract with the TV station that all 3 QB's will play or we forfeit all proceeds from the game.....
My guess is he has looked at BGSU's game film and is confident we put up 30points by half-time. It is a message to the team to say, "if you guys screw this up, it is going to make me look bad. DEFEND MY HONOR". something to that effect....
100%. It's a good coaching strategy but could look terrible if it doesn't work (it will work).
Give RR some credit, i do not think he will play Devin if it is close. I do think it will be an easier game then UMASS. So most likely we will see all three QB's.
Stats... the chase for 2,000 yard rushing/passing... Heisman Watch features... "Shoelace" references on Sportscenter...
Sure, I'd love to see a win, too. BUT AT WHAT COST, SIR?!?!?
The Team...The Team...The Team.
How does the team get better? More experience for all, and less injuries. If UM is up by anywhere near 30 at half, Denard probably has a large amount of stats that will keep him in the heisman race and a feature on SportsCenter. I can't imagine that the BGSU will garner too much interest regardless unless it is a close game (which it sure as hell better not be.)
We should go into every game looking for a win. In this instance, I like the notion of a "promise" that all three QB's will play, if it makes BGSU work on more schemes and prepare for more looks.
The interesting thing to me is that we might just find out how improved Tate is, too, behind this 2010 O-line and with the surrounding talent. Denard Robinson might not be Michigan's only extravagantly talented QB.
Where did he say this? I can't imagine it was that definitive. If the score is tied throughout, there is no way that RR pulls the best player on our team off the field. Don't see it.
Well, they better get in the game this week. Otherwise, Rich Rod's going to be a real spot in the 4th quarter against OSU. "Well, I don't want to do this, but I promised to play all three this season. Better take Denard out..."
Why would he have trouble putting Tate and Devin in during the 4th Quarter of the OSU game? It would only make sense to do just that being up 4 touchdowns and Denard having all but wrapped up the Heisman. Right?
Touche, good sir.
As much as I hate to say it the freep
The shame of it all.
I saw this in an article in the freep this morning. However, if I remember correctly I think he was referring to all of te backups, not the the backup QBs.
This is like one of those situations where a parent has to say they love all three of their kids equally, but there's an obvious favorite.
Right now, if it's a close game, the only way Tate sees time is as a punter. Seriously, he's prob the best we've got right now.
Tate is the best punter we have? You're either delusional or purposefully ignorant.
I think he was being sarcastic...
...but still, Tate punted a few times last year and did a pretty damn good job.
I don't recall Tate dropping that ball on any of his punt attempts last year. Even if he only kicks it to the line of scrimage, its better than what we got last Saturday.
based on what we saw during the spring game, Tate is probably the second best punter on the roster... and it may not be close.
Looks like Tate will get some playing time this season, as a punter. Hmm I wonder if he can kick field goals?
Now that would make sense, regardless of the score.
Uh-oh, time for the XP. Tate!
Tate as a punter? Are u kidding me? When does the sarcasm stop?
"You're either delusional or purposefully ignorant."
Have you watched the first 3 games?
Give Hagerup a chance. Also, didn't Denard drop one inside the 5? Although, Tate may be our best kicker.
...followed by Random Parking Lot Guy, Kovacs, Vinopal, Dileo, Martin, Lewan, Campbell, Odoms, MRob's Abs, a strong tailwind, the cotton-pickin' maize and blue soul of Bob Ufer, Sheridan, Navarre, GERG, Angry Michigan Safety Hating God, Tacopants, and Gibbons/Broekhuizen.
In that order.
Nice work there. The mental image of Campbell lining up a FG is priceless. BTW - Aren't Vinopal's legs are too short to kick?
He makes up for it with grit and moxie.
A truly awe-inspiring sight was watching Sam Sword kick field goals for Arthur Hill High School. (He also played wide receiver. So after the QB would thrown him the ball, Sword would cactch it and run it into the end zone, kick the extra point, and then go play defense.).
Not sure Bob Ufer's Soul has any eligibility left.
that Lloyd Christmas/Tom Brady kid in the student section. He's on the six-deep at kicker.
Honestly, Tacopants is not a good kicker.
Even if you were jokingI love the idea of Tate being our short field punter. If we are anywhere on our side of the field, let Hagerup punt, if we are inside the opponents 20, kick a field goal. The based on distance on fourth down between the 20 and 50 we either put in Denard (say if the distance is 3 yards or less) or put in Tate (4 yards or more). Tate has shown he can hit an accurate punt 35 yards. He would also give us a fantastic opportunity to fake it anytime we felt like it and the opponent wouldn't be tipped off by a substitution.
That's pretty much been his mantra all along. He keeps saying he wants to get all three playing time but we've seen how it's gone so far. He knows what he's doing if we aren't up by a couple of Td's he's not going to mess with what's worked so far. Have faith !!!!
Wow, coach has some trick plays drawn up for this week.
A play designed with all three in the game at once? Yeehaw!
that we may see "the" quadruple option play on Saturday?
What if Kennedy gets into the game? Quintuple option?
Transcontinental! Tate to Denard (everyone thinks it's Tay Odoms or Vincent Smith*) and Denard back to Tate.
