Remember: Coach Schiano

Someone call George Costanza...but seriously do you remember when it seemed like Greg Schiano turned us down?????? Since then he has played on Thursday night and been stung left and right by no one and anyone.

He was scared of THE BIG SHOW.

I really don't think most

I really don't think most smart coaches "hold out" for anything in terms of future jobs.  They either comit themselves to the long haul or they go.  They know you have to go get the $$$ while your stock is high.  If you don't and suddenly wind up having a couple of bad seasons you are stuck with or worse fired from the job you already have.

He was holding out for the PSU job

That's been a very strong rumor on the East Coast.  Put it this way: If JoePa was the one who retired in 2007, Schiano would now be running out their tunnel with that gay raggedy lion*.

*Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I will bet good money that JoPa will still outlast Schiano as a college football coach.  We were fortunate not to get him.

Schiano noooo.

I hope JoePa doesn't outlast him.  That would probably mean Schiano had a date with the grim reaper in the next couple of years.

I think if Schiano would've stayed, we might have been able to keep Mallet, but I don't think we would have been conference champs the last few years.  That dude was seriously homesick, so he would've had to say, "Did you see what I did for Mike Teel?  I can do the same thing for you."

.

Sorry my sarcasm wasn't more

Sorry my sarcasm wasn't more overt.  It just seems like JoPa will outlast everyone currently coaching in college football.  Stiil, I am not impressed with Schiano and wasn't 3 years ago either.

Schiano has been out of grace with the faithful

Much like the Michigan alums didn't want RR, the PSU crowd wanted Golden.  Him taking the job at Miami has really messed it up.  Still, for them Schiano is yesterday's news.

I take solace in knowing that they too will be going through this same mess soon.  Who knows, maybe very soon, but I've been thinking that for at least a decade.

I'd always heard that he

I'd always heard that he didn't want to uproot his family.  Sort of eerily similar to JH, huh?  I'd  heard that his wife didn't want to move anywhere, thus the reports that it was between the 49ers and Stanford.

Then again, he probably would have scrounged at least one victory over a quality opponent. Can't see how we would be any worse off today.

LOL

Someone needs to act big on the blogs to make up for their small penis syndrome. It's okay Sparty, I'm sure MSU's med school is coming up with a cure for that!

[EDIT:] This was a response to a sparty troll

Please MOAR MANNINGHAMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sparty troll would have been sufficiently checked by simple reference to their loss to PSU (YTPSU).  No need to bring out the big guns.  These feebs are returned to Earth by simpler measures.

A multi-purpose response!

Amazing!  What works as a reply to a Sparty troll's deleted post, works just as well responding to a post from mackbru!  What does that tell you?

It is funny reading the

It is funny reading the comments about Schiano and RR from that link and how they are eerily similar to comments now about potential coaches.

The optimism when RR was hired was quite something.

It is also interesting to note that while Schiano was a hot prospect then- turned down Miami and Michigan- now nobody even mentions him during coaching search discussions.  It just goes to show you that you have to take opportunities while you are hot.  It also shows us that the coach du jour is not always the best one.

I think that if Schiano had come here we would have had 3 seasons of 7-6 plus/minus, and the current question would be is whether he has what it takes to get us over the hump and whether he should be on the hot seat.

He needed to feel closer to home.  Needed a Texas/Arkansas guy, some real authenticity.  So..... Who's that guy from Slingblade that plays the abusive boyfriend/stepdad?  Dwight Yokam/Steve Earl/Turkey Sandwich?

It's possible that

Schiano was a better fit for what we had at the time AND Rodriguez was the more promising candidate.  I mean, Rich Rod did have more accomplishments at the time...he was just hamstrung by a lot of bad luck/bad vibes (Freep, injuries, internal enemies) and made some critical errors (not being able to keep stars like Mallet/Boren/Warren, letting too many people transfer, wasting recruiting energy on washouts and academically ineligible recruits, GERG, etc.).

Would the same thing have happened to Schiano?  Some maybe, but others maybe not.

So it might be fair to say that Rodriguez had more potential with greater risk while Schiano was more of a sure thing but not as dazzling.  I imagine this was what Bill Martin thought when he offered the job to Schiano first.

FTR, neither Rodriguez nor Schiano has done well, career-wise, out of the way things played out.

During the search, though, at least we had this moment. Ah, those haloscan days...

Ferentz, Schiano, was there no one who could have followed LC as Michigan football coach and done a good job and transitioned better than RR did?

Monkeyface is not a good

Monkeyface is not a good coach.  He was able to give Rutgers 15 minutes of mediocrity built on embarrassing non-conference schedules and one big win in the last decade.

And now, Rutgers is right back to its rightful place dwelling in the cellar of the Big East.  I hope he never leaves.
