Remove the point system
Given 1) the uproar over Brain's attempts to add some utility to the system and 2) having a post dedicated to "pos-banging", I think it's become pretty clear that the point system is nothing more than a status-quo outlet for the attention-deprived, looking for some misplaced affirmation of their existence. It's become a detriment to the quality of the board since people are too busy jonesing for points instead of providing useful commentary.

but anyone who uses the word "retarded" as an insult on a public forum of educated people has absolutely no credibility, especially when it comes to judging those people or the points system.
If you want anyone to really listen to your arguments, you may want to forget the name-calling and stick to logic and facts. Reading any of Brian's posts may even teach you how to do this.
Or not.

I don't know what Tater wrote that was anti-Semitic but I do know what you wrote in the moderator action thread (since deleted):
"Doesn't free speech include the right for me to be a dick?" or something very similar.
I say just be yourself, no one will think you're acting like a dick.
I am writing this to get negbanged, isn't that just so hilarious?

it's an example of the pot calling the kettle blacker. obviously racist and homophobic comments are deleted on sight (and if they're not mention where they can be found in the moderation thread so they can be) but being a dick because LOL I PISSED SOMEONE ON THE INTERNETS OFF is not exactly fun either. there's been a lot of self-amusing to the detriment of the board lately.
August 19th, 2010 at 12:34 PM ^
No one has tried to claim "pot calling the kettle black" is racist here. Yet.
And all self amusing should be done behind closed (internet) doors.

Go back and read some of Tater's old posts at Midnight Maize or his blog and you'll realize why DB is calling him out (and why we kicked Tater off MM). Plus, look at DB's sig. We didn't vote him as biggest douche for no reason, although it was just for fun.

Being voted the biggest douche was the proudest moment in my 30 years of existence.

I agree with this somewhat. I actually think this blog is becoming somewhat cluttered with newbies/threads/diarists that don't add a great deal to the site, but post anyway. The mods do a good job of moving stupid diaries to the MGoBoard, but I think more threads should be deleted.
As this site gets bigger and bigger, more people will filter in and clutter it up. That's good for Brian in some respects, but I think it also pushes away people like you. I actually find myself posting less because after the 8th thread about the same thing, I just get fed up and stop reading the board for awhile.
I used to read just about every thread on here. Now I probably read 10% of them.

is people who write "I think" posts that have little to no research or foundation and are generally a rant they would deliver in a bar at 1 in the morning. these are comments, not thread/diary topics.
August 19th, 2010 at 10:58 AM ^
Yeah...instead of finding a thread about whether Gardner will redshirt and bumping it to the top by commenting on it, people just start another thread about the same topic. It becomes tiresome for readers. Those are the threads I wish would be deleted.

considering you've been on the wrong end of arguments where you yelled one thing and people voted down in silent response.
also Brian would likely argue the point system has been invaluable for finding trolls in threads and determining which posters merely accumulate negatives, thereby demonstrating a "negative" presence.
9 times out of 10 (i being the 1), people with high points contribute significant research, etc.
i'm just here to meet girls.

Negged for only having 200-something points.

except you, OP. You only get dong punches.

Come on, we have endured enough dong punches in the past 48 hours.

I grew up in the MgoBlog errors of "the first rule of MGoPoints is that we don't talk about MGoPoints." Once that rule was broken, all hell broke loose.
First, Brian started talking about them on the main page with the attempted new system (hello New Coca Cola). Then people started commenting on them. Now, we have whole comment threads devoted to nothing more than talking about MGoPoints.
You know who I blame for all of this? RR. He came in now the tradition of not talking about MGoPoints has been destroyed.

Getting points is fun!
August 19th, 2010 at 12:34 PM ^
I am deeply grieved by the crisis this MGoPoint system has caused.
Will our beloved board be saved?
I offer to take this burden on myself - if you will petition Brian to appoint me emergency executive MGoPoint powers!
I will monitor content and - only at the greatest need - negate or add unlimited points to any account with grave and thoughtful consideration.
I will use this power only for good and only with deep reservations.
When this body has democratically resolved the MGoPoint issue, I will lay down these powers, as no man should be so encumbered - except when the greater and moral good requires this yoke to be taken up by a strong hand.

i came here for help with my depressed condition relative to my insane UM football obsession. I never commented, just read. Mostly front page stuff. Therapy really. The freaking games used to be my therapy. Now its why I need this. So, my head was about to explode and I started to comment a few weeks ago. Felt better. Got a few points. Last night I got swept up in a posbang and my God....I feel cured. But wanting more now. What the hell has happened.
August 19th, 2010 at 10:40 PM ^
And besides, like others have said, last night's thread was kind of fun and amusing. There's nothing wrong with that once in a while when tensions get high late in the offseason.

If you want to talk about brain's, you might want to go to med school. If you're talking about Brian, i wouldn't want to have his responsiblities. The poor man is trying his best to be amenable to all concerns. I think he is doing a fantastic job, i do not think anyone could reasonably ask for more.
