Ohio is a heart attack recipe. No way this happens.
November 17th, 2011 at 11:29 PM ^
Don't see how he would do that when no one knows the serevity of sactions?
November 17th, 2011 at 11:33 PM ^
Yeah, it would be nice to beat OSU when their good, but Meyer is a VERY good coach. I want OSU to get smashed with sanctions, and to be stuck with Luke Fickell for the next couple years as their coach. I want OSU to lose every game, and I want Michigan to win the game by a lopsided margin for a couple years before that progam begins any kind of turn around.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:47 AM ^
I think people want Urban here because we have a good record against his teams. Not sure the record, but I know we beat his Florida team that had previous National Champion and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow at the helm.
There is probably some other stuff, maybe regarding the system he runs, or that he would probably not recruit Ohio as much as players from areas like Florida fit his systems better, but I honestly don't see him taking the job. He had a great gig at Florida and left because the stress gave him 2 near heart attacks I think. OSU isn't going to be a stress free situation, especially if he comes in before/during the hammer falls down on NCAA and he has to deal with sanctions.
As such I will wait until something is in writing. Besides this came out last week when asked about him returning to coaching:
Urban Meyer general statement: "I am very happy with my role at ESPN. I have no plans to return to coaching at this time."I am very happy with my role at ESPN. I have no plans to return to coaching at this time."
Source of that quote: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/campusrivalry/post/2011/11/espn-urban-meyer-statement-penn-state-/1
Granted that is in regards to the PSU situation, but I think he is truly happy at ESPN where it is a relatively stress free job and he still gets to cover/discuss college football on a weekly basis.
November 17th, 2011 at 11:35 PM ^
Say this gets confirmed... I don't think it's the home run the Buckeyes think it is. Meyer results dropped off dramatically when he tried to cut back. Can he be successful going less than 100%? And if he does go all out how long can he keep it up? Can recruits be confident he'll be there 4 or 5 years down the road?

Michigan had a year to pick a coach in 2008 and flails around and flails around passing on a former alum and national championship winner to pick the worst possible fit in RIch Rod ensuring 3-5 years of misery while OSU goes through one of the most embarassing sagas in recent memory and cherry picks the best coach in college football over the last decade. OSU will skate any serious NCAA penalties and just keep right on rolling over the rest of the Big 10.
Some things in life truly are not fair...
Oh and to those with the all the fake bravado because we beat Florida in a couple of meaningless bowl games- give me a break....
November 17th, 2011 at 11:53 PM ^
How about you acquire a set of these?
November 18th, 2011 at 12:15 AM ^
93grad's comment is why negbangs should be brought back. There is no such thing as a meaningless bowl game when Michigan is playing in it, ESPECIALLY when it was against a top-tier SEC team with quarterbacked by a Heisman winner.

If you think going 9-4 and winning the frickin Outback bowl is so great maybe you should be a fan of Sparty or Tennessee.

I have watched enough coaching searches to realize that these rumors are nearly always bull shit.

I see what you did there...

Eh, i am 100 percent sure our Co Head Coaches Les Miles and Jim Harbaugh arent concerned by this development
November 17th, 2011 at 11:48 PM ^
Will coach here before it's all said and done, just after hoke retires!!! In 10-15 years
November 17th, 2011 at 11:53 PM ^
Hey look, Mrs. Miles looking at property in Saline!
Rumor already had the invocation of FlightAware yesterday afternoon, a blog running with a cryptic "99.X% sure" statement tonight, what's next?
November 17th, 2011 at 11:54 PM ^
HAHA. Remember the RichRod experiment? It didn't work. Neither will Urban Meyer
November 18th, 2011 at 12:01 AM ^
Of all the coaches OSU could have hired, they hire the one OUR defensive coordinator knows the best. Hoke really has changed the tide in this rivalry.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:12 AM ^
I like this perspective...I like it a lot.

Well look on the bright side, at least the Buckeyes won't try to use the idiotic excuse anymore that they shouldn't get punished because losing a coach is punishment enough.
Holy shit are they ever going to skate. Talk about being charmed. Their coach gets fired because of a cheating scandal at probably the only time that the best possible candidate is actually available.
Imagine if Harbaugh won two national championshps, then retired for one year, and our coach got caught cheating that same year, and Harbaugh wanted to get back into coaching.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:04 AM ^
All honestly this may be true but i doubt it.
1) why would Meyer strike a deal now??
There are no sanctions yet, and his father just died a week ago (rip). You'd assume he's got family issues and wouldn't give a shit about osu now.
2) this is beginning to sound like us and les, osu boards also believe they got bob stoops, will find out in a month.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:05 AM ^
My ideal series of events: 1. These rumors blow up big time in the next two weeks causing Fickell's support and the support of the team to crumble (if he has any to begin with)
2. Resulting disgruntled team plays like a bunch of girls in The Game
3. Sanctions come down hard on OSU the week after UofM game, bowl ban included
4. Meyer squashes rumors of coming to OSU
5. OSU fires everyone
6. Brionte Dunn burns his OSU gear and commits to the good guys
Really any 2 of these will make me happy

