Remembering Bo

Submitted by M Gulo Gulo on

Today we remember our legendary football coach Bo Schembechler, who passed away on this day in 2006.

We know he is up there with Fielding Yost, Don Canham, Bob Ufer, Tom Harmon Fritz Crisler and many other great Michigan Men looking down on his protege Jim Harbaugh leading the Wolverines to victory!

Bo started coaching at Michigan during my junior year at Michigan, taking over from Bump Elliott. The transition was very similiar to Harbaugh taking over from Hoke ....simiiliar in the infusion of leadership and the turn around in winning results. In Bump's next to last year, the team went 4 wins, 6 losses with many unoccupied seats in the Big House in 1967. The first win was against Duke on a field goal that almost hit the cross bar. and by the end of the year it was "DUMP Bump " chanting. The '68 team improved to 8 - 2 . but the Big House often was half filled with Bump still as coach. Bo was hired in 1969 and with a new starting QB went 6 and 1 in the Big Ten ( 8 -2 overall )and pulled off one of the biggest upsets in colege history by beating the top ranked and overwhelming favorite Buckeyes ...and finally filling up the Big House.

Players loved Bo and the fans did too.

I'll never forget there was a drawing for an all inclusive trip for 2 to Michigan's bowl game back in the '90's and Bo was drawing the winner at halftime of the Ohio State game.

When Bo and Cat walked out onto the field the Crowd began chanting  "BO IS GOD" over and over. When Bo got to the mike he quieted the chants just by saying "Now Cut that out!" and the crowd did. The fans would do what ever he asked as well.
