A repeat? Florida drops down to #2 if UT loses?

Submitted by TheIcon34 on

I think 6 years ago, Oklahoma lost to Kansas St in the Big 12 championship game, but Oklahoma was able to play for the national championship.

I'm thinking if Texas loses tonight, will Florida drop down to #2?

I would love to see TCU or even Cinci play Bama.

We all know that won't happen because Little Timmy is like Jesus, so he dies tonight, only to arise a month later and play Bama for the national championship..just like Easter.

It's a miracle the final score was not 16 - 33, just as written on Tebow's eyeblack.

Think about this, how far will Florida drop in the polls if Texas loses?

but boise beat oregon. tcu still only has clemson and byu. neither of which are top 10 teams about to play in the rose bowl.

i know the argument against boise, but i dont think tcu's schedule is *that* much stronger to completely rule out boise. just my opinion though.

also, like ive said boise's had a helluva run. i know past years dont count, but its not like this team hasnt been a proven winner before.

Florida had a weak schedule and now people can really see how overrated they are after they played the real #1 team in the nation. The outcome of this SEC championship turned out exactly how I expected it to. Even my friend who is a huge Florida fan expected this to happen. Tebow has not had a great year despite all the media hype, and he would do no better in a rematch. He looked uncomfortable in the pocket all night and he missed a few wide open receivers. Florida did not show anything tonight that suggests they're even remotely worthy of a rematch. Bring on TCU or Cincy if Texas happens to lose tonight.

One of the reasons I can't wait for him to graduate is for these awful jokes to stop.

The game wasn't close enough for anyone to justify voting Florida #2. And I would be willing to bet that more than one "writer" down here throws Carlos Dunlap under the bus for getting suspended for this game.

Alabama controlled things pretty much the entire game, so Florida's case for a rematch, even if Texas loses, isn't real strong. I'd love to see Nebraska pull off the upset just for the BCS chaos and teethgnashing that would ensue.

I'm also hoping Texas loses a close game just to see all the chaos it will create.

But if I recall correctly a few years ago #2 Michigan lost a close game to #1 Ohio State. I kept hearing arguments against a rematch like "you have to win your conference to play in the NC". Of course Florida pounded Ohio State anyway so it didn't really matter. But is it possible that the 2 best teams in the country could be from the same conference? Not this year at least. No way should Florida get a rematch. But I suppose they'll still get to go BCS bowling...

From an "old school" perspective, it sucked. However, the "old school" hasn't been in session for about twenty years now, and it is pretty much in line with what other teams do to each other after big wins. If I were an underclassman, though, I would be pissed, because things like that end up in the locker room the next time the teams face each other and help a lot with motivation.

Anyone remember UGA's mass endzone celebration a couple of years ago? That didn't work out to well for them next time. Ultimately, any ill feelings will play themselves out where they belong: on the field.

IIRC, in response to the Michigan-Florida-Ohio St. thing in '06, it actually was made an official rule that you have to win your conference to play for the BCS title.

If this is true, there's no way Fl plays. Even if this isn't true it's highly unlikely w/ multiple undefeated teams out there when Florida just got spanked by Bama.

(And btw, OSU and UM in '06 was a totally different situation. I think the case was there for a rematch b/c it was a 3 pt. loss on the road.... a very very close game. In this game, however, Alabama absolutely killed them on a neutral field.)

I guess I never heard about this rule becoming official. It makes sense but it seems to rule out the possibility that the two best teams in the country could come from the same conference. I dream of the day that two big 10 teams (one being Michigan of course) go undefeated and due to the crazy conference schedule don't play each other during the regular season. When the dust settles these two teams are ranked 1 and 2 and we have an all big 10 NC. Imagine the controversy! I know it's highly unlikely but is it even possible? Could 2 co-champions play in the NC?

And I think you made the point I was trying to make better than I did. If Michigan couldn't get a rematch for losing such a close road game there is no way Florida should even get a sniff of a rematch for getting smashed by Bama.

of a playoff, but after this season i think thats the only one college football can retain a level of legitimacy.

if texas losses, there are three undefeated teams fighting for one bcs spot. how can someone tell the two other teams they dont belong in the game because a computer says so?

maizenbluedevil

Actually there would be 4 undefeateds fighting for 2 spots.