*I think the ND announceers confused V. Smith and Denard on a fumble recovery, so it'll totally work.
I doubt RR reveals anything from his bag of tricks this week. He will save the tricks for the B10 schedule. I do, however, expect that at some point this season, RR will have a formation with both Tate and Denard in the game.
If the above quote is correct, I cant see how he will play all 3 this week without trick plays. There is no way he thinks we are going to blow them out.
We are undefeated.
Look at him motor down the sideline. He could give Denard a close race.
What can't Woodson do?
Defeat Zoltan in a battle for space domination?
Blue in South Bend - I love that you took my son's quote as your signature. Awesome! My wife and I were cracking up when we saw this.
Your son is wise beyond his years.
fucking ON them in the first half, deal with all this in the second.
I stand by my Tate comment. His rugby punts were great.
this is one thing I've wondered about. We (and others) debuted the rugby punt a couple of years ago, and it seemed like an amazing thing because the odds of getting it to bounce off of one of the opponent's players went up at least 15-20%, and if it didn't you usually still got the roll anyway and reduced chance of a return. Why don't we (or others) still do that more?
If close game, continue to watch Denard rack up numbers.
going to the freep.com
I want Denard to play every down for my amusement.
Obviously if the game is close in the waning moments, RR isn't going to jeopardize a win just to "keep his word". HOWEVA, this might also be a hidden message to the team:
1) Defense, get the job done this week and stuff these jokers.
2) Offense, keep doing what you're doing, sans field goal tries (aka - Endzone or BUST!)
I'm sure that we all feel a bit more comfortable about BGSU than we do about UMass (hindsight), and this game should (hopefully, for the love of God) be a blowout.
Unless it's a trick play, if the game is close in the 4th Denard will be the only one playing.
need backups at the ready
If Drob doesnt play a lot I hope the plays he does have are passing plays so he can stay sharp going into the Big Ten season.
I think now is the time to do it. We need to figure out where we stand if Denard gets hurt or if we get in a jam, and need to put a different style on the field to change things up.
Didn't he say all three were going to play against Connecticut too?
RR said Gardner's redshirt wouldn't be burned on Gardner only getting in for a couple of plays each game. However, through 3 games Gardner has been on the field for a total of 3 plays.
He sure does hand off the ball great though...
I think he ran it once also for -2 yards also. Game experience gotta have it lol
I just want to see Denard throw some quick slants. We very rarely call slants and I don't know why, but they could really be nice to pull people out of the middle and take the edge off the pass rush.
if UM is losing or involved in a tight game, it will be the Denard show.
I bet RR was hoping to get all 3 QB's some time against UMass but unfortunately UM fell behind and then wasn't able to maintain a comfortable cushion. I think RR said after they went up 35-17 that if the defense would have been able to get the UMass offense off the field without scoring, he was going to start doing some substitions.
If we don't see all 3 quarterbacks then it means we still suck royally on defense. I know what Tate can do so I'm not worried if he comes into the game if it's semi-close but Devin doesn't have any extended playing time under his belt and we don't need him coming into a close game and throwing a pick six or something along those lines. Get the game in hand and then give each one a series or two unless we continue to pull away.
...shouldn't make comments like that, IMO. If the game is close throughout and DRob is playing well, DRob should stay on the field.
no other qb will sniff the field if we're down 17-7
I think at some point we have to acknowledge that Devin Gardner has feelings and emotions too. In 2 games so far, he was next up off the bench if Denard couldn't play. That has to build up an expectancy in a young player's mind. He now likely expects to be called 2nd. In all likelihood he has prepared himself mentally as the 2nd string quarterback. And unless he has done something to warrant demotion, you have to give him the call 2nd up or risk hurting the young guy's confidence.
These kids are 18 years old at least. They aren't pieces of glass whose confidence will be shot unless handled with a big "fragile" stamp. Athletes who don't know how to eat humble pie don't get to start in D-1 football.
The utter condescension you show applies to five-year-olds and makes you look incredibly ignorant.
I agree with you, but I think you're being a little bit excessively harsh on El Guapo. You should ease off. Mgoblog posters have feelings and emotions too. You don't want to wreck El Guapo's confidence and have him never post again.
There is, in all likelihood, little real importance to this statement.
You are entitled to your opinion my friend. But no way do I risk tinkering with the confidence of the future franchise quarterback for Michigan. You obviously think nothing of that. That is where we differ.
You are making the questionable assumption that Gardner will even take note of these statements.
Mallet, Threat , Tate, Denard, Devin, who next year?
Denard(all world) is only a soph. Devin is a fresh. So the franchise will have to sit for 3 years to get a shot at the heisman when he is a Senior.
When Forcier comes out, I think we should all give him a huge ovation
I think that would be a classy move. The kid has done a lot for this University. And I think it will happen too.
I think we can do both.... help Devin maintain his confidence and show our appreciation to Tate. I don't think they are mutually exclusive. Hopefully we get up on the opponent enough so that both see plenty of action.
We should definitely give one to the special teams (if we're kicking or receiving doesn't matter to me), and also when the defense comes out for their first series too.
...he's thrown his third pick. That would not be good.
just put all three in the game on the same play, run a trans-trans-continental. promise kept.
