Mason NEEDS this, Pistons, after all you've put him through
Also, a post saying "Get rid of MGoPoints" is just as useless and creates just as much clutter as the official Pos-bang thread.
I would say it's more useless. I actually felt happy while on this site for the first time in a while last night.
But... wait... I mean if you take away the point system on MGoBlog then I might as well just die! CG, I beg you, PLEASE don't make Brian get rid of the only good thing in my life.
I can't claim to have been around before the points system, but was the quality of the board that much better? I have to believe that there were still useless and inane comments then too. I know the points system has often made me reconsider if something I might post is really worthy to be posted.
I also find it useful to judge the validity of information provided. I realize there are problems with that, but generally, it shows me who has been proven to be wise and knowledgeable about U-M athletics.
The board was MUCH better when Haloscan was around. You should be sorry that you missed out.
No pretty pictures, not threading, you just had to be willing to read through and follow the arguments. Those were the days....
Ah, Haloscan! Those were the good old days when we didn't neg-bang on fools, but hurled plenty of insults at comments from someone cowardly named "anonymous".
Oh Haloscan, how we miss your simplicity! /sarcasm
Hey, I was named "anonymous"!
Cosign re: Haloscan. Ahh, the halcyon days of refreshing Haloscan during the coaching search, with flight tracker updates! There was no MGoBoard or Diaries at that time. It was just Brian's posts, and then massive conversations would break out in the comments. The thing is, though, there were about 1/10th as many people commenting at the time, so it was actually pretty sweet. Unfortunately, I think this place has gotten too big for Haloscan now. BRIAN SOLD OUT! (Kidding. The site is, overall, a much better place where I spend more time now, due almost exclusively to the addition of the diaries, Brian's small army of Tom and Tim, and the OT stuff. It's grown into a community, really, of people connected by a common religion- Michigan sports).
The larger Holoscan comment threads were impossible to read through. The current system is much better on the eyes (at least it was with the boxes) and has a higher content to spam ratio thanks to voting. Not even close.
I loved to live chat games on haloscan. There were only a few dozen regulars (if that). Every halftime Magnus would come and yell at everyone who was doom and glooming it.
Haloscan didn't immediately precede the points version of this board. We went about a year (from the revamped site's launch in June 2008) to whenever it was last summer when Brian introduced points. To answer the earlier question, points definitely didn't hurt the quality of the board. In fact, they've cut down on people arguing back with trolls. It's simpler to just neg them.
I have been on the board for about a year now. Here is the logic I have come to realize about the "point" system. You need to make comments and do things that people like or respect on the board. When you do that, you get "rewarded" with a point. When you get enough points, you get further "privileges" to make post, diaries and more comments. In other words, you have to earn you status and respect on the board from the other community members. It is a system (not a perfect one) to keep things focused mostly on Michigan sports, funny shit happening in the world around us, keeping trolls out and having fun. Which by the way, is what I think the post dedicated to "pos banging" was all about. It was intended to be "Fun".....
The Blog is a microcosm of the world we live in. Yes there are some dumbass posts on the board, jackasses, morons, repetative topic beatdowns, etc. But if you filter this stuff out (like you have to do in real life), there are some pretty interesting dudes, topics and information available on this site......
Lighten up, get laid and have some fun....
The posbang was in no way intended to be "fun". You guys totally hijacked that thread...
Also, I think I may steal that last line. Wise words my man. Wise words.
they missed the posbang?
I'd +1 you in solace, but that would only mock your intentions. Carry on
because I just +1ed you to mock OP's intentions.
But where will I go for my misplaced affirmation of my existence?
Strip clubs I guess, like everybody else.
Given 1) the uproar over [Michigan]'s attempts to add some [scoring] to the system and 2) having a [million] post['s] dedicated to "[how Michigan will score points]", I think it's become pretty clear that the point system [in college football] is nothing more than a status-quo outlet for the attention-deprived, looking for some misplaced affirmation of their existence. It's become a detriment to the quality of the [sport] since people are too busy jonesing for points instead of providing useful [football].
