Respect more? MSU or OSU?

Submitted by Mr. Maize on

With the forum topic dealing with the State player accusing Michigan of not respecting them, it got me thinking. Obviously the Buckeyes are our #1 rival. I'd argue that State is 3rd behind Notre Dame (but that's probably pure arrogance talking). My question to you all is, who do you respect more, Ohio State or Little Brother? Ohio State is my #1 most hated rival without question, but I respect them a hell of a lot more than I respect Michigan State. Today's article in the News should illustrate why.

I respect OSU as an institution (loosely), but hate their teams with a fervor.

I have some respect for MSU as an institution, and for the most part couldn't care less about their teams.

OSU's fanbase is a little more obnoxious, so I guess I'd have to give MSU the nod in terms of overall respect, plus some of my relatives went there. Also...it's not in Ohio.

If you grew up in Michigan you likely have WAY more friends who went to MSU than OSU. The Sparties are annoying during game week but for the most part they are good people. The Bucks are obnoxious 24/7/365.

I may not respect every rival coach, player or fan equally, but I respect every team and program equally. Just as Michigan is bigger than any one person, the same goes for the opponents. Doesn't matter if it's OSU, MSU, ND or Delaware St. Lose respect for a team, and we end up with The Horror, ime. So OSU and MSU get equal respect. Kurt Coleman and Dantonio? Not so much.

I respect Notre Dame the most (although not their fans). I respect Ohio State - easily one of the greatest football programs in America. We make OSU better, and they make us better as well.

I hold absolutely no respect for MSU. I just don't. I actually find it demeaning that this is even considered a rivalry, lol. PSU is more worthy (again, not counting the fans such as the BWI crazies, of course).

That one's not even close. Had neither ever coached at their current school I would be extremely excited to have JT as our head coach. dantonio on the other hand would make me hang my head in shame. The man is simply classless.

I dont mind rooting for a team that loses occasionally (or even often) but I can't bring myself to root for a team led by a guy like dantonio.

in terms of football its OSU and its not close, they're too good not to respect

in terms of basketball, its both

in terms of acedemics, its both with the slight nod to state

in terms of fanbase, i respect neither ...state fans have an endless inferioty complex and osu fans r just plain awful to deal with ... so i guess the edge goes to state for being better people

the OSU team and program way more than MSU. Not just in terms of quality of player / coach on the field, but also in terms of quality of character off it. Other than Mo C and David Boston (and of course Boren), I can't really think of many OSU players that I hate for reasons other than continually beating us in recent years. They seem to be a decent group of guys (for the most part).

MSU and OSU fans are equally annoying to me.

For me, MSU is ahead of Notre Dame on the rivalry rung, if only because this past year has taught me how much crap I have to deal with if MSU has a whiff of success.

And it's not even close. Having gone to UM and partied at both MSU/OSU, it's not even a debate about which student population I respect more. Sure, sure, I respect OSU's success more than Sparty, but if I consider the whole picture, I find it hard to respect the OSU fan base, student body, etc. Anecdotal, sure, but that's what I go on.

You have to be a winning program to be respected. As much as I hate Ohio State I respect them because they are a winning team. MSU isn't a winning program so I really don't have a whole lot of respect for them. Plus they hate us way more than we hate them, ask any state fan if they beat us its there season, if we win it was expect so we just move on to the next game.

I respect OSU as a football program.

I respect the sweater over St. Dantonio because he acts like he's been there and St. Dantonio is busy getting a 15 yard excessive celebration penalty dancing in the endzone.

I have a great deal of respect for Tom Izzo.

OSU fans are the scum of the earth for the most part - Skol dipping, Pabst drinkin', truck drivin' idiots.

MSU overall is fine and for the most part their fans are fine, but for Football it's OSU that gets the respect.

I have a little more respect for OSU (which isn't saying much)...

IME, MSU can be compared to MGoPosters who always say stupid shit thus getting negged, then complain about getting negged and get negged even more.

this question is about THE rivalry and THE Game. Its Ohio State, hands down. I respect the rivalry between two of the best college football programs of all time. Michigan State is not even in the conversation. The rest of it is just ink in fish wrap...

I can't imagine anybody doesn't respect osu more than msu when it comes to playing on the football field. It's obvious. MSU doesn't win anything...OSU wins big 10 titles. When was the last big10 title for msu?... Based soley on football...i would have msu below osu, psu, nd, iowa most seasons and wisconsin. MSU always talks a big game early in the season, then they fold as they do every season. You can't respect a football team that can't win a big game and folds year after year.

way. I can walk around Lansing anytime of the year with my Michigan sweatshirt on and not get one 'look', one 'awkward glance' or bad word tossed my way.

I cannot do that on any day in Columbus, Ohio.

OSU without a doubt. When Bo died I got morbidly curious about what our rivals had to say about that. The reactions of the two fanbases more or less permanently flip-flopped their reputations in my mind.

And between the coaches there's no comparison. Tressel could talk all the shit in the world and doesn't. (I hate him because he gives us nothing to hate, the sneaky ol' bastard.) Dantonio has nothing to talk shit about and talks it all the time.

Ohio state for football and academics. MSU by far has the most overrated research program in the conference. The quality programs at MSU are few (education, turf science, nuclear physics, astronomy, and vet program). Ohio State has a very strong research program in biochemistry, high energy physics, developmental biology, mathematics, pharmacology, and psychology.

I only respect MSU for men's and women's basketball.

I used to respect MSU for ice hockey until they hired Comley. The program is in a death spiral with Comley at the helm. Recruiting has dropped off like a rock and thuggery has increased exponentially.

The quality programs at MSU are few (education, turf science, nuclear physics, astronomy, and vet program).

Both of MSU's medical schools are very respected at turning out good Primary Care doctors.

Michigan is well respected for both Primary Care doctors as well as world class in Research, but MSU does do Primary Care right.

Ohio State does almost as well as Michigan at Primary Care, and does okay at Research, so I would give the nod to Ohio State over MSU. Neither is as good as Michigan, but for medicine both are pretty good.

In Law, Michigan is a top ten. Ohio State is top 50. MSU is unranked but does a nice job turning out good lawyers. OSU wins that match-up.

is my call. I guess I'm looking at this purely in football terms, so it's OSU by way of tradition and overall success. All sparty can do is say "buh...buh...but we BEAT you LAST YEAR!!". And even so, you only hear that once every few years.

I have to agree with many and pick OSU. I assume the subject
is just football. Tressel has had our number pretty much since he was hired, he doesn't gloat and he always brings a good team
to face UM. I must add that the fanbase for oSU are a bunch of pr!cks, and I'd be leary to see a game in Cbus, I wouldn't have
a problem seeing a game in E. Lansing.

No question. Many UM fans, myself included, are simply condescending to MSU, while saving most of their bile, energy, and hatred for the evil Scarlet and Gray. UM is 67-28 against Sparty; they are "only" 57-42-6 OSU.

Simple math dictates that one must respect OSU more than MSU. Hatred is optional.

I respect OSU's program way more.

I used to respect MSU's fans more, until they had to put up billboards for 1 victory.

Plus their coach lost all respect by insulting a player. Even if it hadn't been our player I'd lose respect for him. Coaches should be above that.
