Rich Rod on Illinois game last year and wanting to coach
here is an article from Rich Rod about the crazy illinois game last year and his desire to coach again.

I can't wait to see him on the sidelines again. College football is a lot more interesting with him in it.
November 11th, 2011 at 1:47 PM ^
I like RR, but every thread do we have to say "zomg, he's number one in my heart!!1!!!"
Just seems kind of overplayed now.
November 11th, 2011 at 1:49 PM ^
Yea, wishing people well is so overplayed, man...
November 11th, 2011 at 1:51 PM ^
Especially those who gave their heart and soul to about 90% of the current team we cheer every Saturday.
November 11th, 2011 at 1:53 PM ^
Yea, fuck the only guy who saw Denard as a QB and brought him here. That asshole.
November 11th, 2011 at 1:58 PM ^
Overplayed indeed...
November 11th, 2011 at 2:04 PM ^
We had to agree with everything the dude says. My bad, I'll step away from the blog.
November 11th, 2011 at 2:07 PM ^
You must be new here. That was your most inaccurate comment yet.
November 11th, 2011 at 2:12 PM ^
That one made me laugh. But give yourself some credit! I believed in you all along and look at you now . . . you're back!
November 11th, 2011 at 2:19 PM ^
You get me <3
November 11th, 2011 at 2:12 PM ^
You are pretty new around here. This is a pretty pro RR blog and one that does not take kindly to insulting his work and effort. The best approach I can offer you is talk about the current team if you didn't like RR, and steer away from posts about this topic. This has played out 2398521798 times on this blog and every angle has been covered, extensively.
November 11th, 2011 at 2:21 PM ^
I'm not new, I've been reading since before RR was hired. My comment was sarcastic about the dude. I know about his "e-rep". If anyone actually read my post, the first sentence said "I LIKED RR". Explain how I insult his work and effort. I used the word debacle. Maybe that got everyone's panties in a bunch. Debacle meaning, failure on all parts, which I mentioned in another post.
It just shows how quick people are to jump down someones throat for a dissenting opinion.
November 11th, 2011 at 2:32 PM ^
The issue is not that you expressed dissent. Rather, you used (and continue to use) the sort of uncreative adjectives that constitute flamebait. Have you ever read A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again? Err, maybe you just need a lesson on indicating contrast.
November 11th, 2011 at 1:55 PM ^
Nothing wrong with wishing someone well, but in every thread about RR, lots of the posts are stuff like, "where he goes, that will be my second favorite team!". I think it's just kind of weird.
November 11th, 2011 at 1:59 PM ^
Yea, I got that from your first post. It was equally stupid.
November 11th, 2011 at 2:13 PM ^
(1) His post was kind of pointless
(2) You are an asshole. When I think of an old man screaming "Get off my lawn" from this point forward, I will think of His Dudeness, arbiter of all that is righteous and true about MGoBlog.
November 11th, 2011 at 2:18 PM ^
I take that as a compliment, but I am actually quite young.
And I have a very VERY boring job.
November 11th, 2011 at 2:01 PM ^
Why? There is obviously a portion of the fanbase that didn't like him before he stepped on campus, but there are also a lot of people who believed (and still believe) in him and his abilities. And because of that, they will watch him wherever he goes. It's the same thing as being a fan of a UM player in the NFL. You like him and you hope he does well, no matter which team he plays for. RR is a part of the UM family.
November 11th, 2011 at 2:06 PM ^
It just seems to be overcompensating, IMO. Yeah, some people didn't like him, but that doesn't mean we need to make up for them.
November 11th, 2011 at 2:29 PM ^
November 11th, 2011 at 2:39 PM ^
Eureka! That's it!!!! I don't like michigan football, I thought RR was gimmicky and who the hell were Lloyd and Bo?
November 11th, 2011 at 4:02 PM ^
You just compared liking Rich Rod, one of the (statistically) worst coaches we've ever had in Michigan history, a guy who ended the bowl streak and gave us 2 loosing years and was 6-18 in the BIG, with liking Bo and Lloyd? No wonder your name is Big Blue, you don't know too much about Michigan Football.
