Report: Lions keep Cunningham
Former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham reportedly is remaining with the team in a new role.
Cunningham, who had been the defensive coordinator the past five seasons, will be a senior assistant with the team focused on personnel according to a report in the Detroit Free Press.
Besides Cunningham, linebackers coach Bill Sheridan and defensive backs coach Alan Williams have coordinator experience.

is a way of deflecting tears. To stop it, the Lions simply need to become relevant--I'd say again, but does 60 years count.

Because it's the only bowl those teams are going to?

Ok, that's not too bad. I was worried they were actually going to have him coach or call plays. But this role it doesn't sound like he affect the team much on gameday.

When you've done what he has for a franchise, you don't just get tossed to the curb.

Glad he's not coaching, since I always thought this guy managed to unfairly avoid a lot of criticism this season. While everyone was focused on our offense and all the turnovers, the defense consistently underperformed with the talent they had during each of the last three seasons.

The d line and linebackers always seemed to improve although our secondary was awful on all levels.

Strangely enough, Cunningham has always been one of those coaches who has been intrigued by analytics and statistical analysis as it pertains to football, so it will be interesting to see what, if anything, he brings in this new role. I must admit that I would not mind having someone who was using the numbers to drive directed improvement on staff - the Lions might be a prime example of a team that would benefit from such a thing.

were strong. Suh, Fairley, Ziggy, Willie Young, Levy, Slay and Delmas. He has pretty good eyes for defensive talents. If Gunther can help out on identifying defensive prospects for the Lions from the draft, I'm fine with it.

Anyone else notice Nick Sheridan's dad, Bill, is our linebackers coach? Was this not brought up on the board?