Just let the two teams play. You don't need to keep score; it will be readily apparent to everyone which team is better. Why assign arbitrary point totals to various activities. The current system has created a touchdown bias, and is just a way to keep the kickers down.
Under the "no-points" system, this comment would have spawned a political thread that would have been useless! Now its just funny and we move on. Points equal Good!
We should be allowing both teams to claim a "W" for the effort, and ban "L"s.
They are a part of me.
IMO, the points have done a tremendous job cutting down on useless and inflammatory posting. I attribute the point system with doing away with 98% of the posts and comments pertaining to national politics that would pop up before the system was installed. Posbang for MGoPoints!
The facsination with the fascination with MGoPoints is as facsinating as the fascination itself.
but you're out of your League with this one.
From my cold dead fingers
the first rule? Banged into oblivion, that's what.
...you don't mind if we take them away from you then?
I mean, we just got them back...you think this post is going to make Brian see the light and flip right back?
I just posbanged this entire thread, because I disagree with you.
What would that be like? Head over to MLive, where the users dutifully respond to all trolls, no matter how ridiculous, and a guy who feels compelled to give the SW Michigan weather report every day is considered a sage observer of UM football and everything else.
Not much is better than watching someone meltdown and lose 300 points
Plus it shouldn't cost me a point to neg-bang the_big_house_500th
/braces for negbang
The good Lord chose not to bless me with charm, athletic ability... or a fully functional brain. My MGoPoints are the only thing I have going for me.
I'm really bummed I was not here for the posbang. That was truly hilarious reading.
I could see using a number of other reasons for asking to eliminate points, but citing the posbang was a major misstep. In a weird way it actually sort of felt like reading the haloscan board again.
I guess it's either that or I was merely reminded of the coaching search during the Woolfolk freakout...
Regardless of people on here saying how much the accumulation of points helps with the content quality on here they are misguided or flat out full of shit. In case you haven't noticed Brian has created a system of points in genius fashion for all the little MGOBLOG crack addicts on here that cant keep there ass off the site all day and will keep hitting the site over and over and over and over again just to accumulate and be heard. Its why I barely ever comment anymore. This is the best site ever for info on all things Meeeeeeechigan. But its really just a big whiners clinic when it comes to the majority of comments anymore. So keeping or getting rid of the point system is pretty much a dead issue. Brian would never get rid of it. Bad business if he did. If I owned a site, i'd take that model in a minute. Points = imaginary status yet you don't have to do anything no matter how many points the person gets? Wow thats perfect.
but anyone who uses the word "retarded" as an insult on a public forum of educated people has absolutely no credibility, especially when it comes to judging those people or the points system.
If you want anyone to really listen to your arguments, you may want to forget the name-calling and stick to logic and facts. Reading any of Brian's posts may even teach you how to do this.
I don't know what Tater wrote that was anti-Semitic but I do know what you wrote in the moderator action thread (since deleted):
"Doesn't free speech include the right for me to be a dick?" or something very similar.
I say just be yourself, no one will think you're acting like a dick.
I am writing this to get negbanged, isn't that just so hilarious?
it's an example of the pot calling the kettle blacker. obviously racist and homophobic comments are deleted on sight (and if they're not mention where they can be found in the moderation thread so they can be) but being a dick because LOL I PISSED SOMEONE ON THE INTERNETS OFF is not exactly fun either. there's been a lot of self-amusing to the detriment of the board lately.
No one has tried to claim "pot calling the kettle black" is racist here. Yet.
And all self amusing should be done behind closed (internet) doors.
Go back and read some of Tater's old posts at Midnight Maize or his blog and you'll realize why DB is calling him out (and why we kicked Tater off MM). Plus, look at DB's sig. We didn't vote him as biggest douche for no reason, although it was just for fun.