November 11th, 2011 at 4:21 PM ^
November 11th, 2011 at 4:49 PM ^
Easy...this whole thread has become total bullshit, but I'm pretty sure that the numbers on the helmets have exactly everything to do with the kids thinking they're cool and exactly nothing to do with Bump Elliot or his record. I get it. you like RR. Stop letting your detractor turn the board into Sparty debating the merits of Muddy Waters (not the blues legend) vs. Daryl Rogers.
November 11th, 2011 at 5:37 PM ^
November 11th, 2011 at 5:59 PM ^
Look at every thread about RR. People will either kiss his feet or say they hated him. Most of this blog are RR fans...where have you been?
Yes, this "one guy" is suspicious why people would say they "like" RR. If you can't see the difference between expressing like and overcompensating, I'm sorry.
Furthermore, please tell me how anyone "shit on RR" in this thread.
November 11th, 2011 at 7:40 PM ^
After 1 post saying they wish RichRod luck, you said we shouldn't do that because it is overplayed. That suggests people shouldn't support our ex-coach. Then, when I compared RichRod to all of our other ex-coaches because, you know, he coached here, it was suggested that we should only support ex-coaches who did well. That means, because of the last 3 years, we should only chear Michigan when they are doing well and we shouldn't like any individual who doesn't perform well.
November 11th, 2011 at 6:00 PM ^
Not sure why we are even talking Bump Elliot, but at least he had a WINNING record at Michigan, and won a Rose Bowl. You were comparing Rich Rod to Lloyd and Bo. A better comparison would be Rich Rod to Matt Millen.
November 11th, 2011 at 7:44 PM ^
So only support people at Michigan who have winning records. Did you know Yost had a losing season? I guess we probably shouldn't have been a fan of his that year
November 11th, 2011 at 2:06 PM ^
"There is obviously a portion of the fanbase that didn't like him before he stepped on campus, but there are also a lot of people who believed (and still believe) in him and his abilities."
Just so we're clear, there are only two types of people, those that didn't give him a chance and hated him before he got here, and those that believed in him? There weren't any people that believed in him and supported him until they realized he wasn't the man for the job?
November 11th, 2011 at 2:14 PM ^
That is obviously not what he said.
November 11th, 2011 at 2:20 PM ^
I didn't say those were the only two types of people. And I wouldn't say that anybody realized that he wasn't the right man for the job; believed would be a better word choice, since to say that someone realized he wasn't the right man for the job would be to imply that he was not, as a matter of fact, the right man for the job. I still believe that he was the right man for the job, and I know I'm not the only one who thinks so, but to debate this is futile.
Rodriguez is gone, many people will always wonder what could have been, but it just irks me when people state as fact that "RR wasn't the right man for the job," "the spread will never work in the Big Ten," "RR was a terrible coach," etc. They're inflammatory jabs at a member of the Michigan family, and are largely made without facts.
November 11th, 2011 at 2:08 PM ^
the hatred i feel for just about every non michigan football team, i think the better way to say it would be "where he goes, that will be my least unfavorite team."
November 11th, 2011 at 1:54 PM ^
I haven't described him as "dreamy" or "ruggedly handsome" in several weeks.
November 11th, 2011 at 1:45 PM ^
Sorry Rich, too bad you couldn't get the job done. That our team is where he'd thought they'd be is a joke. How does he think our scoring defense would be #6 in the country?
November 11th, 2011 at 1:51 PM ^
I also think its a little bit lame for him to be like "Of course they're doing great. If I was still the coach we'd be doing just as well.". But at the same time, what is he supposed to say? "If I were the coach we would be sucking, good thing for them I got canned."
I think you have to cut him a little slack b/c of the awkwardness of those types of questions in general. There really isn't a good way for him to answer.
November 11th, 2011 at 1:56 PM ^
I agree - there is no good way for Rodriguez to answer those questions. It must be tough for him to even watch Michigan play . . . He has (or at least had) a very close relationship with many of the current players and has a special place for them in his heart but, on the other hand, probably feels very burned by the way he was treated generally. So he's torn inside. Then he gets the question and he's all like "I knew they would be good" because he loves the kids and then he's all like "they would be better in my offense" because he's still frustrated.
Stepping into his shoes, its easier to understand the human side of it all. I think sometimes people that dislike him forget that he's just a dude.
