Rich Rod Offense + Bo Defense = Dynasty

Submitted by ToughD on

I read the rumors flying around in regards to Mo coming to help out the defense and I thought, "Hey what if we did bring in someone as a DC who knows a Bo style defense as Mo certainly does?  Add the RR spread and shred and there is no stopping this train!!!!"

Just a thought but I think it's worth something the AD should consider.

... with the RR / (Defensive Coordinator) / Tony Gibson dynamic in place.  Scott Shafer and GERG have both tried to implement a pro-style 4-3, and Gibson won both times.

Why settle for Mo?  If we want a "Bo" defense, let's reanimate Schembechler's corpse!  Talk about intimidation, Tressel will crap his pants when he looks across the field and sees Zombie Bo Schembechler!  Especially when he starts eating the brains of the first opponent to run out of bounds on Michigan's side of the field!

In fact, why not just make ZomBo our head coach?  Forget RichRod, forget Harbaugh, I'm telling you, ZomBo is the answer to all our problems!

Gary Moeller is 7 years removed from his last coaching gig.  I don't think he'd be interested in coming back to coach, if he was he would have thrown his hat in the ring when Shafer was let go.

how insulting would it be for us to let him go, as head coach (and a successful one), after his incident and then turn around and ask him to be our DC?!  Obviously very few, if any, of the people here when that happened are still here, but it was still Michigan that did it.

If we specifically asked/begged him to come back as a DC, I think he might try, just as a favor to Michigan, but I think he would be very transitional.  A couple years to make a defense good (if he still could) enough that someone else can hopefully maintain it and/or train that replacement and he'd be gone.  Obviously that would be a very good thing for us, assuming that he could still build a defense and someone else could maintain things acceptably.  But I don't think we'd ask him and I'm not sold that he could be effective anyways.

Personally, I think RichRod is going to let Magee take almost complete control of the offensive for a week or two and concentrate solely on defense.  I also think there's going to be less GERG motivating on the field and more RR doing it or letting/making Barwis do it.  GERG will probably still do most of the playcalling, but I'd say that's about it.  I also think that RR is asking DB how much money he can give to a new DC and is constructing a list of really, really good, proven DCs that he can hopefully buy over here.  I think this, because I think that RR is most likely holding onto his job this year and will be coaching for his job next year.

who hasn't coached at all for the better part of a decade and has been away from the college ranks for fifteen years was going to be hired by RR to be defensive coordinator?

That's some world-class gullibility on display there. Impressive.

Ok...Denard is a serious stud and our offense gains a lot of yards, but if it were so damned good, how come we were outscored each of the last three weeks?  We scored 17, 28 and 31 points in each of the last three games.  Against two of the better teams in the B10, we averaged 22.5 points a game.  PSU and IN both had crappy D's.

How much of the offense is RR and how much is Denard?  Put Denard in any half decent O and he will put up huge numbers. Rodriguez had Pat White and Denard Robinson. - yeah, RR's schemes fit them well...but are we giving too much credit to the coach and not enough to the superb athletes who play for him.

We have the 2nd ranked offense in the nation and we are half way through the B10 season. We are pretty overrated I guess. Oh yeah, and we bring back 10 of 11 starters next year.

Also, I did hear that RichRod lucked into Denard Robinson and Pat White. Also, RichRod doesn't get any credit for Denard turning the corner this year. Denard did it all by himself.

2nd ranked - in what category and we are talking this year.  Let's worry about next year, next year. At some point, you realize that next year's talk is great in blogs, but you have to perform now.  Yeah, Dee Hart is going to change life immensely as we know it.  I hope that happens, but if  the William Campbell experience should have taught you anything, don't count your chickens...  No one said that RichRod isn't a solid O coordinator.  What I said is that our offense, against superior talent, is throwing up yards, but obviously not enough points.

Why is it so hard for you to conceptualize that if our offense was so freaking good, we wouldn't have lost three games in a row.  Against good defenses, we have been very average in the only category that counts, points,  unless you think 22.5 points a game against Iowa and Michigan State were stellar point totals.  How about the turnovers those two games....did you happen to notice any?  Believe what you will, but our B10 record is now 1-3.

And yeah, I do believe there was luck in Denard's being the top rusher in the country.  You give RichRod too much credit on that one.  Indeed, he has a scheme that suits Denard's skill set very well, but much of Denard's success is Denard himself and his God given gifts. His instant acceleration, cuts and top speed are not taught, they are gifts.  You know exactly what I mean.  Do you really believe that if he were in another good offense he wouldn't rack up tons of yards?

The starting lineup will look like this.

NT Rob Renes

LDE Josh Williams

RDE Glen Steele

SLB Clint Copenhaver / James Hall

MLB Dhani Jones

WLB Sam Sword

LCB Charles Woodson

Spur Marcus Ray

FS DeWayne Patmon

Bandit Tommy Hendricks

RCB Andre Weathers

Our run defense would have stayed at the same level as Ray and Hendricks were great run stoppers.  However, we would have had some issues with the pass rush as Copenhaver / Hall would have been coverage guys, and Steele and Williams would both had to play two gap roles.  Renes may have been too small for the nose as well, but his instincts would have covered that up.

This defense, as a 3-3-5, probably would not have been as dominant, but they would still lead the Big 10.
