ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan Board of Regents today (Thursday, May 19) approved the schematic design for the second phase of renovations and expansion to Crisler Arena.

The expansion will add approximately 63,000 gross square feet for new fan entrances, additional retail spaces and ticketing areas, as well as a private club space.

The renovation will improve seating for people with disabilities and provide expanded and renovated concourses to allow for an increase in restrooms, concessions and other fan amenities. All seats throughout the arena will be replaced.

Athletic resources and gifts will fund the $52 million project. The construction schedule for the second phase will be presented to the regents when approval is sought for the schematic design.

TMP Architecture, assisted by Sink Combs Dethlefs, will begin the design work immediately. Those firms designed the new $23.2 million Basketball Player Development Center, which is scheduled to be completed later this year.

In October 2010, the Board of Regents approved the first phase of the Crisler renovation at a cost of $20 million. This initial phase addresses the highest priority infrastructure needs such as repair of the roof, electrical, plumbing and air handling systems.

During the last decade, improvements to Crisler Arena have included renovations to the men's and women's locker rooms, new lighting and sound systems, installation of courtside seating and updates to the strength and conditioning areas.

Construction of Crisler Arena initially was completed in 1968.

When Michigan basketball fans enter Crisler Arena following a $52-million makeover, they’ll be greeted by a large, glowing block “M” situated in a waterfall. Those fans also will see more restrooms, more concessions, a club for premium seat holders and a ton of windows that will allow the arena to “glow” when in use at night.

I know I am caved, but I can answer that. Yost is next line to get renovations. The plan is a full renovation of everything south of the north bleachers. Capacity will actually be reduced (around ~500 seata) for the Yost renovations in order for Yost to be ADA compliant.

I don't think you'll have to worry. It would be a monumentally stupid decision to move the hockey team for a single home game. I doubt that Crisler will have the necessary infrastructure to support a hockey rink too.

We really needed the makeover. Just a few years ago, our facilities were pretty unanimously considered the worst in the Large 11, and our recruiting seemed to reflect that. Giving the players a shiny new home that they can be proud of can only boost a program back on the way up . . .

My organization had to do the last Crisler Clean Up before they locked up the place. Granted, we didn't have to do much cleaning since only the lower bowl was open and it was a gymnastics event. However, we had to help dismantle a ton of the gymnastics equipment, which was a lot of manual labor. Plus this was on a Saturday night, so I missed my friend's 21st pre-game. Double whammy.

Dave Brandon definitely creates the future. Crisler will soon have all the amenities of a new building, without being some newly-built  multi-use corporate named piece of trash(like OSU's arena).

I never thought the renovations to Crisler were going to be this extensive, but I definitely approve.

when reading this from annarbor.com:

"As part of the current plan, we have points of sale for merchandise, a significant increase in the number of points of sale for food and the concept of kind of a club area where certain patrons can go for a little bit different experience," Brandon said. "Much like we did for football and (people) can have seats and an area to retire to that will have certain amenities that will make it special. "

Not really suites, more of a club type concept."