November 11th, 2011 at 2:39 PM ^
I think this is a great point. He has been faced with this situation several times this year, and I think we are watching him evolve a bit from the PR/Media-relaitons side of the business as well (as evidenced by his explicit answers, and the overall tone of the piece).
November 11th, 2011 at 2:49 PM ^
Rich Rod likes him some Ole Miss
Freep article has Rich Rod saying he's interested in Mississippi:
“Ole Miss seems to me like it’s always been a special place,” Rodriguez said. “… I’d certainly be interested in talking to Ole Miss.
The Memphis Commercial Appeal states would a good fit he'd be for the Mississippi job.
commercialappeal.com/news/2011/nov/08/ole-miss-list-should-start-with-leach-rodriguez/
November 11th, 2011 at 1:58 PM ^
It would be lame if this was the first time he had said that, after UM is already 7-2. But he's been saying that since before the season began.
November 11th, 2011 at 2:02 PM ^
I actually think that is just as lame. A guy just gets fired and is talking about how great they would be next year if he hadn't been fired.
Again, I don't blame him b/c I understand he has to answer these questions some how, I'm just saying.
November 11th, 2011 at 2:31 PM ^
I mean, he could keep quite and NOT talk to the "Illni Quarterback Club", because they have nothing to do with his new job or the game he's covering. But he's going to get the questions along the line.
And he can't really answer question with answers like-
Michigan, defensively, they've got all the kids back and they're healthier.
...and they got a better GREG and got rid of all my clueless assistants who I might be trying to hire back in that job I'm looking for in 2012." I mean the passive-aggressive ignoring of factors is annoying, but this isn't a guy who's retiring and ready to write his memoirs (though Bacon kinda already did that for him), but someone who trying to paint the best picture as a hirable candidate. Can't fault him for that.
November 11th, 2011 at 2:43 PM ^
Whether you believe it or not, I'd bet anything I owned ten times over that RR does, and had said that to MSC, Brandon and anyone else who would listen before he lost his job.
I highly doubt the first time he said any of this was from the comfort of a broadcast booth.
November 12th, 2011 at 12:36 AM ^
It always helps if you can pay your Defensive Coordinator more than the BCS average for DC's. One thing Brandon did right is hire a HC without breaking the bank and open the wallet for quality Coordinators. RR didn't have a chance to bring in a non-GERG at the salary he was able to offer.
November 11th, 2011 at 2:39 PM ^
saw some good signs in the Gator Bowl
November 11th, 2011 at 3:17 PM ^
Sorry Rich, too bad you couldn't get the job done. That our team is where he'd thought they'd be is a joke. How does he think our scoring defense would be #6 in the country?
Rodriguez is probably thinking that he'd have gotten a new DC, with a budget that was something better than the middle of the pack in the Big Ten. Just like what happened with Brady Hoke. And the reason that Rodriguez probably thought so, was because he probably had several very serious conversations with Dave Brandon, that led to this remarkable public concession by Brandon:
“We [Michigan] have traditionally kind of been in the middle of the pack [in terms of compensation for assistant football coaches, particularly coordinators],” he said. “That’s kind of been our tradition, and I don’t necessarily believe that that’s been appropriate.”
Rodriguez having predicted where this team would be is no joke. It is where Rodriguez and his staff predicted this team would be, two years ago.
November 11th, 2011 at 4:29 PM ^
...since February.
http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2011/02/ap_interview_rich_rod…
Rich Rodriguez was convinced the worst was behind him at Michigan, that better days were coming..."Exponentially" better, as he put it. "We saw the light at the end of the tunnel."
I'll agree with others that he answers this about as well as he can and there is no perfect way to answer it. He is now a CFB commentator; it is literally his job to talk about college football.
All that said, I hope he is right and at the end of this season we are 10-2 or 9-3. If we only win zero or one of these next three games (esp. if we lose to a depleted OSU at home), this season will not be much better at all.
November 12th, 2011 at 1:54 PM ^
The offense saw the light, what about that defense?
November 11th, 2011 at 1:46 PM ^
If PSU can come back from this and be a national recruiting power again I would love to see RR there. I hope he ends up at a major program so he can go all Urban Meyer on everyone. He deserves that chance.
I'm on page 287 of Three and Out.