However, Bama is a shoe in.

Boise is the weakest link.

Cinci and TCU would both have strong cases and at that point it comes down to whether TCU's dominance or Cinci's stronger schedule is more compelling.... so really it's only 2 teams vying for 1 spot. However that's enough to seriously undermine the legitimacy of the current system b/c one team will be chosen over another based on the purely subjective value judgments of voters.

It's the human polls. Each human poll contributes 1/3 of the final BCS standing. At most, a computer rating contributes 1/4 of the last 1/3, or 1/12. Each computer rating has a very, very slim chance at excluding, or including any team from the top two.

I'd worry more about human voters conspiring or, at the very least, colluding to exclude tcu or cincinnati. If Texas wins, I don't see any way they don't play for the 'championship.' If they lose, my vote is for Cincinnati.

This will be the first and only time I will pull for Nebraska. Ever. And I'm a Texas 'alum.'

1/4 following the formula choosing Oklahoma over #1 human poll ranked USC in the 2003 season.

Also, recall that year there were no undefeated teams and three one-loss teams. (In fact, we had all Nov that year to root for both one-loss USC & LSU to lose another to propel two-loss Mich to the NC game...Didn't happen.)

This year's National Championship game will be played by two undefeated teams, Alabama and one of Texas (if they win tonight), TCU or Cincinnati, or Boise State (OK, it won't be Boise State).

I would absolutely love to see Nebraska beat Texas. I would think that would move TCU to the number 2 spot(aren't they number 4 in the current bcs rankings?)If TCU could beat 'Bama then maybe just maybe the Ncaa will adopt a playoff.

After the incredible comeback today and the domination Bama had over UF it is my opinion that is no way that Florida can get in. I think that Cincinnati might be the second best team even if Texas wins. Not that they have a shot in hell to jump them if that were to be the case.

Seth9

They were absolutely dominated by Alabama. There are multiple other undefeated teams. And finally, their performance throughout the regular season wasn't exactly overwhelming (remembering Arkansas here).

Florida took a whooping, and while I do not normally cheer for SEC teams, I am glad Bama won. Living in Florida, this is all I hear about on a weekly basis. I have developed a sort of Buckeye-level hatred for the Gators as a result. I do not see how they could get a rematch after what happened. On that note, if this Texas team shows up in the title game (assuming they beat Nebraska) it will be ugly.

if texas loses...itll be tcu or cincy.

its strange that tcu has a higher ranked strength of schedule, being in a non-bcs conference.

especially since they only played two ranked teams, 16 byu, and 16 utah. they also beat an unranked clemson.

i mean, seriously, are they going to get into the nat'l championship game over an undefeated bcs-league champ bc they beat those three teams!?

god, if you're out there, please let texas win so i have a game that's worth watching.

The problem with that is that TCU in the NC would've actually been good for the BCS. The biggest argument against the BCS is that it shuts schools from non-BCS conferences out of the championship game. If TCU got the bid, the BCS would use that as evidence that the BCS doesn't shut out small schools and it would actually help their argument.

I tried to come up with a response to this, but I can't.

I like a good conspiracy - I suspect that somehow a BCS team would have ended up in spot #2. In many peoples' minds, TCU, Boise and even Cincinnati don't sport the strength of schedule to warrant inclusion in the championship game.

EDIT:
The Sagarin ratings have Florida at #2, still over Texas.
The Anderson and Hester ranking hasn't been updated, yet, but Florida has a reasonable lead over Texas.
Same with the Billingsly Report.
The Colley Matrix will likely see Texas jump Florida.
Florida has a reasonable lead over Cincinnati in the Peter Wolfe rating.
In the Massey rating, Texas isn't even close.

And I think we all know what the human polls will look like.

Whatever they say over at the BCS, their formulae fail to determine a national champion that satisfies most of the people. They can spew forth whatever rubbish they wish, but in the end they can't deny that.

...but it would have been delicious to to see Meyer try and justify why a team that "had their chance" should get a "rematch no one wants to see".

But I'm just evil like that.