i can see d'antonio bailing ship to OSU and really pissing sparty off
Gary Patterson
Schiano
Golden
Peterson
those are the names i can see them going after.
I guess Fickell would be unemployed after this, sucks for him !
November 18th, 2011 at 12:08 AM ^
Gruden, Patterson, Peterson, Schiano, and Meyer seem to come up in every head coaching search regardless of context.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:05 AM ^
I really hope this doesnt happen.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:06 AM ^
Apparently Urban Meyer talked to Arizona about coaching there and said no. I would say that if he considered coaching at Arizona, there's little reason to think he won't be coaching somewhere next year. I'm not sure if you can get a good read on a guy who goes into retirement from coaching at 46 from a school at which he's won 2 national championships in order to spend more time with his family, but I have to say it seems likely he'll end up at Ohio State.
But those gimmicky spread offensse won't work against Big Ten defenses, right?
November 18th, 2011 at 12:12 AM ^
Talking to Arizona doesn't necessary imply interest--it could just mean he answered his phone.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:15 AM ^

He met with the AD for Arizona in Miami last week.

in Mark Dantonio crossing the border and going back to where he came from.
I think this is the most likely scenario.
On the bright side Sparty and Ohio will both remain NC virgins under Dantonio.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:11 AM ^
Sorry, but I won't believe it until I see it. With the numerous violations over the summer and continuing violations he isn't going to sign on until he sees what the NCAA does.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:13 AM ^
If it happens his spread will work, they did in the sec why not big ten!!
November 18th, 2011 at 12:16 AM ^
Worked well there last year, didn't it?
Look at his track record, he did great at Bowling Green and Utah, staying there for two seasons each. Was at Florida a bit longer. Both BG and Utah struggled for a few years after he left - is he just a guy who can install and offense but can't recruit the pieces for the long run?
November 18th, 2011 at 12:39 AM ^
Wait, doesn't that mean that Urban Meyer is a really good coach? As soon as he arrives, things get a lot better. As soon as he leaves, people struggle. Doesn't this mean that having him as a coach creates a whole lot of value for the program?
November 18th, 2011 at 7:55 AM ^
Looking for reasons why Meyer is not that good of a coach is grasping at straws. So I'll grasp away. You could argue that those two seasons are a small sample size, and riding good QBs before that left. Also, he was not nearly as impressive at UF without Tebow.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:06 AM ^
Some people around here used that argument why Hoke was a bad hire and he wasn't a good coach....
Because after he raised bad programs up they went back to sucking after he left.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:57 PM ^
"they" also used the fact that those programs, steeped in years of futility, weren't overnight successes as a reason why he wasn't good.
November 18th, 2011 at 1:50 AM ^
just ju-jitsu'ed yourself there, friend.
[Meyer takes bad programs and turns them into powerhouses, and then as soon as he leaves things fall apart! Bad coach!]
November 18th, 2011 at 12:18 AM ^
It was a Rich Rod joke about all of the people who said that the spread wouldn't work against Big Ten Defenses. Probably only worked in the SEC because they had the esssseeeeesseeeeeee speed.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:14 AM ^
Are people really still convinced that OSU is going to get hammered? I just have the feeling now after all of their attempts to hinder the NCAA that they are going to get something like a doubling of the current 5 scholarships to 10 over 3 years( basically operating at 82 scholarships for 3 seasons) and no bowl ban. Wouldn't be enough to keep a big name coach away.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:26 AM ^
They almost certainly won't even get that. NCAA will accept their joke of a self-imposed penalty and send a message to the college football world that cheating more than pays.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:58 AM ^
I wonder if Jim Tressel got that message.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:09 PM ^
The NCAA dropped the Failure to Monitor charge about a week ago... I am sure they are preparing to get fisted because of that. The issue with OSU was that, unlike USC, they missed getting tagged originally with the Failure to Monitor. That is now slapped up on them. I expect more to come.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:29 AM ^
Anyone can do this shit.
Oh, and I just read that Peyton Manning was going to interview for the Ohio State job if his health doesn't improve .. I swear, I read it from someone on twitter who said he wasn't lying.
